Not only the gloss to the helmets is different between the two movies, hence the difference in figures but also the neck grill triangle thing, ROTJ helmet had a massive vent where the ANH helmet had a tiny vent. These two are pretty much perfect for the movies they represent. The differences are suppose to be there.

That 3-piece leather suit is really impressive. David Prowse wore a 3 piece suit for the films, so seeing that pants, jacket, vest combo is a really impressive bit of accuracy.

The variances you notes with saber and helmet are pretty accurate to each movie. Vader's helmet did go from asymmetrical in ANH to symmetrical in ROTJ. The vent under the chin, ANH was smaller than in ROTJ. Both have their plus and minuses. The big minus to me, from a look wise, are the chicken arms on the SSC Vader. The arms need more muscle.

Must've been a great review as I stuck out the whole 50min. Thought I'd mention I bought a Darth Malgus body and helmet to replace the sideshow, it's around 33cm tall with muscular forearms and all the hands, feet and head matched the peg sizes. I just had to wrap some foam rubber around his waist being too slim in that area. BTW The ANH Vader chest box didn't light up in the movie. I was surprised when I found this out. Also the neck chain disappeared under the neck in most scenes in Anh. Love the quilted HT jumpsuit, may need to take in those Popeye forearms though, not that you should after paying so much, although it is all about achieving screen accuracy. Hopefully I'll have some vids on my custom 1/6,1/4 and life size by the end of this year. Too many projects and loving it. Visit us in Brisbane

I've been wanting a good, quality Darth Vader for my small collection and I'm very picky about anatomical and facial (in this case helmet) accuracy. These examples both seem to have very accurate helmets, but I thought the Hot Toys Vader's legs were too short even before I watched your video. I even left a comment questioning that on another video. Now I'm sure. I left you an answer to your shin guard question that I'm POSITIVE is correct but I forgot to address it to Kool Kollectables. I just changed the batteries over in my sideshow vaders base and low and behold the duracell aaa from australia don't work, if you check the aaa batteries that sideshow gave with the figure, the nib or point on the end is much longer than the duracells so now i am trying to work out where to get aaa batteries with a longer nib/point. Great comparison video, i own both of these figures and they both have good and bad points, hot toys finish is a little better but i still prefer the sideshow vader.

both lightsaber hilts are correct to the movies they represent, the sideshow bodysuit looks cheap... I prefer the hot toys in every aspect, its accurate to the movie in every way, the only thing I'm on the fence about are the gauntlets

The two are very similar to the movies but it is not just the comparison because the sideshow is from the empire strikes back and the hot toys is a new hope, as a curious fact in a new hope the coat had no chain on the neck, and the shoulder pads were totally black in the empire it strikes back

Enjoyed your review I have both of these and like both of them. For the chest controller the hot toys and sideshow are accurate to there movie versions in A New Hope the chest never lights up only the green buttons on the belt and in some scenes it lights up blue. The sideshow armor with the hook for the cape is accurate for empire and Jedi but didn't have it for a new hope. in some scenes the chain was under the helmet and others it was right around his neck. I like them both although I prefer the Hot Toys helmet. I also like the slight weathering on his chest armor for the Hot Toys version.

What's interesting is that when you look at each individual component side by side the Sideshow seems to win out more often than not: better electronics in the chest and belt, better belt, better cod piece, better neck chain, etc. But when it is all put together side by side the figures as a whole take on a different vibe. I was looking at this review to see which one I should get and while watching I thought I was convinced the Sideshow was the way to go and then when you put them all back together and compare them I thought it was a no-brainer, at least aesthetically: Hot Toys. The Hot Toys just looks right. Interesting review. I appreciate your time going through all of these details. (I find the plastic cape chains on both of them to be surprising and a little cheap looking to be honest. I'm surprised they both went that route.)

Yes, there's definitely pros and cons both ways, and the HT is by no means the clear winner. I think both still look great. But overall for me in terms if quality in the materials used, the underlying body, and the aesthetic, the HT wins out. But I'll definitely be keeping my Sideshow Vader to complement the Hot Toys DX07 Luke. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

I was Google searching for '1/6 Vader figure' and a link bought me here... can't remember if I've watched your video before or not but anyway, nice review... I do agree that they both have their flaws taking into consideration that each represent two different movies. Dunno how anyone would want to fiddle with them awkward lightsaber switches, I have one on my HT Kylo Ren and although it's aesthetically pleasing, it's also a pain in the arse to activate. My Sideshow Vader is a hybrid of the two, I did some major modifications on it using parts from both SSC and Hot toys. I used a HT bodysuit which fits perfect and pads out the so called SSC 'chicken arms' nicely... I like the SSC mask because you can see the tint on the eye lenses more than the HT version and the nose plug is already sunk in at the correct position where the HT one sits almost flush on the nose edge... I cracked the helmet off of a HT head sculpt and swapped it onto the SSC mask which looks way better proportion wise... Used a HT blade on the SSC hilt because I prefer it's size and it's pointed tip... Not happy with either tunic's or cape's, they just looked frumpy so I bought the lforigno51 custom tunic and cape made from rayon/spandex which drapes more natural, the downside to this is their color, the black isn't as deep or rich as the SSC, nor is it shiny like the HT, I'll go back and dye them. I own two SSC Vaders, one that I modified and a stock one, and I can honestly say with them standing side by side, the mods I did on the hybrid are a huge improvement. Cheers

I think both versions definitely have their pros and cons. I do hear that the new Hot Toys ESB version of Vader could be the best version yet of Darth Vader. I'll probably pass on that one though. All HT figures have almost 18month wait between announcement and release. The newly announced ROTJ Vader and Threepio won't release until at least Q3 2024. Pretty shit planning if you ask me. They should've planned to release in 2023 for the anniversary, not just announce in 2023.

