House Finch - Another female sabotages nest

At 9 min 30 sec you can see the two females fighting over the nest. The new female ends up winning and evicting all the chicks from the nest. I believe most of the chicks survived since they were already close to fledging. They crash landed in the nearby bushes and tall grass. The previous parents continued feeding them for several days.
The new pair rebuilt the nest and are currently raising 7 chicks.

Cause she finally knew they should of left the nest days ago! Can’t you tell they have used this nest over and over between finch broods. That’s why it’s so full of shiet! And they don’t have to keep building a new one every time. It was her turn to lay her brood and this new mom was taken advantage of by her already big ass offspring who wouldn’t leave the nest! And inexperienced parents kept feeding them and they weren’t gonna leave having that good life just yet! So when this momma is like I can’t hold these eggs any longer y’all gotta go the hard way! She took care of it!

I've noticed this happen often with Finches. I will find chicks with bloody foreheads or a missing eye sometimes. They have feathers but aren't quite ready yet. It may be a territory thing too, as they constantly steal each other's nests.

There is also a widespread illness called House Finch eye disease, which is a bacterial infection that causes the bird's eyes to swell and crust over, and the bird may scratch at the affected eye(s).

@mikeg8447
@mikeg8447 2 жыл бұрын
Check out some blue tit nest videos, the chicks expel a little sack for their waste, and the parents will take it and sometimes consume or drop it out of the nest. Not all species of birds do this though. Seems really risky for these finch chicks to live like that but I suppose if they're still around they are fine with it.

I don't know. But if you notice, the babies seem to do a decent job of making sure they shit outside the nest and not inside it. If I had to make an absolute wild guess, this behavior is probably a natural selection one, where babies that did this particular behavior survived to mate and pass that along more so than babies that didn't. So perhaps the poop helps to mask their smell or dissuades predators to some degree.

We have a nest with 5 eggs from a pair of house finches in a hanging basket on our porch and we are so excited to see them hatch. I would be devastated if I saw this happen. Does it occur often, that you are aware of?
@kiwifoto

Yes the current female with 5 chicks is the one that removed the previous tenants with force. I believe the chicks all survived since they were close to fledging. They crash landed in the surrounding bushes of our yard and the parents continued to feed.

It was actually her turn to lay her eggs and these big ass chicks were setting up to live at home through college! They were almost the size of the parents and the parents kept feeding these large ass birds whom should of left the nest days ago!! She was a more experienced and mature finch and had to give the momma bird a beating teaching her that not because it’s your 1st brood are you going to baby them into adult hood. 12 to 15 days tops then on your way out of the nest! These birds were way pass their 15 day mark! I’m glad she taught them a lesson with a good plucking on their heads! Her intention was never to kill them even though she could have if she wanted too! And you could tell they were long ready to go because when she was head hair plucking and poking the 1st one, one of the other ones flew out the nest with no issue! It must of said “might as well leave before I get plucked and poked! It was good while it lasted, in bed all day getting fed watching the scenery.” And the last/4th one wanted to play dead or sick thinking it could stay in the nest even after everything! And the father was also begging her to let the last one stay!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ NO! NO she said and good for her!! Even baby birds can be pain in the ass!! Imagine how many have stayed over their time taking advantage of their 1st time mother! Glad these got a lesson and learned from it including the mother! 😊

Hmm. . . I guess that MIGHT have been what happened, too!... But I'm still wondering about the "WAY past their 15 day mark"... Though, as quickly as birds grow up & develop, they weren't more than one or two days PAST their "shoulda moved out, already" time-phase, were they?

my And why wouliit s d that happened? Those chicks were more than ready to fledge. In fact, they had passed their fledgling days and were overstaying. Can’t you tell how there’s crap all over the nest, more than 1 finch mom reuse this nest over and over. That other female knew they were past their stay.
