Very interesting. I've found that a very strong miniature rare-earth magnet, glued on to a stick as a handle, is useful to lift the reed and make a gap, before slipping the brass/bronze reed lifter under to hold it.

I am so glad this video exists. Just got my hands on two hold piano accordions and was struggling with understanding the process for tuning but this has really made it simple. Great video. I was wondering, do you have any tip for repairing bellows, whether it is possible to apply some sort of adhesive or filler to seal old leathers in the corners of each bellow. For air gaps or small pin holes. Also is the tape merely decorative or does this also tighten up the bellows air pressure? Really appreciate this video and the whole series and its been keeping me occupied during this difficult time.

That would be tremendously helpful, if you have any tips in the meantime i would really appreciate, love these videos and your little jokes every now and then!. Also would you have any recommendations for the cent differences to acheive a sound similar to this recording....kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHipn3aifZV4b5Y Im a realtively young folk musician from nottingham and ive got the accordions to beef up my songs bassically....

Superb and fascinating video. Thank you. Two questions. 1. I don’t understand the physics. Why does scratching produce change in one direction whilst scraping the tip does the opposite? 2. Do you ever run out of reed to scrape or scratch away?
@MelodeonTunes3 жыл бұрын
Filing the tip reduces the mass at the tip and thus increases the frequency of occilation, scraping the other end reduces the mass at fixed end for the opposite effect. Yes you can run out of metal, if you file the tip too much the end becomes too flexible and the pitch will vary.

Thanks Lester, would you advise taking the reeds out for cleaning and tuning one at a time or replace them all in the block and then tune ? I've made my own bellows set up from a small u/s accordion from e bay for £9 ! Bargain.
@MelodeonTunes4 жыл бұрын
I would remove then all at the same time as it makes cleaning the old wax off the block very much easier
@adrianpolley94194 жыл бұрын
@@MelodeonTunes Thanks for the reply but I meant should I put them all back in the block before tuning or try and tune them one at a time out of the block ? Thanks.
@MelodeonTunes4 жыл бұрын
It is important that you tune them on the blocks as that is the environment in which they will be played. Tuning off the block will get the reed into the ballpark but when they are waxing in place on the block the tuning may/will change.

@@MelodeonTunes Thanks Lester. My first attempt at repairing so may be some time before I get it done, but I'll try and let you know how I get on. Lester, I understand the excellent explanation on the mechanics of the tuning process, but need a further explanation in terms of how to utilize your tuning chart to tune the wet or “musette” reeds in my diatonic accordion after tuning the straight reeds. I don’t understand how to create the deviation of cents or beats based on the number values supplied by the chart, as they are unlabeled, except for ‘beatings’ and I cannot surmise with any certainty whether the chart represents the difference in reeds measured in beats per minute or cents or hertz. Thank you, in advance.
@Bluegamebird3 жыл бұрын
For further clarification, I desire to use the Hohner set of values.
@MelodeonTunes3 жыл бұрын
@@Bluegamebird The chart shows the offset for each reed so, for example, D4 Hohner shows 20 cents, I would therefore tune one reed to pitch and the tremolo reed to pitch + 20 cents, and so on for each pitch and its offset. The amount of cents offset decreases as the pitch rises to maintain a consistent beat frequency across the box. Hope this helps

Lester. How do we know the beat rates for each note on say a Hohner pokerwork with two reeds per note? Is this charted in that Dirk tuner on your pc? What mini tuner are you using? Is it a Petersen? Which would you advise to get? Thank you for sharing. I am going to have a go as this is just so interesting. Peter
