Are you planning to add toolboxes
@Jmoffit222 ай бұрын
Nope. I’ve got a baby CDL setup, a 3500, so I’m watching my drive axle weight. I might add storage to the trailer at some point.

0:58 The difference is that items like a toolbox, a fuel tank, and a spare tire are equipment of the vehicle not cargo. I guess tarps could be considered equipment too but it's generally defined as something fixed to the vehicle.

Did your truck throw any codes ? Wanting to pull bed off a 24 gm truck , but I am hearing from bed installer and dealer that truck will have codes because it’s a high country trim level . I noticed you have a high trim truck so hoping you have an answer .

In KommieRado any custom built trailer over 2,000 lbs must have a certified vin, inspection this is coordinated through the country clerks office. The last time I started the process the clerk got snippy with me and I asked her to make sure the inspector brought his certified welding inspector papers with him for my insurance company. The look on her face was priceless..

Questions about the need for this conversion….. what does making this conversion do for your profits? Do you make more money because of it? Does being exempt from the 65 ft rule make more money? I think the max gooseneck you can get is 44-45 ft so how much more cargo are you going to get on a trailer by doing this? Also, I assume you are working steady and putting lots of miles on your setup….. If you do 120k miles per year, how long will you keep that truck before trading it in for a new one? 1 year, 2, holy hell 3!? Again, based on how long you are going to keep it, is it worth the conversion in time and money for such a short time period? You did your conversion relatively cheap and maybe you could carry it with you to the next truck (eventually there would be due enough chassis changes that you probably couldnt) but I am not sure that this is necessary with the effort. Now, do what you want with your own stuff, but those are a few questions I had….. thanks, good luck and drive safe!

Great points. Generally speaking, more deck and weight availability does equal more money. Every little bit helps, especially when you’re tetris’ing partials from the load boards. Some guys opt for a 36’ trailer to leave the stock bed on and be under the 65’ limit and that might work fine for them. It really just comes down to personal preference and what typically gets loaded. For example, my shipper in SoCal loads in 8’ increments so the 40’ allows me to get 1 more stack than the 36’ and I’m able to get around NYC better than if I went with a 5500 with a 53’ step deck… As for the future of this truck, Lord willing I’ll run it till I retire from OTR in a couple years, then my boy will likely turn it into a mobile welding rig. So all in all it just made sense for me to do it this way. Thanks for the questions brother. I have a video planned about cdl, non cdl, truck preference, trailer lengths, GVWR’s…likely touch on these questions a bit more…

Most guys run an auxiliary tank, what's your reason for not running one?
