I am a brand new chicken mom. I am having trouble with temperature regulation. I had the heating plate first, then added a red light but now I'm told I may have it too hot. ( I am in the bay area also), I am trying to keep my week old chicks happy. I have lost 3 now in the first week, 2 polish and today my Buff Orpington was squished. Last night the others piled on her to sleep and hurt her. This is a lot harder than I thought it would be. I did all my homework and ordered a few extra and knew I would lose some, but it's really hard trying to get it right.

Hi Kathy, Hang in there. Polish are among the hardest to brood - so it's not your fault! Keep in mind they need to be at 95* for the first week and reduce the temp by 5* each week thereafter. If you have a group of 10 or more chicks, by week 4 they should be really fine to start venturing out away from synthetic heat sources. They will brood together as a pack to get heat or lay in the sun to warm up. At night, if the temp dips below 60* you will likely want to turn back on the brooder plate or a low wattage light.

I thank you so much for your information. I just purchased 8 1 week old chicks and I am trying to keep them alive. I don't know how to tell the temperature of the lamp. I try to put it on them but not to close. I have had them for 3 days, so far so good.

How many weeks do you leave the chicks in the brooder? At 6 weeks old How many chicks can fit in a 2ft x 4ft brooder?

I'll bet those chicks in the heat-lamp box were too hot. Have you checked the temperature in the corner where they were all huddled away from the heat lamp?

We have one of the lowest rates of fatalities for how many chicks we raise each year. But thank you for your opinion!

How long/until what size can the chicks be kept in those brooder boxes? I should have watched this video first. Your boxes seem simple to build but tidy. I built a box for 6 black copper marans chicks we got at 3 days old. The box is too big so it's hard to keep warm (I'm in Fresno). Now I have the chicks inside the house, in a plastic bin but they seem to grow fast for only 1 week now. The box I built is still too big for them though but I built it to keep them as long as possible until they're big enough to be moved into the hen house with my other mature birds.

Hello Arthur - our brooders for the small chicks as seen in the video are 26" wide and 3ft long. They are also about 2.5 ft tall. Hope this helps!

How and with what do you hang the heat lamps?
@MelatTheUrbanChicken4 жыл бұрын
Hi And, we created wooden notches with a screw partially screwed in (as seen in part of the video) and the clamp for the light housing is securely placed on the notch and then secured by the screw. Hope this helps!

@MelatTheUrbanChicken3 жыл бұрын
Red is best if you can get one. But yes, the heat needs to be constant. 95* for the first week, then reduce by 5* each week until they're feathered.

I thought I saw a kitty cat. 🐱 Will cats kill chicks? I am thinking about cartoons as I know nothing about raising chickens.
@MelatTheUrbanChicken4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Our cats will not go near a pullet or full grown hen (less they be pecked!) They will eat a baby chick less than a week old - which is why we keep our chicks in a secured brooder.
