Hot Fuzz was probably Olivia Colman's biggest movie role at that time. She did a lot of comedy roles on British TV, some bigger, some smaller but didn't really get her international break before having shown her drama chops in Broadchurch.

There were so many known actors in that movie, it was just impossible to give them extensive lines in it, I guess. And a few of them, now pretty big, were quite young still.

film production, in the off hours hanging with crew members, and the rare spots when you're waiting on other people, is the MOST fun. and the work itself at the end of the day feels incredibly rewarding, you do feel ownership of the actual movie when it's good. it's usually a great experience to be on a job with a crew. conversely, actors (credible ones, most actors who continue to work) spend a ton of time doing super dull prep work where they can't be sure how it'll come out at all until it comes out. a good actor spends as much or more time doing homework than most crew members.

(When you mentioned child actors) They DO get overworked. California has a law where actors from birth to (I don't know exactly, but maybe age ten), they have to be given a break every 30 minutes or something. Also, I discovered that if you become a dancer on shows like American Idol, they literally have you work 20 hours per day, EVERY day of the week. And you cannot call off for any reason. Even if you're puking your guts out, you still have to go to work. You could faint, or anything, you still have to get back up and keep dancing. It's in their contract. So, yes, they get overworked. There's no way I would take a job like that. Or else, I would quit the first day.
@jamesdignanmusic27659 ай бұрын
Acting is tough. And sometimes they get really screwed up by their roles. It wasn't just dehydration that was a problem for Shelley Duvall in The Shining - it left her with psychological scars, too. (A pity - you've definitely got a good face and personality for movies, Mandy!) BTW, one big star you might not even realise was in Hot Fuzz in Cate Blanchett, who had a tiny role and wore a mask the whole time (she played Nicholas's ex, seen briefly working at a crime scene early in the movie) - she just wanted to be in it!

Off the top of my head: Will Wheaton, Sean Astin, Elijah Wood... Granted, Wheaton did have serious familial issues growing up because of his acting career, but he's still grown up a nice, seemingly well-adjusted man. Some handle it better than others. But in general, it's not a good idea to not let kids be kids. Just look at someone like Michael Jackson, who was a global megastar even as a little kid, and ended up living with a chimp, addicted to plastic surgery and heavy duty prescription drugs, and, well, let's just say desperate to hang out with kids into adulthood...

Edgar Wright has had a lot of trouble writing women who aren’t there for any reason either relevant to the plot or there entirely as the prize for the male lead to be driven by right through to Baby Driver. I haven’t seen Late Night in Soho yet but I hope he bucks his trend with that one given it has a woman in the lead.

You seemed bemused at they saying - "collars match the cuffs" ?? In mens fashion - a Winchester shirt is one with, for example, a striped pattern but with a solid white contrasting collar (at the neck) and solid white cuffs (at the wrists). In that vein here in the UK, a suble yet rude way to say that someone's hair up top and hair 'down below' is the same colour would be "collars and cuffs match". So no hair dye involved - all natural. It's sexist I know, but pretty exclusively said by a man about a woman in my experience. Which makes it funnier when he says it about the male actor simulating peeing on his shoe. I recall the script writers in an early James Bond movie with Sean Connery sneaking that saying into Bond's dialogue. I don't know if this 2nd saying is North American or just from our Canadian cousins - bless them. I once worked with an ex-Canadian Air Force guy who had a different saying for the same thing. He asked if the cute blonde who worked in HR was an aeroplane blonde. I was like "Que?". He explained that an aeroplane blonde looks blonde but has a black box.
