Do your vocals sound boring or lifeless?
Perhaps they were recorded and performed well, but just need a little something to spice them and make them pop?
Let me offer you 5 simple effects (that you already have in your software most likely) that can help take your vocals from zero to hero.
Whenever you get stuck with mixing vocals, simply reach for one or two of these effects to see if they can give your vocals a little lift.

Cool video. For years I thought more reverb meant better vocals, but I've found all it does is make the vocal sit further and further back in the mix. I usually try to stay away from reverb on vocals now unless it's real subtle.

You can try adding pre-delay to keep the vocal up front while still having that really wet sound, if it suits the song.

Your trick with singing multi vocals worked like a charm. I’ve done the copy and paste, layering, altering slightly for delay, but never thought about singing along to double the vocals. I’ve been working on a song, turned out great except the vocals weren’t quite “vibrant” enough. Singing over top of original worked like a charm. I have gotten quite a bit of useful recording mixing advice from you over the years. THANK YOU FROM TEXAS and keep on posting. Much appreciated.

This short vid taught me many invaluable lessons, so thanks a lot, i always wanted to cut back on my over-reliance on reverb for vocals but never knew quite what to put there instead. Since i also grew to like the song while listening to it, i followed the link in the description. Two things stood out: (1) uploaded 1 year ago and only...110 views?!? Wtf? (2) i didn’t really like the final vocals mix for one strong reason: too obvious! This vid worked really well because it showcased the effects in a subdued manner, with hints of the effects. The final mix relied too obviously on effects to make the vocals cut through the mix (e.g. 2nd layer vocal harmonics effect too high in volume so the top end of the vocals is placed somewhere above the whole band’s wall of sound which is ok if you wanna showcase the dude on vocals but kinda doesn’t work if you wanna stick to what i perceive to be the true vibe of the song). Almost like the sound engineer felt compelled to push some effects into the “obvious zone” in order to justify the fee (many lawyers do the same, for instance, when asked to review a simple agreement: in order to justify the fee, they’ll not stick to the very necessary items but rewrite and amend as much as possible the content so that the client gets a sense of worth for the top dollar they paid).

Consonants like "s" and "t" tend to get muddy when you add a straight double - I would cut the very top of the highs on one track, since you really only need one set of articulated consonants. The pitch in the voice is all on the vowels, in the mids and mid/highs - that's where the "chorus" effect really sounds best I think.
@99tunesforyou_michelle_wright
@99tunesforyou_michelle_wright 5 жыл бұрын

@@99tunesforyou_michelle_wright I meant to say I'd EQ one of the doubled voice tracks, to reduce the high-end frequencies. That way only one of the doubled vocals is providing the high-frequency consonants. Just my preference of sound
