Live in North Texas. Based on recommendation from my fertilizer company a few years ago, started cutting my St Augustine a 4". With the exception of spots where my sprinkler system doesn't cover, the grass does much, much better. Still have too much sidewalk sprinkling so am going to have sprinkler heads moved.

Could add more nutrients to your existing soil with fertilizer amendments instead of bringing in dirt and breaking your back. Golf courses grow grass on pure sand by doing this. I'm not stopping you, do what you want to do. But it's unnecessary.

@@slimdude2011 This is a myth perpetuated by boomers. Heat does not increase the chance of burn, the fertilizer itself may burn if you apply too much, just like any other time of year. Summer fertilization is fantastic, especially for southern lawns when the grass is growing actively. Top dressing is ridiculous.

These are great guidelines to follow. Unfortunately, for people without an irrigation system like me, moving hoses and setting sprinklers around your lawn can be an all day affair. I think the most important thing is to know your lawn well enough to be able to recognize the signs of drought and heat stress. I try to only water when I notice my lawn struggling and it's worked out well for me so far.

I don't like irrigation systems either, I prefer watering my lawn manually with sprinklers because, you can position the sprinklers directly where you want the water to go, especially if you have a small lawn. Irrigation systems are installed and used mainly for residential and commercial properties with huge, acres of land. If a homeowner has a small or a medium size lawn, an irrigation system isn't needed. Sprinklers are sufficient. I like watering my lawn. I'm a retiree It gives me something to do to keep me active and doing other things in the yard. I love it!

Pvc piping, metal impact sprinklers, connectors. You can run hoses between or connect as one and water a circle. Best way I found, to put water where it needed to be.

Yeah it takes me about 3 hours to move my single sprinkler around my 1 acre lawn and water it all. I only use a single sprinkler because I’m on a well and I don’t want to exceed the recharge rate of my well, run it dry, and burn out my pump. Looking into modifying the well to improve recharge rate, gett a tankless system for high pressure, and an irrigation system but all of that is going to be like 25 grand. I’m not sure I’m that invested in my lawn.

The key is getting it installed right in the first place based on my bad experience. I have a sprinkler system with 6 zones connected by standard PVC pipe that cost thousands to install and it wasn't done right. It's been an ok value when it works but not a great value with frequent tweaks and a few breaks. I think for the money, the best value appears to be maybe an above ground tractor-style sprinkler that follows a long hose run from the faucet and do that heavily twice a week or so. For the smaller lawn sections, just use a fan-style sprinkler. Anyway that's what I'd do if I had it to do over. For my backyard flower garden I was going to extend my existing underground system but instead am going to just barely bury a good quality garden hose to the garden from the faucet 100 feet, and then connect a 50 foot sprinkler hose to that and run it with a simple timer. That's how much I've come to dislike underground PVC pipe systems in general.

Look up wobbler sprinklers, which have a very gentle circular pattern. Generally available through commercial suppliers of greenhouse and market garden supplies.

I think mowing in the heat of the day is better than morning or night. When it's hot, the grass sucks its moisture and nutrients down out of the heat. If you cut it then, you are removing less moisture and nutrients. I've been doing this for years and have always had a great lawn. Also, I water right after mowing, it makes my lawn very happy.

I water at 5am with well water. Since I have st Augustine I mow at 4”. So far this year my lawn looks great. Usually during the summer it gets a little yellow, not sure why

Totally agree with not cutting too short. I live in northern Louisiana with major heat and poor soil so by late spring am cutting my lawn 1 mower notch from the highest. I also bag all my clippings the first half of the season to minimize weed spread contrary to what the experts say about bagging. The first two cuttings of the year I cut as low as possible to near scalp but from then on increase the height to about 3". For products I put down maximum prodiamine granular in March, followed by maximum Anderson's post-emergent with nitrogen in May, then 1 or even 2 apps of insect killer a year, and finally a light feeding in early fall of lawn food either liquid or granular. Occasionally I've had to spray for nutsedge and clover etc. I spend far less time on the lawn than the guys out there constantly but I feel while I'm not getting fantastic results I'm getting good results considering the reasonable time and money investment.

