This is Stephen Chow's best film to this date, beat the "Shaolin Soccer" became his finest work that finally introduced him into Hollywood. Even this movie took place in Shanghai, but most details were all based on real life experiences from Chow's childhood in Hong Kong. For example, that "Pigsty Alley" was based on "Kowloon Walled City", where Chow has lived, and torn down in 1993. And most the actors in this movie were all have Kung Fu background, which is why the actions looks so realistic.

Stephen Chow really did a wonderful job with this movie. He mixed multiple genres (Comedy, Musical, Kung-Fu, Gangster and Love stories together), amazing visual and audio cues to BOTH "Hong Kong Cinema" (of the 50's-80s) and "Hollywood" (30's-50'), absolutely stunning combinations of slapstick comedy mixed with serious enlightened themes, and diverted expectations by casting some of the most respected "Kung-Fu artists" from their time-period into roles that were completely against their historical background of characters and yet (despite the obvious slapstick element) their "core characteristics" remained the same. Even more amazing, is that he did all of this while making a movie that actually stands on its own two feet and has been praised for several years as a true "Cinematic Gem" for being able to "lean so heavily" on various influences and yet stay true to itself and present a compelling movie of his own.

@@lphan4597 Too bad and what a shame, I always assumed he had been offered numerous Hollywood projects, and had turned them down preferring to do his own projects, that he could never get approved by them, or that he turned them down because he wouldn't have as much autonomy and really didn't want to have to deal with all the typical studio interference and BS!!!

@@po5283 Chow, as a person, was notoriously pretty shady. One issue he always had was sharing money and credit to the rest of his acting crew like his partner in the film (the fat guy) and his older sidekick (the one who played the coach in Shaolin Soccer). They're in a lot of his projects but still got paid relatively meager salaries while Chow took the majority share for every project he takes on. This is in contrast to Jackie Chan who always took care of his stunt crew.

Heeey ! Glad you're discovering this one ! It's one of HK's last sacred treasures (the golden age of HK cinema was from the early 80's to the 90's with some glorious remnants mid-2000's, and Stephen Chow definitely was one of its most vibrant defenders). If you've seen Shang Chi, at the beginning of the movie, when we are in Shang's room, there is actually a poster of Kung Fu Hustle on one of his wall ! Just to mention how influential this movie is. Oh ! And another fun fact l : the old landlord who does badass Taichi is played by legendary actor Yuen Wah... who is also playing the old archer in Shang Chi ! KungFu Hustle is truly one of the cinematic gold movie of HK's cinema history. If you're interested by Stephen Chow, he did countless movies in the 90's up to today, and they're all super goofy (he basically invented a new genre of comedy, the Mau Lei Tau, which means nonsense comedy), sometimes cruel (he's not afraid of showing some pretty graphic violence from time to time), but always with heart and big romance. He's been one of the sacred monsters of HK and chinese cinema ever since the 90's so I would totally recommend you to watch some of his earlier movies like Fight back to school, The flirting Scholar, King of Comedy, God of Cookery, From Beijing with Love, his duology Journey to the West 1 and 2, Shaolin Soccer, and some of his latest ones, like another Journey to the West : Conquering the demons, and The Mermaid, all of them box office monsters in China. Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin soccer are the perfect entry point of his filmography, being the 2 that are the most accessible to the western audience, but there is definitely a treasure trove of other films he made that are really worthy to discover. PS : Little fun facts : - Shaolin Soccer came out in 2001 and took the world by absolute storm ! Many people discovered Stephen Chow through Shaolin Soccer and it became an instant worldwide smash hit, with lots of fans wanting a sequel. Then a few years later, in 2004, the teaser of Kung Fu Hustle drops, and what's shown is the moment of his first appearance in the movie, when we see only his feet, and he expertly juggles with the ball, as an obvious nod to his previous smash hit Shaolin Soccer... and he crushes the ball, while screaming "no more playing ball !", followed by the title Kung Fu Hustle, then the shot of the kids crying as the final post title shot, trolling all the fans all over the world who have been clamoring for a Shaolin Soccer 2 ! And we all loved it ! - the tailor doing Hung Gar with all the rings on his arms was definitely the main inspiration for Shang Chi's rings, which, in the comics, were just classic fingers rings. - The landlady cracking her knuckles to the boss without any word was a parody of a similar shot with Bruce Lee in the HK cult classic The Way of the Dragon, where he did the exact same thing to a mafia boss who's been sending goons after him for the whole movie, and when finally confronted directly with the mob's boss, he cracked his knucles the exact same way, without a word, basically to tell him to get the hell our of his tail. If you haven't watched it yet, I really recommend that movie, it's a cult classic not only of HK cinema, but of all of Cinema's history. Stephen Chow being a big fan of Bruce Lee (he showed it as well in Shaolin Soccer), and this movie having a mafia boss, he just HAD to use this move ! - Stephen Chow is also famous to add some pretty obvious nods to his favourite Hollywood movies (the Spiderman Responsibility quote, or the blood tsunami in the corridor, directly inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, showing all the murderous chi of the Beast). Apart from Stephen Chow (who's definitely one of HK's most important filmmakers/actors/producers), try to watch some Jackie Chan (another HK cinema sacred monster), Sammo Hung ( a childhood friend of Jackie Chan, with also an incredible filmography), and Tsui Hark, another legendary director/producer, who was the producer/co-director of the Chinese Ghost Story saga, and the Once Upon a Time in China saga with Jet Li, 2 other cult classics sagas from the HK cinema.

