Hot Vs Cold Connections - Which Is Best For Your Jewelry Project?

I have not yet done riveting as far as cool connections goes. I would like to explore hot connections like working with silver clay, and the kiln. I am however blind do you think either of those would be a real problem? I guess the better question might be is what things might I try in order to make the kiln accessible to me? And is there somewhere where I can get hands-on exposure to a kiln and how to use it? Thank you for any help you can provide.
