At a recent Houdini meetup, Luc Morroni ( / l.mrni ) came up with quite an interesting tutorial topic: Procedural waffle structures, like the ones used in Sevilla's Metropol Parasol (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropo....
Seems easy enough at first I thought - but as always, the devil's in the details. In this case in the cutouts where the parts slot into each other. So enjoy hearing me waffle on (see what I did there?) about creating those types of structures and making them intersect realistically(ish).

These shorter SOP-focused Houdini vids feel very approachable and are a good learning tool. I hope these are simple for you to make, because I'd love to see more!

Yes, plz more SOP, procedural modeling tuts, especially things that can be exported easily into other packages rather than rendered to frame

Moritz is really enjoying these architectural breakdowns in Houdini 😀.

Can skip the Wrangle and use an expression directly in the Clip SOP's parameters to get the vertical center: centroid(0, D_Y) or bbox(D_YSIZE)/2 if you don't want to reference the centroid.

Hi, really nice results and pretty simple too. I've always been wary of using bools because of the sometimes terrible results in other programs. Now I'll have to explore them in houdini as you said it gives better results. Thanks.

Thank you for making these tutorials. They’re so useful and I’ve learned a lot because of them. I’m sure without entagma I would still be scared of houdini.

Ok now for the B side, let’s see it in Grasshopper 😆 Great vid!

This tutorial was very informative for me , I made the same structure following this tutorial but using blender geometry nodes😀 off course the clipping part for inserts needs some research if any possibility , but blender geos are quite powerful and easier to understand for me as an architect

Just out of curiosity, what type of program do industrial/architect use to design? I assume they aren't using polygon based modeling workflow.

Rhino I'd assume.

Architects use Revit as well. Industrial designers use solidworks a lot in addition to rhino, and both use grasshopper.

You can increase the lower and upper padding in y direction in the bounds node.

I’m loving the parametric architecture stuff. Would love to see more of this, maybe with some industrial design related parametric design stuff like fading surface patterns etc.

I’m someone who used houdini for industrial design, it’s really come in handy ! Sometimes I treat it like grasshopper, sometimes I treat it like polygon solidworks.

A good example of what I’m taking about when I say fading surface pattern would be anything on the Ross Lovegrove-designed Renault Twin’Z. Especially a huge fan of the lower front grille pattern, and Arturo Tedeschi’s version of it on the XEV LSEV car.

There’s a huge number of other fading patterns in use in the automotive industry now, and it’s also coming to industrial design in various forms.
