Mom’s fridge. I love it! So many Houdini tutorials out there are impossible to understand. This is really well done and well communicated. Thanks!!

I love these tutorials. It's like having a buddy over my shoulder showing the no bullshit way of how to go about things and what they are generally used for. Some of the best tutorials I've seen in a long time. More helpful than the official FX tutorials strangely, haha.

Great tut, goes fast and makes everything clear enough to follow! Tiny update: in the Assemble node "Create Packed Geometry" needs to be checked, or the shatter won't work. It's not checked by default. I'm a novice, hunted around till I found this.

If you put an isoOffset node before the scatter it will create more diverse fractures by converting it to a volume and then scattering inside

Just downloaded Houdini Apprentice and this is the first thing I tried out! Wasn't too hard to follow along with and knowing After Effects helped me make sense of null objects, parenting, etc. Great work, man!

Can you make a tutorial to show how you added materials to this fracture animation. I have been trying to apply materials to this scene but I have failed. I don't know how to do that!

if I had an object that I imported which was already made of a bunch of pieces could I still pack it and shatter it the same way? Is there a way to adjust the bounds of the rigid body in case objects overlap slightly?
@psychedlicavfx66465 жыл бұрын
you've probably found the answers by now but in case you havent... yes to the first question. Its mostly dependent on 'connectivity' of elements that you're importing. It could be on a tetrahedralized level or down to individual faces. In most cases, you'd want to 'Pack' or 'Assemble' your sim geo. As for object bounds, you can tweak them in the collisions tab in the RBD object node inside DOPs. Hope it helped :)

Hello, the tutorial was really great and it helped a lot. But how would I export the geometry at the end of this? The final Frame result. As an fbx or obj for instance, I have tried with file node and exporting with save to disk but always get error message when I try to import in blender or maya.
@Miesnermedia4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael! 1st make sure that you're using a version other than Apprentice because that can not export geometry (it's for learning not production). Assuming that that is satisfied File>Export>[pick your poison] -Theo
@michaelbabcock69974 жыл бұрын
@@Miesnermedia that hurts my heart cause it took a while to find this tutorial, which answered all my questions. And you're sure that's the only way to export, I could use an obj as well.

How to save it to Alembic. I can't find.
@psychedlicavfx66465 жыл бұрын
If you are using Free version, Alembic is only available for Importing data. Incase of indie or FX versions, there is Export> Alembic under File menu and there's also ROP Alembic Output node in SOPs.

Isn't Houdini super expensive? doesn't Blender do at least some of this stuff? (genuinely curious).
@mikedoll35534 жыл бұрын
Music Man TV delayed response but this might help someone else with the same question. 1.Houdini offers a free “apprentice” license with nearly zero limitations other than a discrete water mark on renders and you are not supposed to make money with this licence, just learn. There is also and indie license that is priced very reasonably. 2. Houdini and blender are very different. Blender can attempt to do some of the things Houdini does (simulations, particles ect) but it’s not remotely close to the level of Houdini. For context I’m a blender user. Hope this helps (somebody out there)!

I appreciate your effort. But I have to say that if I didn't know houdini (and this is supposed to be a beginner tutorial) I doubt I would understand 90% of what you are doing and why you are doing it. Why a null node? What is a null node? What is the relationship to the parent node? And so on... But of course you can hardly teach Houdini in 14 mins.
@0xmigu4 жыл бұрын
Actually the Null concept is pretty understandable even if you've just played with C4D, Blender or even After Effects. This was by far the best tutorial ive seen of Houdini imo.
@IvoryBell4 жыл бұрын
I didn't think about this since the idea of null objects and parents nodes is common in 3D programs and game design so therefore I know what those terms mean for Houdini as well. Kind of like if I was learning photoshop and didn't know similar programs I would be confused about what a layer or group folders are. It's a good point but this tutorial is one of the best I have seen for jumping into a 3D program (it's not essential to understand every thing he talks about, but through practice you can get the gist of what he's teaching).
