When Rock was Real! I’m so glad that I got my musical education during the 60’s and 70’s
@deaddocreallydeaddoc52442 ай бұрын
I gave your comment a thumbs up. I'm a Boomer, too (1952). The truth is, I'm not really sure how much this song or a lot of music that our generation produced can be called "Rock." At least not in the real sense. This piece of music would do fine without any drums. But what's rock and roll without a beat? The 50s was when rock was real. We muddied it up quite a bit. But that's okay, too. The stuff that came out of that was great.

@@deaddocreallydeaddoc5244As most people already know, “Rock” evolved from Rock and Roll, which was heavily influenced by Blues, as well as some elements of Rockabilly, and Country Swing, but music doesn’t always fit into categories. Acid rock, psychedelic rock, southern rock, country rock…..lots of intermixing. The crap of today hardly compares.

I got to sit with Jimmy Carl Black in an empty (almost) bar down in Austin for about 4 hours in 1989. And he was not drinking at all. What a great night. I saw Hot Tuna about 2 weeks after the show in this video and was first in the door so I was front center (no seats ). John Hammond Jr was the opener.

This is a true story. In 1979 I was a freshman in Thomas A. Edison H.S. in Jamaica Queens N.Y. and I on all the desks I encountered "hot fuckin tuna" written or carved into them. I had no idea who they were until now. All I can say is fuckin wow, wow, wow. Hot fuckin tuna is still the shit!!!!

Jorma and Jack on 4/16/23 at the Skokie (Illinois) Arts Center. Looking forward to it. Do miss Pappa John tho. Met him once after a show at venue: Vegetable Buddies, South Bend, Indiana late 1970’s. A gentleman. Can’t quite recall who he was performing with at that time, Heartsfield maybe. His was a sweet and unique sound that I’ve not encountered since.

Everyone involved with this performance deserves a Nobel Prize. Including their parents.

It’s nice to see a live version of ,”Water Song”! I’ve listened to the studio version dozens of times. I never noticed the violin in the studio song? However when I saw and heard it I thought of the band ,”A Beautiful Day”. Their song ,”White Bird

Possibly my favorite Alembic bass. But Phil Lesh also has some choice ones. A friend of mine ended up with Dave Torbert's (from the NRPS). But this one here, what a sound - even on my puny laptop speakers. This was prime Hot Tuna as I remember them. Saw them 12 days earlier at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

The tone too. Big, fat, round and on the edge of fuzz. Always recognizable. Never too much. Always serves the song and adds a distinctive touch.

The exact same is true of The Grateful Dead, played for sheer love of music. As Wavy Gravy said after Jerry Garcia passed away, the Dead created a ball of joy they sent out to audiences, who fed off it and sent it right back to the band.