The reason the landlady refused to fight and admonished those that did was because it attracted the Axe Gang. The more they saved, the more that died. After losing her son to a similar situation, they preferred to live anonymously and overlooked. The only other option would be to defeat the Axe Gang entirely. Though once there was no avoiding being attacked, she and her husband did finally threaten back.

Magy, IF you really did enjoy the "Kung-Fu fighting element" of this movie, I HIGHLY suggest looking into some Jet Li movies (Especially "Fist of Legend" or "Hero") or even "Ip Man" with Donnie Yen. Li and Yen have been considered some of "the best" at Martial Arts movies for DECADES. Jackie Chan is also another "legend" in the genre, and probably "Drunken Master" would be a good choice as it has a lot of comedy involved as well. The issue with Jackie Chan is that MOST of his movies were "series" despite have a few "comedic moments". But "Drunken Master" is one that is mostly a comedy with a few "series issues" involved.

In the movie, the two assassins hired by the Axe Gang play an instrument called the "guzheng." This traditional Chinese instrument produces sound waves that can be used to harm or even kill people. However, director Stephen Chow visualized these sound waves using specific imagery of knives and swords. For instance, quick musical notes represent sharp blades, while muffled notes resemble blunt weapons or fists. Through this visualization, the director emphasizes the varying skill levels among three characters: the coolie, the tailor, and the noodle chef. The coolie has the lowest skill level, evident when the assassins play the guzheng four times, cutting a tree branch, a basin, a cat, and a street lamp. The coolie remains oblivious until the very end, turning around too late, unable to perceive the sound waves, and ultimately losing his head. The tailor's skill is slightly better than the coolie's, able to recognize the sound waves only when they are very close, reacting urgently to evade. The noodle chef, with even higher skill, can see the sound waves from the beginning and adeptly uses weapons to counter and dodge them. The landlady possesses the highest skill level, able to clearly see the entirety of the sound waves.

You should watch "Shaolin Soccer" too. FYI: The guy who kicks really good, he was a Shaolin monk before he became an actor. The other older actors are all legends of Chinese action cinema. The Landlady trains with Jackie Chan. The landlord was Bruce Lee's stunt double. Watch more Stephen Chou movies and you'll see the other stupid members are of his team he usually work with. The action choreographer is the most influential choreographer in China, who did The Matrix, Drunken Master Kill Bill 1 and 2,Crouching Tiger hidden dragon. His pupil includes, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen. Chou is the king of comedy of Hong Kong. So this movie is a group of master film makers, getting together to have fun and be silly. Chou said this movie is a love letter to hollywood. Axe Gang=Ganster of New York, the China town branch. The Axe Gang leader usually plays Bruce Lee in paradies. Watch Shaolin soccer and you'll see him play Bruce Lee as goalie. The blood filled hallway= Jack Nicholson's "The Shinning". When Chou threatens the mute girl, "Casablanca" poster behind them. And Looney Toons were obvious , Coyote and the Roadrunner. 🤣

Best years for Hong Kong comedies have to be from the 80's to late 90's. All sort of comedies can be found from those era: kung fu comedies, vampire comedies, police detective comedies and even those ancient chinese war time comedies. Try watching their chinese vampire comedies...you will laugh your whole stomach out. They even have very good serious chinese ghost movies, kung fu movies...and all that are from those years. Kung Fu hustle is 1 of those few remaining movies that still managed to attract the 2000's new and old fans of those old years comedies. Now.... they have no more good comedians, screenwriters and directors that can relived such golden years of 80's Hong Kong movies.

