Hot mud is beautiful. Anyone who worked with a mortar before will not be afraid of hot mud. The main advantages are - it shrinks very little and hardens quickly, allowing to finish with regular mud on top the same day. And you really can't avoid it where you need a thick layer. But don't spread it thin - it may dry before hardening and then it won't hold. It's a chemical reaction where water combines and becomes whole with the powder. If it evaporates before that, this won't happen. I'd avoid putting a fan on hot mud for this reason.

Why did you not stagger the drywall?

That's actually a great question. You're the first to comment on that. In the process of putting together a recording room I just threw some rock up to be a backdrop never intending to tape it. You're right, you always stagger seams.

It's all about the application. general rule of thumb is to stagger the joints but by no means the golden rule. Sometimes not staggering the joints gets the job done more efficiently with less actual joints. if the framing and the hang are solid, it usually won't matter in the end, and the extra strength that would come from staggering would be nominal and likely not necessary.

@@Rick-the-Swift The problem with not staggering the boards is that you have 4 intersecting points instead of 2, which means it could crack more easily. By staggering the boards, you are interlocking and creating a stronger foundation. I've been taping drywall for 36 years, and I've never seen anyone, including multiple pro companies, not stagger the boarding.

Remember, life's a joke we all die in the end. Your project may seem daunting but it can simply be scrapped and started over. I like your videos. Here's a suggestion. When you mention another video, include the link to that video in the description. Otherwise, it can be hard for me to search for it. Furthermore (since I'm a KZbin creator), I know that your videos will rank much higher if someone views a subsequent video. If you have time, go back to videos you have already created, and add the links.

What do you think about using spray foam in the place of hot mud for filling larger gaps?
@drywallinstruction1766

@@drywallinstruction1766 Thanks for the reply! I got the idea from another popular KZbinr. And since I posted this comment I used the foam on the ceiling gaps and hot mud on the wall's side corners. The mud is easier to work with but the foam doesn't sag and fall out on the ceiling while drying as much so I tried it out there. It cuts super clean IF you use the right serrated blade. I'll let you know how it tapes and finishes if you'd like? PS this is my first time doing drywall and your videos are a huge help.

It is hot mud. My personal opinion is that it was never intended to be sanded. Once dried and cured it is a very hard product. Hot mud is the best thing ever for doing repairs, you can tape, coat , and use a wet rag to blend into existing texture and then texture immediately. People also use it to do a first or 2nd coat just to speed up the process. Good luck to you!
@krehbein
@krehbein 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment about it not intended to be sanded. I have noticed when I use it for projects around the house it takes quite a bit of work sanding it if I'm not careful feathering edges and avoiding mounds. I'll have to try the lightweight mud on my next project. Also, can you use the wet rag technique only when your going to texture? Everything in this area is smooth only. What kind of rag do you use so you don't leave lines? Thanks and appreciate your videos.

When you use hot mud, or regular mud, do you blend each coat from first to last? I seem to really have a problem when using hot mud with the webbed tape. Another thing, I noticed in my 90 minute mud, directions say nit to blend with any other type mud. I have used hot mud for first and second coat then finished with regular several times with no problem I am aware of.

Web tape is ok for tailored edge jobs but bunk for butt joints. I switched back to paper for that reason. And all my first coat is hot mud, especially filling gaps where hot mud is ideal. A 40yr pro called it liquid wallboard. Because it hardens vs drying, gap filling won't shrink or drift over time as ambient moisture fluctuates where drying mud can creep over time. I pre full every butt, taper & corner gap w/1 pad of hot mud regardless and set paper in hot mud. For exterior I only use hot mud throughout for moisture resistance.

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge - very helpful! I thought you mentioned something about taping with hot mud...did I hear you correctly? Is this something you practice and recommend? My upcoming project has somewhat of a time constraint on it so an overnight option with mixed taping mud would be my second choice. But if that's the only way, then so be it. Your videos are becoming my go to source as I learn more about working with drywall. Thanks, again!

You're very welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! You absolutely can tape with hot mud but you need to remember the time required to mix your mud and be sure not to plan on sanding your hot mud. The benefit of premixed mud is that it's ready to go and easier to sand. On repairs and very small projects I always tape and coat with hot mud but I always wipe with a wet rag instead of sand. Remember that when using pre-mixed mud that you can coat immediately after you put your tape on, it doesn't have to dry. Check out what's going on @ Drywallinstruction.com!

Got it, thanks. This is a repair (cracked tape on a smooth ceiling) with a new coat of paint over the entire ceiling afterwards. I might try the hot mud method; the work is being done is in a fancy dining room so simple/minimal clean-up with wet rag smoothing is attractive. Thanks for the reminder on top coating immediately after taping with pre-mixed (then sand when cured - I still need to watch your sanding videos). Definite time saver over my previous thinking. BTW - You mentioned in one of your other videos that working with drywall can be fun and enjoyable - I'm beginning to agree thanks to you! I'll keep my eyes open on the website. I appreciate your timely reply!
