Hot water vs Heat Gun when removing a vehicle wrap

We already know that heat works better than no heat when removing a vehicle wrap but not all heat is created equal. Here we show you the difference in removing vinyl with a heat gun, which is what most people use, vs. using hot water. We show you how you could easily halve your removal time with this easy tip.
This was one person with one hot water jug so you could actually do it even faster if you use multiple jugs so there is always one ready to go. Either way the hot water made the job a whole lot faster.
Keep in mind that you have to be careful with hot water around glass, plastic etc so make sure to test and don't pour it directly onto cold glass as you are likely to crack it.

Does it matter how old the wrap is with the hot water. That wrap looks pretty new.

I have a question. Are there any precautions to take when removing a wrap from the rear windscreen? I noticed that the video refers to side panels but no mention of whether you can still use boiling hot water on a windscreen.

Hi Elix, yes should work fine with old wrap. We'd recommend you try it on a small section first and go from there. Remember to be careful around plastic or glass - especially if it is cold.

How hot was the water?

It was freshly boiled water, straight out of the jug. You have to be careful around plastic or glass - especially if it is cold - but we didn't have any problems with it.

Not a fair comparison because he’s indoor with heat gun so wrap us cooler.. out door with hot water the sun makes wrap more pliable

Hi Lester. Thanks for your comment. I was the one that removed the vinyl and can confirm that the temperature between both indoor and outdoor was very similar, approx 18 degrees. It was a cloudy day with no direct sun and done in June (winter for NZ). We have also tested this in other scenarios and always found the water to work more effectively than a heat gun but please try it for yourself and see what you think.

Im in the trade and the guy milked the heatgun method, its not that slow!! but he is right that the water way is better, faster and cleaner, and it does work well with brittle old wraps were heat gins are rubbish

What if i use hot water on plastic body of motorcycle is it fine with that?

We haven't tested it on plastic so would suggest that you do a small test first in case there are any issues with water in the engine/electrics or plastic distortion. You may be better just using a heat gun for safety.

Lol how many liters do that water cooker hold!? IF i can borrow that i wood do it,whit water.. If not i have to cook 20liters min to uwrap my car.. And that is if the sun has heated it up frist...

We only used one jug, refilled each time, for the rest of the car - which meant filling it up and waiting for it to boil each time. If you are going to use this method we'd highly suggest buying 3-6 jugs to make sure you always have hot water ready to go.

Great idea cos you can do it in the rain. Where i live i’d be waiting a month to use a hot air gun outside without killing myself

I would us an outdoor grille with 6 burners and a quick shutoff hose to refill each time i empties and put if back on a burner.....by the tijme i get back to it, it should be boiling again....an even faster way to make that wrap disappear is to park the car in a bad part of town with the keys in it......vinyl should be gone in an hour or less.