Space Balls - very silly and funny. For some pop-culture-jokes it's helpful if you know Star Wars 3. Kung Fu Panda - very sweet and funny movie. Jack Black voiced the panda and he's just amazing. Surprisingly funny to adults for a kids movie. But be prepared for some powerfully emotional scenes, too. Enjoy!

I think these are his best films. Some of his later films are good too (Project A, Police Story, First Strike, Armour of God, Operation Condor, Rumble in the Bronx, Mr. Nice Guy, Who Am I, Gorgeous, and Little Big Sokdier, but I think his late-70s and early 80s films are the best. Some friends suggested that he make a couple of films in Asia to show to Hollywood executives. The BIG BOSS / Fists Of Fury made him a superstar overnight in ASIA. The Chinese Connection/ Fist Of Fury was an even bigger success! Return/ Way of the Dragon, Bruce had authority over filming. He starred, wrote and directed the film. Introducing Chuck Norris to audiences in one of the most memorable fight scenes in movie history. Finally , instead of going to Hollywood, Hollywood came to him ENTER THE DRAGON was the first martial arts film to be produced by a Hollywood studio: Warner Bros. It was the opportunity that he was waiting for. It's very sad that Bruce Lee died before he got a chance to see the movie! Enter The Dragon made him a LEGEND. He would have definitely been offered roles in Hollywood after that movie. He was 32 ! Oh, and if you want comedies, Watch another cool trilogy that stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker: RUSH HOUR (action comedy) If you liked Kung Fu Hustle You will love these films I'm recommending you Hope you decide to check them out. Take care

44:45 😳 Whoa. Bruce Lee vibes. This movie has shown a _few_ scenes I've suspected may have been inspired by _The Matrix,_ and _one_ scene I suspected _might_ have been inspired by _The Shining,_ but _that_ is definitely an allusion to Bruce Lee.

The fight choreographer is the same as The Matrix, IIRC. Also, the bloody hallway was a reference to The Shining, many scenes were references to Bruce Lee, and the books at the end were all references to different Wuxia fighting styles or characters.

This film is absolutely entertaining! Stephen Chow did Shaolin Soccer as well. There's another film called Mahjong that you might be interested in. Please do some Jackie Chan films like First Strike, Rumble In The Bronx, Supercop, Police Story, Legend of Drunken Master, Mr. Nice Guy, or Who Am I? Thanks! If you'd like to react to a Donnie Yen film, I'd suggest Iron Monkey, Hero, or Shangai Knights.

Sorry for my English, but nearly everybody of you is missing the point, when he turned his enemy into his student. He wanna kill him, now he would do anything to protect him. When he lost last fight, he expected to die. All he wanna to know was the name of technieuq his oponent used. Instead of killing him, he told him: "If you wanna learn, i will teach you". This is what we should do with our enemies.

If you see a movie with Jackie Chan, Jet Li, or Donnie Yen, they are considered to be some of the Hong Kong Greats. Nowadays, they aren't really able to do some of the heavy or hard stunts that they used to do in their prime. So they are always referred to as the Greats. Because like this movie, Kung Fu Hustle, they came from a generation that produced timeless martial arts classics and masterpieces for us to enjoy.

For those who are fans of Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow) movie. Kung Fu Hustle 2 is coming soon and this was confirmed by Stephen Chow himself a month ago (as the time I'm writing this). But, it won't be him as the main actor in the next movie and the era is not the same as the first movie. My guess is the next Kung Fu Hustle 2 will be sometime in late 2023 or 2024.

All your comments being confused I'll put it simple, they are Asian, so this is like an anime :p Japanese do Anime, Chinese do Live Action (real people) Chinese do these super heroe movies before they were super heroes movie, their powers in all these kind of movies come from Kung Fu training being hidden masters, there are many many movies like this where they have some kind of superhuman fantasy powers they developed by training this is why you see Chinese movies people walking on trees almost floating or jumping crazy distances, so that is the reason why there were so many people with these powers, just enjoy it like a super hero movie, this was like the born of a new super hero "the palm of Budda" master.

Edit: This has the better dub than the one I got. I think I still prefer the English sub. I prefer the English dub personally. It just adds to the comedy, I find. But I don't know that Netflix or whatever have the English dub on them so you'd need the DVD/Blu-Ray which is probably why no one reacts to that version. The English version of the Ice-cream thief scene where the guy laughs, when he takes a breath it's only to laugh even louder. It's childish and maniacal. Or the "Whose throwing handles?" line at the failed knife assassination.
