The river carved out a new path for itself around the Rapidan Dam, and an Xcel Energy substation and a park storage building have also plunged into the waters.

Funny how a politician turns up to "survey the situation", for a photo opportunity, when what is needed is, probably, an engineer!

You can see at 1:39 the concrete wall that used to be against the sandstone "bedrock" is falling, that means the sandstone that side of the dam is anchored to is eroding away. Too much of it goes and the dam itself could still break apart.

I just saw the ladies comment last night. Her and her brothers grew up in that house. It's too bad. I feel so sorry for them. I pity them they should put something in the damn so the breed don't pile up like this ever again and cause the water to cut a New path. That's what I'd be looking at. They got over 2,000 dams in the United States. They should start looking at these and see if they can do some before they fail like this one did. Thank you. May God bless to all the people there.
@jimw1615

The dam is still there, however. It hasn't budged and did not fail, and no water over-topped it. Debris stopped-up the water release gates, and the river found a new path around the dam and debris blocking its flow. That is what water does.
@paulstecker5693
@paulstecker5693 3 ай бұрын
@@jimw1615 My friend, don't you think they could put a concrete pole from one side of the river to the other side of the Mississippi with a steel gate? The water would flow through it and collect all these dead trees and this wouldn't happen again. This is what they should consider really in the future. I'm sure the army car engineers could come up with a plan to stop all this debris flowing and hitting in the damn and causing this. Again, I feel sorry for the people there. Maybe if all those dead trees were collected that wouldn't have happened on the side. I wish you all your people good luck there. Thank you. Too bad the house fell into the river where the lady grew up with a Brothers a long time ago. I heard they got a business next by where they bake and sell pies. I wish them good luck on that one. Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the response back.

Hi there, I'm a resident of this county. It's in southern MN, and it's Blue Earth County, the same as the name of the river. Should also note that the store...their livelihood, as it was referred to, is still standing...for now. The owners' childhood home between the cafe and the river is what we see collapsing into the raging water. Not to downplay the seriousness of that event, at all, but luckily, they had time to get many of their belongings and keepsakes out of the house. Hopefully they will not lose their business as well. It's a much-beloved local icon for people in the region to go for a Great burger, tasty sandwiches, and awesome pie, all served with a big helping of that famous "MN Nice" that you hear so much about. :)

I can't believe they don't take a helicopter and a claw and remove some of the blockage in the middle of the dam.... "Let's just stand around and watch..." Same thing when I almost died from a fever, just stand there... No, do something, "get ice". Same thing, DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING, you're not going to do anymore damage, you're PREVENTING more damage, send it where it's supposed to go. ZERO common sense with the people in charge......

@@rona4960 When it first started rerouting around the dam, they could have brought in large sand/earth bags and stopped it while an excavator grabbed and move the debris from the upstream side of the dam to the downstream side allowing the water to run through the gates like it was meant to. I have seen this done many times on levees along rivers and water ways down here. Stop the erosion by any means available!!!

OP, their business is the building shown at 1:00, I hate to say it, but it looks like water may still cut the bank back far enough to take it too. :(

The reason for the water level going down is the breach got so large. More water was able to move past the damn.
