Hot to Mix Afrobeat (Naija Style) Vocals (using Cubase)

I made this video to show one of the ways an afrobeat vocal can be mixed. There are several ways but this is one simple way to get a professional sounding afrobeat vocal.

For the delay you should apply a side chain compressor so that it brings down the volume of the delay when the singer is singing a phrase and then comes back up when the is a silence. This method will clean up your mix even further! Also you can add an eq to the reverb to cut out some of the low and high end from the reverb.

Good point! I do that on some mixes but generally in Afropop, the delay is deliberately left 'noisy' and 'echoey'.

As explained, you set up the compressor as a send. Squash it heavily (fastest attack, fastest release, ratio 10:1 and above) and then send only the required amount.
