We used to build racing mowers years ago and also used the Spicer six speed transmissions. I liked them because you really only had to use the clutch going into first or reverse after that you couldn’t miss a gear. You might skip a gear, but it didn’t hurt anything. We also figured 3 inch pulleys on the transaxle was about as fast as you’re going to get because when you go any smaller, there’s just not enough surface area to hold a belt. I think 11 1/2 diameter pulley is what we used to run on the engine and we liked the 12 horse Briggs single cylinders with the governor disconnected.
@DieselFuelNetwork2 ай бұрын
Most of the mower transaxles are pretty stout. I have a Spicer with a much faster gear ratio that I'm gonna try. The transaxle in it now is a Peerless MST206 6-speed. Very reliable gearbox. I have found the same limitation with the 3" pulley, which I am running. I've tried 2.5, and after two runs up the road, the belt was toast. I'm running a 7" on the engine as that's the largest I can fit with the stock clutch location. I've actually had this machine about 10 years. Around 6 years ago, I did most of what's done to it now. Last summer, I dug it out and made some major changes, and I still have a lot I want to do. Thanks for watching

@DieselFuelNetwork2 ай бұрын
Thanks. It doesn't do too bad for the tires that are on it. To start with, I used longer axles from a hydrostatic trans. Can't remember what model. I welded bolts to the end of the axles to extend them. But importantly, the hub still rides on the axle. The bolts just allow them to be pushed out a bit and still be retained. Same on the front J-spindles. I am also running 2" wheel spacers all around.

This is my first time viewing your video's. So if you have done this already then forgive me for not knowing. But did you remove the governor in the engine. And maybe go with a better fuel. Take for example 93 octane or even nitro methane. Better spark is always helpful. Also, I think that shorting up the accelerator cable. In other words tighten that up. Now these are just thoughts that's it. You do whatever you would like to ok. Take care that thing is great to watch. So thankyou
@DieselFuelNetwork2 ай бұрын
Thanks. I'm not sure what you mean about the throttle cable. It's working as designed. I set it up to have a long travel pedal for more linear operation. The governor is removed. These engines run out of steam between 4500-5000 rpm with the stock cam. There would be no benefit to running more than 87 octane, as these engines have low compression and mild ignition timing. If I advance the timing, I will probably run 93 just to be safe. Thanks for watching

@@DieselFuelNetwork well that's cool, you look just like a guy I grew up with. His name was Terry but he ended up moving away. Any how what your doing reminds me of the stuff we all did growing up. Had allot of fun, got into allot of trouble but it was all worth it. My best friends father would go elk hunting every winter so for a short couple of years we would take out his dad's brand new 340 TNT F/A ski doo until it was too warm out one year and burned a hole in one of the pistons trying to make it across some 3M property and the snow was to sticky to get that sled up on top to catch air and burned her up. We got back to my friends garage and he just sat there on the sled depressed and trying to deal with what his dad is going to do to him when he gets home. And one of his older brothers was really giving him a hard time making things worse. So like 45 minutes go by and I'm looking around the garage and what did I see, a motor next to a 640 hurth that's painted red and I ask Dave " hay" what's that other motor on the shelf over there!!! It looks just like your dad's motor. And Dave says " ya" that's Bodines old 440 out of the sled he just jumped out. He went on to say that the seal's are out of the lower end. So I sat back down just as depressed as my friend cuz I know what his dad's going to tell me. Bill go home and don't come back till your told you can!!! I've heard it more than a few times from his dad. So just out of curiosity I took a small tape measure and measured the distance on the head bolts and the jug bolts and I'll be a son of a bitch!!! There the same!! I yelled!!! My buddy says " what did you say"? I said there the same Dave, let me switch them from your dad's motor to this one! What do we got to loose!!!! And Dave didn't hesitate, he said get it done... I was excited cuz I don't see nothing stopping this from happening. The only thing that could screw this up I was telling myself is the fact that we are using the 340 bottom half with the 440 top half. There both F/A motors so why wouldn't it work. I was all worried about the ports not being the same but I'll be damned they lined up. Now I'm on the down hill buttoning up the rest of the stuff and everything has to be perfect becouse of Dave's dad!!! I looked at my buddy and said well let's see if she starts. Three pulls and it comes to life!!! Dave yells at me to open the garage door and I do. He shoots out the garage and locks up the brake and tells me to jump on so I close the garage door turn around and go to jump on the sled and before I know it I was sitting on my ass watching him shoot down the driveway slide sideways into the street with that crazy grin and laugh my buddy's got and he gun's it!!!! Both skies are off the ground and he's gone!!! I couldn't believe how much more faster that sled was. Wow!!! Dave come shooting by again and yelled at me to open up the garage. So I open it up and he comes flying into the garage shuts it off and is yelling and rejoicing about how good a job I did on it and how it fly's. So I really thought I bailed my best friend out of a really bad situation, a long with myself as well. Cleaned up the garage, put the old parts on the motor on the shelf to cover our ass's and hopefully everything will be cool!!! Right!!!! His Dad came back took it for a ride in the morning and didn't say nothing to nobody. Guess he got thrown from the sled just crossing the street to the trails and that's when he must have put two and two together and realized just what we had done to his sled. His dad just coming back into town had to go down to the fire hall until around four or five o'clock so me and Dave were hanging out in the garage thinking we are golden cuz Dave is telling me his dad had the sled out that morning and nothing was said. So we were not expecting his dad's rath but as soon as his dad came home he walked into the garage, thrown me right out of his way, I landed against the stove barrel and melted my choppers and a nice hole in my parka looks me dead in the eyes and says""" Baillie take your ass home!!! Your grounded from here till spring!!!! I didn't waist any time getting the hell out of there!!! My poor buddy, you should of heard his voice! You could hear the fear in his voice. Begging for mercy from his dad!!! All I know is I didn't even call down there to check on him. I waited till we went back to school after Christmas vacation. Lol. I guess what pissed his dad off is when he crossed the street on his sled that morning and hit the throttle the sled through a rooster tail of snow into the street and his dad wasn't ready for that kind of power to ramp up that fast and left him sitting in the street on his ass as the sled jumped up on top of the snow bank and rolled a few feet forward. But what maid him so pissed off was he is the fire Marshal of power home town and someone driving by that knew him stopped, rolled down there window and proceeded to say some slick comment to my buddy's dad. That's what pissed him off! He was embarrassed!!! And it was our fault! Lol. No good deed goes unpunished!!! WOW, what a mess we were growing up in my home town! I miss those days.....

I still have the stock rods, and I've been running this same engine for many years. The important thing is that I keep it under 5000 rpm, and most of the time, I'm not revving it over 4500 rpm. Only real mods are an equal length 2-1 header, and the carb is jetted to match. So the engine will last forever like that. Thanks for watching 👍
