I'm back at it again with another book review, today we are looking at book 5 of the House of Night series: Hunted. Is House of Night the most controversial set of vampire stories in YA fiction? idk.

For someone who’s supposedly a Mean Girl and named after a Greek goddess, Aphrodite is a damn saint. Not only has she had a whole character arc while no one else has, but she’s carrying the plot like that one friend in DnD who clearly was a military genius in a past life.

The whole treating Aphrodite like she’s a mean girl pariah is getting old, and it’s very annoying how the books just won’t allow her to have a character arc, ironically she has but the text doesn’t even acknowledge that she’s had this immense character growth and hasn’t behaved the same for like past 4 books atp, meanwhile the main four characters have stayed the same the whole time, and Aphrodite continues to suffer I hate it here

She lives with her mother and her people and routinely had to use a muddy paste to thicken her features and darken her complexion as well as dye her hair because according to her if the tribe found out she was mixed they would abandon her and her mother, despite the fact that her mother is essentially their absolutely necessary priestess. Their tribe has a sickness that means unless the people are “washed” in moonlight the women become essentially depressed and can literally do nothing but weep while the men turn into monsters who, ah, will assault any woman they can find. It’s very gross, and at one point after the mother dies the MC just sits in her cave and listens to all the men going around and assaulting women. This was published in 2016.

I’m not related to Kalona but I wish I was because he’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a fledgling vampire but I got all my markings expanded early. I have olive skin. I’m also the chosen of Nix, and I go to a vampire school the House of Night where I’m in the first year (I’m sixteen). I’m special (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly designer. I love boutiques and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a black dress with thin shoulder straps and expensive leather boots. I was wearing some makeup but not enough to look like that slut Aphrodite who paints it on. I was walking outside the House of Nights. It was nighttime so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of sluts stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them. (I don't actually know the things Zoey wears, forgive me. It says something that the girl who was literally introduced while in the process of sexually assaulting her boyfriend, who spent most of that book as a bully, is somehow - fucking somehow - the least objectionable character in this whole shitshow. The way the Casts write Kramisha is making me deeply, viscerally uncomfortable. Almost as uncomfortable as Damien and his child-husband, and the general air of “we love gay guys 🥰 ew, lesbos”. And it’s the least of their atrocities, but the whole “Dracula’s my favourite book! Regarding then end of your second paragraph, Zoey says in the first book that she can't stand homophobes; yet when Cunt 1 and Cunt 2 call Aphrodite "Aphrodikey", she doesn't bat an eye. So blatant homophobia towards lesbians is A-OK in the world according to the Cast duo?
@RainWelsh
@RainWelsh Жыл бұрын
@@mikeyjamieson4715 sadly it seems fairly common to find women who fetishise gay men, claim to fight homophobia because of that, but who’ll then also be openly disgusted with lesbianism. It just makes them homophobic twice over, imo, because they want gay guys to be allowed to kiss just so they can fap to it, you know? They don’t see them as people who have their own lives and deserve to be allowed to have normal (gay) relationships, they just see them as things to be gawked at. At least the type of men who watch lesbian porn but hate gay guys are, generally, more open about being homophobic across the board. These women try to act like they’re great allies or whatever, despite the fact they’re dehumanising and denigrating the gay men they so lust for as much as they are the lesbians they find gross

Have these characters/authors ever actually read Dracula, or did they just watch the Gary Oldman movie? He bites Mina, I think as a way of getting into her head and getting her to confess the protagonists' plans to him and/or out of spite. He then leaves her, ill and miserable and dying, whilst he high-tails it back to Transylvania. If anything, the Dracula in the book is cloer to the creature-esque Raven-mockers.

It's 100% the movies. In the book, LUCY is heavily indicated to be his love interest/bride who makes him turn his eyes from the concubines he previously kept, and he only goes on a rampage and revenge bites Mina after Lucy is murdered. Before Lucy is murdered, he was feeding to survive, but wasn't actively doing much else. He was being pretty chill for a monster character. But dead girls half way through the story don't make great narratives on screen, and there's purity culture that likes to push the more modest Mina who survives to Leading Lady status, plus they'd have to tackle the jealous former Lucy suitors who were also anti-eastern/non Catholic or protestant competition being her all too willing murderers- hence why we see the adaptations we do.

@@sophialambert2616also, there's literally the whole thing about Lucy being a pure brittish maiden who the scawy foreign monster kills. Lucy IS basically a perfect "pure girl" which is WHY its so sad™ when she dies(of course, it is sad if you're invested in the story and characters too, but you know what I mean, authorial intent and all that). Yes, she had several suitors, Because She's Just That Good, not because shes an Evil Seductress/femme fatale or whatever, and she felt really bad rejecting them NOT out of lust or whatever but because she has so much kindness and love in her heart. The fact that she becomes a vampire who feeds on others and is a predator in all those vampiric ways is very clearly her being twisted and corrupted as the commenter above me talked about.
@sophialambert2616
@sophialambert2616 Жыл бұрын
@@guggelguggel7491 I like Lucy as a character. But authorial intent does not agree with you about her being "pure", and people have written entire theses arguing that point. Lucy was far more flirtatious than Mina, wanted to make a harem of her suitors, Stoker mentions her "voluptuous" body and other sexually appealing characteristics, etc. I don't see those qualities for Lucy as a bad thing, and maybe you don't either, but repressed, misogynistic, Victorian-era Stoker was setting her up to be the perfect target for Dracula, not the perfectly pure lady. Her sweet traits were to help make it tragic, because his audience back then wouldn't feel bad for a complete harlot. But the "pure" one is supposed to be Mina, and that's part of why she survives.

