Did she let him be free? He kept coming back to eat, which means she left him depending on her for survival. If you want to help a wild bird live free, it’s not as easy as just feeding it. It has to learn how to survive by watching its mom and being fed the insects it will continue to eat. Not everything is instinct.

Different bird's eat different things. In the wild, baby bird's eat what their parents eat: worms, insects, seeds and so on. However, baby bird's can eat different types of food if bing cared for by someone other than their parents. For example, puppy food soaked in water until spongy works well. You can use a stick to collect the spongy puppy soft food to feed the baby 🐦...

When I was 12 years old I found a baby sparrow. It was featherless and had its eyes closed like this bird. Even though the adults in my life weren't convinced I could save the bird, they didn't intervene. My bird 'Tweety' was my project. This was long before the internet existed so I couldn't Google how to keep it alive. I had noticed that many birds would eat our dogs dry dog food so I decided that's what I would feed Tweety. I sat cross-legged on our patio and pound the dog food with a hammer, making a fine ground meal. I added water to it to make a paste and Tweety loved it! I kept him in my room in a cloth-lined Easter basket. He would tweet for food anytime I was around. He survived, and like this bird, the time came for him to leave the 'nest'. I had childlike disappointment when he flew away but made the adults very proud of my dedication and ingenuity. It was a very rewarding experience for a kid.

I had the same experience with a baby mockingbird I found in the middle of July in the middle of a hot street. I brought the baby home took care of him for about 4 weeks, I fed him finely smashed ham I made into a paste mixed with water and he loved it. After a fue days the little guy was ok to start eating mealworms. The little guy ate almost 1,000 mealworms before he finally left. He would come home at dusk, get a nice meal and go to sleep in his enclosure I built for him and wake up, get another meal of typically 17- 20 mealworms and fly around in the trees on my land and play in his bird bath until he got hungry again and then he would land on the front porch railing and start singing his I'm hungry song . I would walk outside and he (Oscer) would see me and just start talking up a storm and fly at me full blast and land on my finger, or he would land on my shoulder, get a meal and we would go for a walk together he would be on my finger or shoulder the entire walk. This wonderful encounter happened every day until he became a teenager and brought his girlfriend to see me a couple of times, It seemed like he wanted me to see that he has found someone and was happy and he needed to move on. Then he stopped coming to visit me. But many times I would walk outside and I could hear him saying hi to me with his and my special whistle talk we made together throughout his stay with me. That was a very special, pleasant and sad experience that I will never forget.

He grew into a beautiful adult Thrasher. One evening he heard birds of his own kind, l left him out, he flew away never to return. We were heartbroken but understood the need to be completely free. I raised a little finch like that, that fell out of the eaves of my office building, I too learned how to feed her and I named her Petey Peep. I kept her in a little plastic vented reptile container full of shredded paper and fed her every fifteen minutes. I took her with me all day at work and she stayed on my desk in a very large call center. She went to all my management meetings and everyone called me the bird whisperer. I got her plumped up and when she was ready to fly I let her go, she flew up into a tree and peeped for me but I had to let her go and I went to work, when I got home for lunch she was still in the same spot peeping for me, I tried to get her down but she was too high and I eventually gave up and sat on my balcony defeated. Then she flew out of the tree and landed right on my head where she liked to nest. I said you want to live with me don’t you, so I brought her inside and put her in a large cage. Every night I let her out and she would sit on my head and then fly and rest on the corner of a picture frame that had a painting I did of an angel sitting on the ground holding a dove on his finger, she slept there every night then flew back to her cage in the morning. I loved her so much and she truly loved me back, I had never felt such a love outside of a dog. She lived for about 7 years and one day I found her dead on the floor in the morning. I buried her in my garden and placed a little angel statue on top of her. That was a long life for a finch, and she made my heart shine.

If he is still alive, he's now in his mid-50s, and he could be my son (I have two daughters, 58 and 53). I would be so proud of such a son. A kid who can do that can do anything, and I hope he has had an awesome life and is now a dad himself! Kudos to that long-ago 9-year-old!

@@marilynrowland5197 It was an amazing feat wasn't it! Yes he is 54 now, however sadly he never had a mother like you who would see the beauty in what he had accomplished, as that small little boy. A childhood of emotional neglect and verbal and mental abuse has left its toll on the soul, this is why what he did touched my heart so profoundly, and I was inspired to write his story down. Imagine a boy full of sadness and confusion and a home full of dread being able to save a baby birds life! Just shows us the love that children have that can so easily be taken away. I did the same thing. That little bird touched my heart. The other ones were frozen and there was one I that I felt may have had life. After coupling him in my hands I saw life. I made a little bed for him and put a bean bag that I had for my neck in the microwave to keep him warm. I stayed up all night and by morning his beak was opening for food. At first I gave him water until I figured out what to feed him. I put him on a small stick to help his balance because I never purchased a cage. I also took him outside every day until he flew away. I think of that bird every spring. I named him Java Chirp. It was a true blessing.

That was beautiful of you. I'm sure you loved him very much, and in his way, he loves you too. His instincts for the outdoors, trees, and flying are hardwired in him, but you gave him a chance he'd otherwise would not have had. My mother did something similar when I was probably about 4 years old. We lived on the second story of an apartment, and she rescued a baby sparrow that had fallen from its nest but somehow survived. She kept it in a cage, and after having seen its mother fly frantically looking for it, she kept the window open, and the cage nearby on the kitchen counter near the window with the cage door open. I still remember how amazing it was. The mother would fly into the kitchen through the open kitchen window, and straight inside the cage to feed her nestling. She did this until the nestling one day left the cage, flew around the kitchen a bit, then followed his mother out the window. I remember my mom was a little sad as she had gotten attached to the nestling as well. But she was also happy that it went about its life. You're both very special people.❤❤❤
