This is actually the middle movie in a set called the Cornetto Trilogy. Shaun of the Dead comes before and The World's End comes after. They are not a real serie, like Lord of the Rings, but rather linked by having the same cast etc. All 3 are worth the watch :)

Agreed, the Cornetto trilogy is what launched Edgar Wright's career as a filmmaker. You should totally watch Shaun of the Dead, then World's End. And after that, you can enjoy Scott Pilgrim vs the world, which is one of the most visually fun movies of all times (I kinda wish more comic book movies would be as unashamed of their comic book influences)

In the '90s there was a modern adaptation of Romeo and Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes ("William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet"). The joke in the movie was that they put on a production of THAT rather than of the original play. The song they sing after Juliet kills herself was from the soundtrack for the movie ("Lovefool" by The Cardigans).

Examples: "Want to be a big cop in a small town? F*** off up the model village" "You can't just make people disappear!" - "Yes I can, I'm the chief inspector" "Everyone and their mums are packing round here" - "Like who?" - "Farmers." - "Who else?" - "Farmer's mums"

This film references classic 1970s horror "The Wicker Man" - where a lone cop visits a remote Scottish village and ends up experiencing sheer terror "Oh God, no!" - that the whole town is in on. That cop is played by Edward Woodward who is the leader of the Neighbourhood Watch in this movie (whose last words are again "Oh God, no!") - so it's DEFINITELY deliberate. Three members of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit appear in this movie - all at the start. Peter Jackson plays "Father Xmas" who stabs Sgt Angel Cate Blanchett plays "Janine" - the forensic crime scene officer and ex Martin Freeman is the superior officer that orders Nicholas to Sandford Then. we have a who's who of English actors. Bill Nighy as the Chief of Police Timothy Dalton (a former James Bond) as Skinner Jim Broadbent of course Olivia Coleman as the saucy female cop, long before she won her Oscar for her serious roles Finally, you mentioned "Game of Thrones": "Yarp!" is played by "The Hound"!

Cameos by Cate Blanchett and Peter Jackson are a cool factoid to be sure, but the best part of the casting is the fact that Edgar Wright brought in a whole cavalcade of classically-trained British thespians specifically to make them have a giant shooty-splodey action scene throughout the last act of the movie. I mean, they even have a James Bond in there.

The stabbing santa was played by director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit), Angel's ex is played by Cate Blanchett (Hela in Thor: Ragnarok) and I believe the guy she was seeing was this movie's director, Edgar Wright. Them singing "Love Me" by The Cardigans is one of the soundtracks to the Leonardo DiCaprio-version of Romeo and Juliet. Me and a friend always quotted the "you got a moustache, I know" line all the time because he had a goateé and one time after he drank it did get stuck on his moustache line. He sadly passed away in 2019, I do miss him.

One really cool thing about this movie is that when you look at the action scenes they are always going for a non-lethal shot, in the end most of the neighborhood watch brings their injuries upon themselves. It's actually like they are showing the correct way of policing, by the regulations, impartial and focused on the community, but with such fun action sequences and comedy you don't even notice it. I would also say that Edgar Wright has such great cuts in his filming, the way that he transitions from one scene to the next is so creative and really makes his films flow seamlessly.

The use of language and miss direction is so well done, I love how Angel "discovers" a completely logical and legitimate reason for the killings, only to be confronted with a totally different, hilarious "truth" of everything being done for the greater good I think this is his best movie in the Cornetto trilogy, though I still really enjoy his first in the series Shaun of the Dead. If you do enjoy his style, Edgar made a really great action/heist movie called Baby Driver, much less humour in it - but still really great. We understood that a deftly wielded pen _prevented_ the need for a deftly wielded firearm.

I've described this elsewhere as a perfect storm of unexpected comedic performances. Martin Freeman as Nicholas' initial boss, Bill Nighy as the Chief Inspector, Timothy Dalton as Mr. Skinner - these list only a few people who demonstrate excellent humor from people not generally known for comedy.

Heeey, glad you discovered that one ! It's one of the funniest movies I've seen and is part of the Cornetto trilogy which launched Simon Pegg's acting career and Edgar Wright's career as a filmmaker. You should totally watch Shaun of the Dead, then World's End. And after that, you can enjoy Scott Pilgrim vs the World, which is one of the most visually fun movies of all times (I kinda wish more comic book movies would be as unashamed of their comic book influences)

The British people are infamous for being provincial. The idea that these people are so provincial that they not only mispronounce London, but seem to have never even heard of, it is the most hilarious thing in the world to me.

The horse and the shotguns looking like guitars are references to the movie Desperado with Antonio Banderas. It's an older movie so a lot of people don't know it

the guy that says "Yarp" is The Hound, in game of thrones. Rory McCann, the actor, is hardly recognizable that many people miss its him.

Now you MUST watch the other two movies of the "Cornetto Trilogy" . . . . . it started with Shaun of the Dead, then Hot Fuzz, then The World's End. It's ok you watched this first but definitely watch Shaun of the Dead next, then World's End. Some of the jokes and references land better that way.