Nice to see you still putting your sanity on the line due to this series. Honestly, why does this series even HAVE vampires if they can't drink blood and most of the solutions to problems are "Use Magic"? The longer this goes on the less I understand why every character has to be a vampire.

They wanted Wiccan vampires but it ended up being more Wiccan but vampires were popular back then so idk if the vampires were an afterthought and the series was originally supposed to be about witches, a la Harry Potter.
@kirathecat
@kirathecat Жыл бұрын
@@marisanicole5116 It definitely feels like the vampire thing was an afterthought mostly due to Twilight's rise in popularity. The vampirism thing, as far as I'm concerned, has like 5% of a bearing on the plot and that seems to only remind the reader that fledglings drinking blood causes imprinting and that red fledglings are a thing. Vampire Academy, while it has its issues as well, does this entire premise sans the Wiccan stuff way better.

The thing that always pissed me off about the magic system is that it requires like absolutely no effort. They don’t really have to learn how to control their powers, there’s no downside to having the powers and they barely even have to make an effort to use them. They literally just say “fire, burn it!” and that’s it. We could have had them being benders like in Avatar, but no, that’s too much effort.
@marisanicole5116
@marisanicole5116 Жыл бұрын
@TheCowgirlBookworm , I laughed when Alizee said it's like ATLA. It's more like Captain Planet and the Planeteers (Heart is replaced w/ Spirit). Zoey's powers doesn't work w/o her friends so they might as well had given them rings as the Planeteers needed little effort to use them as well and at the end of each episode, the conflict is solved by "forming a circle" and empowering Captain Planet.

Wealth, fame, power. Zoey Redbird, the queen of the vampires, attained this and everything else a B-list Greek god had to offer. And her ancient Cherokee words drove countless teenage souls to the bookstores. “You want my p@ssy? You can have it! I’m definitely not a sl@t by the way”. These words lured two bad writers to the Bottom Line in pursuit of unearned success greater than most authors dare to imagine! This is the time known as the Not-So-Great Vampire Era!

Long comment ahead, for those who cannot be arsed: LET'S GO ALIZEE 4+ YEARS SOBER! STILL PROUD OF YOU EVEN IF WE DO NOT KNOW ONE ANOTHER! I AM STILL ROOTING FOR YOU, YOU ARE STRONG! 🎉 Bad stuff first: Blatant rape apologism has made it into the book series. Give Becca some damn therapy paid by the HoN. Give Stark the death he deserves - a slow & painful one. Zoë having now 5 or 6 boyfriends is too much of a time management issue now it has become unrealistic Finally some good f---ing food: incidentally they keep making Aphrodite more & more interesting to me. I keep wondering now that she isn't a vampy anymore, what type of supernatural being she is now: is she a Seeer like Ethan from MBAV, more of a Sorcercer stripped off powers but still with visions or just someone with visions? Also her relationship with Stevie Rae reads as sapphic to me: You have 2 beings that are outsiders - Undead dead Undead being & Disgraced by God ex-Vampy - being eachother's Imprint. That outsider thing is what we WLW feel too at a lot of times

I made the mistake of reading through eight of the ten books in a single day because of just how unimpressive things were, that remembering things wasn't important. It hurt my soul immensely, seeing the ignorance, both intentional and not, as well as all the slut shaming and self-importance from Zoey. Even more than that though, Nyx's lack of any action while Neferet was pretending to be her was infuriating, since she's a God and should keep folks in line if they start threatening those she claims to love. Anyway, feel for you getting through the remainder of the series as well. :(

44:40 I love that Zoe has this whole monologue about Dracula but gets the plot of Dracula wrong. Dracula doesn’t love Mina in the book, that’s just in film adaptations. In the book he has no redeeming qualities and goes around attacking people in their sleep, including Mina. She very much does not consent when he bites her. Mina does have a love interest, her husband Jonathan Harker, with whom she goes on a journey to kill Dracula.

Having read these books at 14ish, I don't blame my teenage self for not realising all the toxic shit - I didn't really know better back then. Not realising the messed up timeline, I blame on reading these with up to a year between books as I waited for them to come out. But I swear to god the translators of the German edition (which were the ones I read) must have put in herculean effort because I swear it at least felt decently written in German... Anyways… As far as teenage favourites to realise as terrible as an adult go, House of Night really sets a high bar on the terrible side… I do wonder though… I distinctly remember the books getting progressively worse plot wise starting from book… 8, I think? Like, if you think this is bullshit plot, it just gets completely unhinged after 9 or so... How much worse is it going to be through the clarity of hindsight & an adult brain? XD I'm definitely looking forward to it!

44:37 this shit pisses me off because its not even accurate to the actual book, I dont even think Mina and Dracula interact at all and if anything, he and Jonathan at the castle have more romantic tension and he even tells him "I too can love" at some point and Dracula is arguably the most human when Jonathan is describing him while he comes across more like a monster or a disease in the rest of the book once hes actually in england, so if they wanted to make this point they shouldve used Jonathan but that would require these jokers to stop being homophobic and heternormative for one second

This serious could’ve been so much better if it was written from Aphrodite’s perspective. She has more depth than all of Zoe’s shitty, one dimensional friends put together and her story is genuinely interesting: high school mean girl vampire with premonitions is punished unjustly by her goddess and turned into a human. During her punishment, she has to help the worst people ever save the world in order to redeem herself in the eyes of the goddess that disowned her. Idk about anyone else, but that sounds way more compelling than an unlikeable NLOG character that gets everything handed to her just because she was ✨born special✨
