Hot Air Plastic Welding: Nitrogen vs. Air

This video demonstrates why nitrogen hot air plastic welding is superior to regular hot air plastic welding. As you can see, hot air plastic welding generates much more smoke than nitrogen welding. You can see the plastic glowing and burning when using the hot air welder. This is because nitrogen acts like a shielding gas to prevent the burning and oxidation that occurs when using just air.

As @NickVeitech stated in his comment, this video is somewhat misleading. Standard air welds produce smoke and burning *when the temperature is too high*. Nitrogen prevents this type of burning when the temperature is too high, but so does lowering the temperature for the standard air weld. The takeaway from this video should not be "you must have nitrogen to air weld." Nitrogen is better, but it is not absolutely essential.

I didn't see where it says its a "must". Although its not a "must" it is a must to produce the best possible weld. Other inert gasses can also be used. But hot air welding will produce smoke no matter how low you get the temperature because the air has to be so much hotter than the melting point of the material. Using nitrogen eliminates the smoke and makes for a much healthier work environment.

No preheating of the base and welding strip, only putting heat at the joint. Poor welding technique, of course the Air side was going to burn.

To much heat being used on the air welder it is virtually burning the bumper, it could have been welded with air without excessive smoke and burning. Got to understand though, polyvance are a business and they want to market their nitrogen setup. This is a great channel and I love their videos. So I am not disrespecting their work. But one has to remember people have been air welding with excellent results. For many years, polyvance included I would imagine as they have been at since the early 80’s

@@nickVeitch00 the point is, even if you use excessive heat, there is no combustion ie no oxidizer. That being said, I would like to know if nitrogen works better than CO2 as a welding gas?
