Hot Wheels Dodge Monaco (302) The Bluesmobile

On the bench today is a 1:64 scale Hot Wheels Dodge Monaco. It’s the very well known and recognizable blue and white Sheriff #701 car. Designed by Larry Wood and Bob Rosas, this debuted in the 1978 Flying Colors series.
This casting has come out in many different themes and paint schemes over the years, including under the names Fire Chaser, Fire Chief, Highway Patrol, and Gleamer Patrol. It is, however, most well known as the Sheriff Patrol, the name with which it was associated with for many years.
The Blues Brothers was a Saturday Night Live act in the 70s, featuring John Belushi and Canadian Dan Akroyd. The Bluesmobile is a 1974 Dodge Monaco sedan that was prominently featured in the 1980 Universal Pictures film. The car is a decommissioned Mount Prospect police car, purchased by Elwood Blues at an auction after he had traded a previous car (a 1968 Cadillac Sixty Special) for a microphone. The Illinois license plate BDR 529 is a tribute to the Black Diamond Riders motorcycle club of Toronto, Canada.

The Bluesmobile has the ability to perform seemingly impossible stunts, like jumping over an open drawbridge, flipping backwards in midair and even flying for very brief periods of time. However, its cigarette lighter doesn’t work!

With this build, "You gotta' THINK (THINK!) What ya' trying to do to me!" My favorite detail is the decal taillights with the missing middle "D" and, of course, the cigarette lighter doesn't work! I realize JL made one already, and maybe Greenlight did too ( now both the same corporate owner anyway) but a labor of love and a gift of love deserves respect and appreciation! So it wasn't "Citizen Kane", but a satire of excess and a bunch of fun! ( So was the decade!) I'm saved by grace anyway, and while not Elwood, I've been risky behind wheel too. [But not in SCMODS!] Have fun with your toys!

Nice restore/custom however, this HW casting represents a "B" body, mid size Monoco, not the Full size Monoco (or Royal Monoco) which is why it has no deck lid tail lamps. Those lamps are actually represented in the rear bumper as per the real car. Again, you did a great job on this.

Is your opening tire screech from the movie? They sounded very similar. One of my favorite movies, you did it justice. The decals were next-level, Andrew. Thanks so much, David. I noticed the similarity in tire screeches too, when editing this together, but my opening sequence is just a generic .mp3 burnout sound. The decals were going to be important on this one, as the HW casting was pretty plain Jane once stripped down. And the weathering kits are a 'must have' for this hobby. Very nice work on one of my favorite cars on one of my favorite castings, although I'd argue that casting is really more of a mix of the later B body Monaco and a Ford LTD, but it certainly looks more the part with the Bluemobile livery. How happy are you with your vaccu-form going straight from the windshield? It looks nice. I was concerned about fitment on that vs making a clay buck off the inside of the windshield.

First of all, this vehicle is a Plymouth Fury, but the Chrysler Corporation wouldn't allow Mattel to have the rights to call that car that name for some reason at the time. Second, Matchbox already has a Dodge Monaco police car. Third, the original Bluesmobile was actually a retired 1974 Plymouth Gran Fury, if my memory is correct. Fourth, Matchbox already has a Plymouth Gran Fury police car model, so, if anything, a Matchbox Plymouth Gran Fury should be used for this build. Finally, as for these police cars, and the Dodge Monaco from Matchbox, I honestly would prefer a redone light bar set up that was identical to the 1980s Ford LTD Crown Victoria police cars from Matchbox, or the oval kind of light bar that would be from one of the Maisto/Tonka toy police cars of the same size as the Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, as they would be infinitely better light bar choices for those cars. The little bumps that are on the top of the Hot Wheels police car and be moved over to the front doors and converted into mirrors, but the ones that are on the hood can remain, and any other little bumps can be put beside the ones that are on the hood and be made into little spotlights.

this casting is based on the 1977/78 Dodge Monaco if you look at the grill it has a split in the middle and the 12 square cut outs for the grill while the Plymouth Fury had a solid grill with a line going horizontal in the middle of it. the original Blues mobile is a 1974 Dodge Monaco the Plymouth Fury's were used as the cop cars that chase it. Remember this car was given to him to custom and he picked the Blues Mobile as the custom he wasn't given the exact car so he worked with what he had. The Matchbox Fury would have needed more work to the front end since it only had single headlights and the Monaco had double.