I live in Texas temps have been 100 degree plus for last 8 days. I water in the morning mainly and do little 2 mins runs around 12pm and 4pm to keep the lawn cool and avoid hotspots.

number 2.... i run a business spreading topsoil on lawns on dormant grass. Yup goes green the next day. I dont pile it one, i use a materials spreader and a brush drag. good watering and it gives a boost a nutrients with nitrogen. Don't do this too early in the spring. You need to learn about mono culture. Yes i said compost and not fill dirt.

Exactly. Not too early but at just the right time the sun will heat up the ground faster and your dormant grass will green up faster. This is a similar reason of scalping the lawn.

As for number one, I always heard that you want to water your grass like 3 times per week and do it deeply so the roots get the water. It kind of annoys me to see people water every day for like 10-15 minutes. I always heard that you should turn on your sprinkler zones and see how long it takes for you to get about a quarter inch or so and do that time each time. And you're so right about number five if people don't read the instructions! a lot of herbicides not to use it if the temp is about 85-90 degrees...

I also see people watering their lawns in the middle of the day, which is actually illegal where I live in central Florida, besides being wasteful, as you mention, considering we've been experiencing temps in the upper 90s recently. I do have to disagree about brown grass not being dead, though, as it depends on the type of grass. Here in central FL, St Augustine grass is very popular. It can take the heat, but it's not at all drought tolerant, so when it turns brown during extended dry periods, it is dead, and not coming back except from runners spreading form areas that are still green.

I water early morning 4a.m, but I do SYRINGE @ each zone for 1 min at 5 the hottest point of the day just to lower the temp of the grass blades. A quick spritz dont you feel better lol .I think that why everyone's grass is brown and mine green in these 100 temp days in texas.

These are all great tips but every lawn is different so maybe what you normally wouldn’t do might work better for others! I have added really good top soil to some dry areas in the past and it actually needed it! Also I only water once a week with a deep soak and my lawn is lush green but there are people who need to mist throughout the week! Do what makes your lawn happy! Just do your lawn!! 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

The big thing is not to have the blades wet; fungus has its chance to grow then. Therefore, watering in the morning allows the blades to dry while the roots are watered.

It's true because if you water the lawn during the peak of the day, when the temperature is 90+ degrees, the water will evaporate almost immediately before it's saturated to the roots. Then all of that water will be wasted.

I think if your lawn needs water, due to hot spots, etc... water it to get water into the soil, it will save your grass and keep it looking nice. After watering in 90+ heat I always check the soil and it's always saturated. if you see your lawn needing water, water it regardless of the time of day. YES, the ideal time to water is early in the morning but if the grass is dry, looking stressed or turning brown....WATER IT.....

Organic slow release fertilizer, Sea Kelp, Potassium help with the stress of lawn during high heat...Also Molasses is good as it works great to kick up the micro biology when its as it most active stages when soil temperatures are higher and can give your lawn a green up without putting down more Nitrogen... Been an active turf guy for years and just recently renovated my lawn to a TTTF/KBG lawn last year here in Upstate N.Y. and over seeding it this year... It's about the soil more than the grass...Keeping PH in line and getting my Macro/micro nutriets in spec has overwhelming made my turf amazingly better...I have heavy clay soil I'm finally ammending and its draining much better now as I had compaction issues for years...I'll be following you now also...Thank you for responding...

I love your content Jessy. I know alot of professional peeps hate mp rotator heads, but you could clip your bill another 30% if you swapped the pgp heads you have running right now. I ditched all my pgp's and now CO requires 40psi heads too but, it ended up saving me so much that I expanded my irrigation system to 3X to do my backyard and side yards too. Same water bill as before. Yes MP rotators are addition babysitting if they stop spinning, but this is very few heads a year that do this. I went from a 9 head pgp system to a customized amazing 75 head mp rotator system that covers every square inch of my property on of my complex yard and garden design.🎉

I have them on the side of my house and I honestly don't mind them. They definitely have a lot more issues than PGPs. But you're right, the coverage with the PGP's suck. I'm always out there adjusting those things to hit locally dry spots. Installers think way too highly of the PGPs and should probably have double the number of them installed compared to what they actually install. Kind of stuck with them now. I'm not going to rip up the front lawn again 😬 Thanks for watching man

Something else I think people overlook is the controller that you choose. I watch the weather closely if I see rain I make sure to override on my phone. I also hooked up flow meters and rain sensors so that my system's not running when I'm not around. It's pointless to water while it's raining here. I also take advantage of the virtual solar sync of my hunter hydrawise controller. I dig down in there and I like to watch how many gallonss go by per minute. It's good to analyze which zones are eating up water and try to understand how much I can cut back on irrigation in other places. This flow meter has paid for itself by a 100 fold being able to see real times statistics and understand which zones have capacity for additional heads too. It's how I was able to max out my 9 zones. My wife and neighbors think I'm crazy, but I like to dominate.

