Finally caught some mackerel! These are the first I have seen this year. Where have they been? Round Poole they used to appear late June early July, last year they were end of August before we caught any and this year it is into October! All the way from Cornwall to Poole mackerel have been hard to come by - overfishing? Changing behaviour because of fishing, warmer water pushing them more north? Would love to know.
Mine were destined for the hot smoker and in this video, I run through how I do it. I used Oak sawdust for the smoke this time, though I usually like beech for fish. Turned out really well though and I will certainly be using Oak again.
I am lucky enough to have a large concrete shelf in the greenhouse, so no risk of fire and it is very easy to keep clean and sterile. This was where i filmed and prepped everything. It also keeps me from getting in trouble with fish smell and scales in the kitchen!
