I've tried drag soldering before, and I didn't do anywhere near as good as you... Fab video Chris, I learned a lot. I quite like these Sunday mornings of yours. I could get used to it!

I think it’s down to using a lot of flux it really helps. It’s not a problem like most things just needs practice. I found the alignment the hardest part.

Having evolved decades ago, pre-SMD, I know pretty much nothing about this stuff so Chris please accept my thanks for explaining and demonstrating the basics. It also served perhaps as a bit of a warning to approach this kind of minute faffing about with caution as although you claim to be clumsy, I'd knock spots off you in any clumsy competition. Despite seemingly having opposable thumbs, I sometimes attempt to pick up things, and they just vanish, or sometimes fly across the room as though by supernatural/ poltergeist action.

When I got my hot plate (a smaller but similar unit) I took it apart to find a nice earth lead bonded securely to the chassis with a locking washer and nut covered in red thread sealer. Right next to the nut was a "Quality Pass" sticker. Unfortunately that earth wire was completely isolated by the paint, and the entire device was floating... 😂

Hi Chris. Interesting demo of the hot plate. I’ve never used one but I think it could be useful for pre heating boards. Solder paste can be a pain to use. I apply it with a cocktail stick rather than the syringe. Cheers Graham

Thanks Graham. The paste I was using was dry and claggy it didn’t really want to stick on the pads. I will try a cocktail stick next time

For your smd resistors, you could smear the solder paste on to a sheet of paper, then pick up a resistor and drop it on the paper to coat the legs under side only, then move the part onto the pcb pads. heat up and the part is soldered by its wetted feet (needs better shoes :-D ). Its just a thought, and i do talk some shi lol You do really well with tiny soldering, if i try to solder a resistor it stands upright lol. Dam surface tension. Your heat box, i would remove all the screws and use a dremel to remove the paint around every earthing hole (both sides of the metal). Star washers just jumped to mind. I have a paint stripper gun and i had a victim usb memory stick that had a memory that was not soldered down fully. I know this as i could see light under the solder blobs. I found the no 1 heat got nowhere fast. So number 2 500degrees, and i expected chip death, it smoked but worked fine !!. I got away with it as i didnt give a shi..t about the usb memory lol. Sorry chris, ultra waffle mode. Smashing video :-D

You need to juse a soldering tip with the hollow in the middle that holds a reservoir of solder as you wave across, this will also remove any excess ccess solder and liquid flux not gell.

Yes I will probably get one of those but the knife tip is designed for drag soldering kind of multipurpose. Didn’t really have a problem soldering it was just the alignment of that fine pitch chip that was really hard. Mainly because I couldn’t see the whole of it. I have a binoculars microscope that may work better but the Andonstar is better for the filming. I enjoyed you video would like to have seen you put the chip back in.

I think your green plastic tube is too big. I have a small blunt needle on mine and don't have any trouble dispensing tiny amouts of solder paste.

The plunger was really stiff. I should have checked the date or perhaps warmed it up a bit so it would pump better.