I'm also excited to chase after In line fertigation soon. My challenge is that I water a lot of edible garden beds and I don't necessarily want what's going on my lawn to end up in my edible beds. So I feel like creating some type of a override solinoid control valve that opts out my garden beds from the inline fertilization holding tank supply hose when the ststem runs. Anyways these ez flow tank systems are only 250 bucks at sprinkler warehouse and it allows me to have more control and less time in the yard.

Country Clubs can afford to run their irrigation systems almost 24/7 at full force like that. But when you're a private homeowner and responsible for your own water bill, it can be very costly. Last year when I used my sprinklers in the front and back yard for a week, my water bill for that month was an additional $75.00 more than average. Now, I just wait until it rains. Rainwater is better than tap water anyway. It seems like, rainwater rejuvenates and green up your lawn from a drought much faster than tap water.

Would it be crazy for me to add compost to my lawn and till it in? We have very sandy soil and it holds no moisture. I just did a soil test and for n p k, all 3 weren't just deficient, they were depleted entirely. I can get 4 yards of compost for $15 from the city

I have very sandy soil also. I would not till in compost. You're going to have a bumpy nightmare by doing that. I would start with adding humic acid weekly and spoon feeding starter fertilizer weekly. See if that helps improve things by next year's soil test

@LAWNLIFE my lawn is already a bumpy mess, there's a 5k ft² area that is nothing but up down, with so many holes and depressions from 10+ tree stumps removed by the previous owners. I've added 10 yards of soil but it's hard to fully level out so I'd considered tilling it in and completely renovating. I'll try humic for sure

Lol whats hot to you??? Us landscapers have to mow at 120 degrees in PHX AZ. Grass grows back in a week. Also golf courses cut the grass really short. Im presuming your talking about certain types of lawn.

I hope people listen to this as a lawn care professional this is sound advice. Get over not having it cut, even if you don't like the additional length, for you cool season folks having fescue, unless your lawn is mostly shade, cut it tall. Reminder its called tall fescue for a reason wonder why.

Yea, its not optimal......but if the grass wants to be cooled off or a dry spot is showing it self.....i'm not waiting until 4pm to take care of it.....What if those people that you criticize are just taking advantage of some "evaporative cooling"?.....and not trying to "water" down to the soil? Thinking like this only puts handcuffs on yourself. There is no negative effects on the grass, only benefits. Worst time to water is early night-time.

Hey man, I 100% agree with everything you said here. If there's signs on heat stress you need to get water on it ASAP. I should've said you shouldn't deep water in the afternoon. Hindsight is always 20/20 when making these videos and there is always something I wish I would've mentioned after making it. But yes. You're totally right with this comment. My goal with this video wasn't to criticize anyone, more to be a guide for beginners. I appreciate your input

Cutting grass too short is a sure way to kill your lawn. All and I mean of my neighbors are scalping their lawn and they are wondering why their grass is dead ☠️. I mow at the highest level on my push mower. It’s a pain having to mow more often but it’s worth it

You should not deep water rather syringe during the hottest part of the day so the grass can cool off hence reducing the heat stress.

Syringing is a good way to reduce stress (as repeated from your link)as long the main watering is done in early morning hours. Golf courses water daily and we replace ET. Home lawns water according to soil type, not blanket recommendations.

Unless your neighbor is paying your mortgage or rent and paying your bills, they can't dictate and tell you what to do on your property. Most lawn services start work at 8:00 am, so 10:00 is a reasonable hour for anyone to begin doing their lawn work. You can't help if someone's baby is sleeping. If it's a newborn, they going to sleep off and on all throughout day. Some people have a lot of nerve!

I don’t care if the neighbor has a baby or not. At 10am, I will mow or do whatever I want. It is not 6-8am.