Interesting to see such a strong Hot Toys bias from the reviewer here, when a lot of the differences can be simply explained by the fact that the Sideshow one is far more authentic to The Empire Strikes Back version of Vader, while the Hot Toys one is closer to A New Hope. Aesthetically speaking, I would have given this comparison to the Sideshow version, and I say that as someone who done who has far more Hot Toys figures than I do Sideshow.

ben murphy There was a company about 10 years ago that made prop replicas of lightsabers there was ANH Vader and a TESB version but they never made a ROTJ version. So some friends and i emailed them to see if they would be making one and they responded by saying that there was not enough of a design difference to warrant a ROTJ version. I know the Sideshow version is based on RTOJ(the TESB version coming next summer) but i didn't know there was that much difference in the hilts.

I don't think I can get over how they killed Han Solo off. It kind of ruins the movie for me. There was alot that I liked about it and it had its faults like you said such as mirroring ANH. I thought Han, Luke and Leia weren't treated with enough respect though. The Force Awakens makes them all seem like losers and down on their luck to me. All their efforts from the OT and the end of ROTJ seem to count for zero in this new film.

+thestig863 You mean the light up saber arm? I do not think they are interchangeable at all, so be careful! The arm on the HT is changeable because of the special forearm joint system. The Sideshow figure just has a regular double jointed elbow, so definitely not swappable!

No, they don't make figures for each other. Sideshow and Hot Toys are two different toy manufacturers that make their own figures. But Hot Toys does not do any direct sales. They have official distributors that sell their products. One of those official distributors happens to be Sideshow. So Sideshow make and sell their own figures, but also sell Hot Toys figures. In some cases, they have collaborated on some figures (sometimes due to licencing), and so both logos are shown. But mostly Sideshow simply sell Hot Toys figures.

Somewhat. I had to customize mine. In ANH the paint scheme was opposite colors applied because on screen his helmet was unreadable. I had to actually paint it the correct way. And It wasnt really a matte finish, just plastic lol. I wound up weathering his suit myself to better represent his likeness to the movie. Its not that HT is better, They were just lazy IMO

Vader 2.0 of SSC is based on Return of the Jedi. However the HT Vader is based on A New Hope. Both are really made differently. SSC did have a Vader 1.0 based on A New Hope which would have been a better comparison in this video. .

I still enjoy my Sideshow ANH Darth Vader that I modded by replacing the dome which was too narrow IMO with the Hasbro electronic Darth Vaders dome which is perfect IMO. Alot of people have done this simple mod which makes the figure look 10 times better. With the mod its good enough for me. I don't like how Hot Toys did the gloves on their Darth Vader with the 2 separate pieces. Plus the voice effects are a waste of time and look like a pain in the arse to operate!

CLEARLY the shin guards go on the way you showed them at first! The extra plastic should be on the OUTSIDE, like an actual human leg. Also if you look at the seam down the middle, it looks more natural. The way you showed it when you reversed them looks SO BACKWARD! I'm not just a toy fan and I'm certainly not a Darth Vader expert , but I AM an artist and model maker and human anatomy is one of my strong areas. I've even done some costume design making..... BODY ARMOR! (of all things) So please trust me. The shin guards go on the way you showed them in the FIRST position.

But that's the way he looked in Star Wars, so they've made it movie accurate to that movie. It was changed in Empire Strikes Back. Luckily with both figures you get both looks and other variations that they bring.

Wow. What a great review. Very detailed and thorough. In the end, both of these figures are too compromised for me. The definitive Vadar has yet to be made. As for scale, the Sideshow Vadar looks more pleasing and accurate to me. The Hot Toys Vadar looks like he ate too many Twinkies. I do like most of detailing on the Hot Toys Vadar more than the Sideshow version but the detailing on both figures is lacking. For instance, a single stitch from a sewing machine looks huge on these figures. Lights should work accurately and Vadar's saber should look real when lit up. A row of LED lights in the sword would do the trick. Also, Vadar's saber isn't scaled correctly either. Vadar is the ultimate villain and if toy companies would sweat the details, collectors would clamor to get ahold of the ultimate Vadar. I would like to step into a room and be fooled into thinking that, yes, that is Darth Vadar. Toy companies? Feel the force.

+davidhunternyc these are 1/6th scale figures so are never going to have the accuracy you're looking for. Perhaps the 1/2 scale or lifesize statues would have.

It's odd because Hot Toys' Ironman is so well sculpted, painted, and proportioned. Ironman looks like a mini version of the real Ironman. Darth Vadar just looks like a posable figurine in comparison.

No, by all accounts the shin guards for the ANH costume are not gloss black, so they are accurate for the movie.

Ah, the classic "Return" of the Sith - Haha who cares I'm kidding. I like the Hot Toys one better, and his few extra pounds don't bother me as I feel like it looks more like Vader's body.

Overall I think the HT version is a better quality figure. But I think most collectors would be happy with either version.

The hot toys body is to fat makes him look silly look at any of the promo shots and in the film vader was not fat tall yeas but not super buff sideshow looks so much better
