Time to do something about getting all hot and bothered. What is causing the overheating, and can we fix it?

Methodical approach wins the day! When you did the compression test, did you have all the spark plugs out at the same time & the throttle fully open? With a closed throttle, the readings will be lower. If you don't have one, I use a Gunsons Trakrite, which I have had for a few years now & used on different cars, makes it easy to check & adjust the tracking. New ones can be had for under £70.00 - more accurate than using string to measure and less expensive than using a garage!

the way I was taught was one plug at a time, disconnect the king lead, and crank a few times. Repeat to be sure you're getting a good reading. As long as everyone is within about 10psi you're okay. I've also had use of one of those Trakrites and it's just easier to get a garage to do it, I rarely need to do it more than once a year per car so it's not too bad.

Renault five heater cables will only ever work correctly if the outer cable is secured rigidly at both ends where it clips onto the body of the heater there is a black metal spring clip that fits into a groove and goes over the outer cable to hold it in place otherwise the action of the inner cable is compromised by the fact that it is not acting in its correct area so whilst you will get movement and the controls will move on the dashboard the operation of the flat and the heater control valve for the water will not be anywhere where it should be in relation to the operation of the cable

I would suggest that you get yourself some washing soda dissolve it and run that through the cooling system you'll be surprised at the amount of muck you get out of it do you still have my phone number if you need if you need to chat give me a call Ruben

So... is mine broken then? I don't know what it's supposed to look like at the dashboard end so if there's something missing I don't know it is.

Almost looks like the water pump is bad.

Which would be very annoying since it's brand new. It could also be an air lock, which means the thermostat doesn't get to the right temperature and stays closed, which is really common on these engines. Just have to keep driving it until it stops doing it or breaks something.
