This is certainly one of the more twisted episodes of Batman TAS, it shows that Poison Ivy really is mentally unhinged to a scary degree, almost on the same level as the Joker and Two-Face. Even when she could've lived a nice normal existance, her insane obsession with plants wouldn't let her settle for normal people. How fucked up is that? This is just a theory of mine but I think because she loved Harley so much she didn’t want to get her involved or violate her rights. I thought for sure she would come in the new Batman adventures. They kinda revisit this plant people plot a little bit in the later seasons only it’s something far more sinister.

@@stempest7218 Poison Ivy didn’t torturing children. In this episode Ivy, might have kidnapping Carlisle’s daughters for her own personal beneficial and easier fooled Batman. But at the end, she didn’t do it. Unlike Harley who didn't have any problems of helping Joker in torture Tim Drake (considering that he was just a kid) and making fun of that. In fact, if Joker asked to Harley of torturing children, she wouldn’t have problems on do it.
@stempest72182 жыл бұрын
@@monicaaboites5053 my point is joker made her that way if he didn't she would have been normal. The joker would beat harley, talk down to hear and never show her any affection unless she did what he wanted. One aspect of this series that I've come to appreciate in my adult years... the what-if factor of Bruce Wayne. Had his parents been alive, we would know Bruce as Dr. Wayne. As a medical doctor, I could see Jack Napier and Pamela Isley working as chemists for Wayne Enterprises. His attorney? Why, Harvey Dent, of course! I know that Alfred Pennyworth wouldn't be much of a father figure in this world, yet he would still be a valued member of the Wayne family. Deep down, I'd like to think that BTAS Bruce Wayne had a grudging respect for his adversaries. Even in THE WORRY MEN, he admits to being disappointed by Jervis Tetch for becoming a common thief.

Poison Ivy has always been one of the most terrifying enemies of Batman for me, not only because she's a killer and inhumanly cruel, but because she is impossibly beautiful and is able to win people over just by being her sexy self. She also is VERY good at appearing to be innocent and kind - unlike, say, Harley Quinn, who, like all clowns, can never avoid giving away that she's putting on an act (not when committing crimes, anyway). This episode managed to make her more terrifying still simply by turning her into a wife and mother. I really felt sympathy for the two kids before I found out they weren't human. If your mommy is a supervillain, it becomes impossible to trust ANYONE. But yes, I am able to feel sorry for Pamela at the end. Deep inside every psychopath, there HAS to be someone who just wants to lead a normal life and is desperate to get out. And Ivy proves this. She does have her good points: she genuinely cares about saving flowers and trees (and I think she's correct in thinking of them as being more vulnerable than humans), and (in the "regular" comics) she is one of the only people who's willing to look after Harley Quinn. Harley feels she can be completely honest with Pamela, such as when she shed tears over the Joker having manipulated her yet again and said, "Help me, Red. Help me..." I still have a few questions, though. If Pamela Isley from this point on was really just a clone, how did anyone not notice? Why didn't "she" degenerate into a pool of vegetable sludge like the others, and how did "she" explain "her" new appearance when "her" skin turned light green? And how was "she" able to continue to show empathy toward Harley despite not being human?

SPOILERS This is one of my favorite BTAS episodes, and I think it’s underrated by fans. The main twist-Pamela being the villain-isn’t hard to guess, but the smaller twist of the kids growing up to be the husband and then the monster took me by surprise. And Dini somehow figures out how to make Pamela seem so innocent that even the Pamela-as-villain twist comes across as a punch in the gut despite its obviousness. Maybe it’s just because I watched “WandaVision” recently, but the main twist here is pretty similar to “WandaVision,” isn’t it? “House & Garden” is more satisfying both narratively and emotionally, however.

The Ivy clone theory simply doesn't work due to three reasons: 1) All the other characters were also redesigned. 2) Those redesigns are also shown in flashbacks that precede the events of this series (ex: "Mad Love"). 3) A doppelganger is supposed to actually resemble the original person in order to fool everyone, including the World's Greatest Detective. I doubt that the makers of this show ever intended this to be Ivy's last appearance. And if a retcon happens in a non-animated medium years later, does that even count for most viewers? Especially since it would make the crossover between Ivy, Harley, & Livewire less significant if it's actually just the latter two characters.

I remember this episode airing in primetime instead of the usual after-school slot. I didn't realize back then that it was the season premier; that makes sense. In any case, this was definitely my favorite Poison Ivy episode; the part with the pod babies was one of the very few times Bats was genuinely unnerved by what he saw, the other times being the people turned into trees (another Poison Ivy episode...she was good for body horror), and the one with the child slaves in the sewer. As for the redesigned Ivy being another plant clone, I've heard that theory before and it's good to see it more-or-less confirmed.

I always wondered why they gave Ivy green skin in the 4th season. I just chalked it up to the sometimes drastic redesigns the other villains received, but it still didn't explain why she suddenly had the power to control plants like a metahuman when previously she had no superhuman abilities other than her immunity to poisons. Her plant-based abilities came more from genetically manipulating them than having actual powers to make them grow and attack at will. Now I know why she came off so different in the red-sky season. Honestly, that detail should have made it into the show proper at some point, but maybe the series was canceled before it could be addressed. It's still nice to finally learn that after all these years, though.

I feel like theres a lot of gay/lesbian interpretation that can be made in this episode, especially in relation to Ivy and Harley. Faked heterosexual relationships are very common among old gay media (often refered to as "beards") to keep suspicion away from the gay characters. When Ivy says "I wanted a marrige on my own terms" this could be connected to the illegalization of gay marrige at the time. And theres no coincidence that the person she fakes the relationship with was her doctor at Arkham, a direct parallel to Harley's origin. Almost as if he were a male stand in for her. Then at the end the final page of her scrapbook depicts her alone on her car, a picture of Harley, then her fake wedding. Seems like a lot of "coincidence" to me.

seeing who played that green monster I'm getting a vibe fusion of thanos, Nega-Duck and Cortes

This episode was really disturbing

Really nice work with that BTTF reference, LOL. As for the episode, after the kidnapping, I thought it was interesting to hear Bruce call Dick his 'ward.' We know that's who he is to him, but it's just a little weird to hear it said out loud (on a show not from the 60s.) Also, the pod babes is one of the most creepy BTAS moments! I think House & Garden is Poison Ivy's best episode of the whole series and it's in my Top 25. Their 'villain reformed' entries tend to be really strong, as we also saw with The Penguin and later, with characters like Harley and Riddler

Sounds like Wanda Maximoff with Visions kids. Both are warped in their ideas in wanting a family

im shocked it wasn't mentioned how messed up it is that Ivy's artificial children grow super fast, and before the take the form of her brutish protector, they take up the role of Ivy's husband......meaning Ivy was sleeping with essentially her children.....yikes

No, they were plant based mutations that were enhanced with the doctors DNA. There was a reason why he was kept alive. She never needed to sleep with the clones.

@@melindoranightsilver9298 I don't think the OP was talking about her sleeping with the clones to produce the children. I think the implication here is simply that Ivy might have been sleeping with whichever clone was playing her husband at the time. Remember, she didn't do this for some elaborate scheme or just a science experiment. She did it because she was lonely and wanted a family. Including a loving husband.
@melindoranightsilver92982 жыл бұрын
@@Wurzelknecht Even so, I doubt she slept with them. Of her "husband", Ivy comments, “He was useful for signing my release papers, and for providing certain raw materials for my experiments.” To Ivy, the sum of the male contribution to any offspring is measured in “certain raw materials”, a rather skewed and warped take on matrimony. Thst doesn't sound like someone she bothered to sleep with for connection. She wanted that life but her terms.

@@melindoranightsilver9298 The quotes you were using refer to the doctor she kidnapped. He was just a means to an end. I'm talking about the plant clone posing as her husband. Ivy didn't just want kids. She wanted a family. The whole package. When she cries at the end of the episode, she cries over a picture of the whole family, not just her "children". Is it so far fetched that Ivy also wanted to create a husband on her own terms?
@melindoranightsilver92982 жыл бұрын
@@Wurzelknecht Assuming that she wanted a husband in the first place. For her to get out of Arkham in the first place she would have needed to seduce the doctor which is her M.O. If she was really all about having a husband as well as the kids, then why not just use her plants to get him to do what she wanted like she usually does? She doesn't care about the men she seduces, they are all a means to an end. Either she needs them for something or she wants revenge on them. We don't even know if the plants were capable of sex but they most likely were not. I also don't think Poison Ivy is that sick to "raise a child" to then sleep with it when she pleases before it turns into a plant monster. They even mostly act like children. I think what she misses is the concept of a somewhat normal life that got taken from her when she gained powers. She wants a quiet and peaceful life but on HER terms. Also in the album was a picture of Harvey Dent & Bruce Wayne when Harvey announced the groundbreaking of the Stonegate Penitentiary, and a photo of the rosaceae vularis both from "Pretty Poison" and a headline & picture of their spree in "Harley & Ivy".

I loved the house & garden episode along with other poison ivy episodes pretty poison, eternal youth, and Harley & Ivy. It really showed a more sympathetic version poison ivy, how she tries to go legit and yearns for a family that she will never have due to her powers. Even Batman showed his own sympathy to the plant princess and even he wanted to believe she had gone straight and wasn't behind the crimes. Now I wil say that this episode has some horror elements that reminds me of the film 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' where even Batman is shocked by the turn of events.

This episode was definitely when the darkest and creepiest day ever did was amazing how how far things went in the 90s in the 2000s they tried their best but couldn't go too far because of post 9/11 and other stuff.
