That's a theory quite repeated in the fandom. In the book it's even more probable because at that point Harwin had a broken collarbone (courtesy of Cole, he didn't take the break up well) and I can't imagine anyone jumping on a mattress with a broken collarbone.

Really impressed with what they did logistically with this episode with the huge jump, new actors etc. The only issue I had was the death of Leana - not the death itself, that scene with Vhagar I liked a lot, but the set up was stupid, jarringly for such a great show. However, for me it also had the absolute best scene so far, the whole monologue of Larys over the montage at the end. Every frame was just unbelievable story telling. I can get over ten Leana's deaths for that one scene, it just catapulted Larys into stratosphere of playing the Game. And from here on I'm starting to feel that this show is going to remain good, knowing what happens in the book and that the worst logistical obstacles are now overcome and from here on we are basically in our real time. Yeah, there'll be another time jump, but that one will be very easy to pull off. Very impressive what they've managed to do with this material, definitely elevating it quite a bit.

@@theproofistrivial7677 it's tough when you know the source material, cause I knew from the start that she is a very minor character, like she got far more time on the show than in the book. But they did such a good job with her, she stood out, she was outspoken and brave and cheeky, and a decent person, and beautiful on top of that, and as a result I totally agree - I wanted more of her, even though I knew there really is no space. I do feel that one more episode between 5 and 6 would have been great. But I do understand why they are rushing. Give us directors cuts, dammit.

Folks, Laena’s burning is done purely for one reason: to show her making her own decision as a contrast to Aemma in the first episode. The messaging is the priority in the scene and logistics/justification are not even an afterthought, hence the scene not making sense

@@ju9604 I think you may have misunderstood my original comment. I actually agree that this scene wasn't set up well. It was one of the main problems I had with the episode. I feel the scene played out the way it did simply because the writers wanted to show a parrallel between Viserys wife and Laena. It was all about the "message" they were trying to push and they didn't care about the steps they took to get there. The scene suffered because all they cared about was showing Laena making a decision for herself that Viserys wife didn't get to make(that's not theorizing, it's just obvious IMO). It seemed sort of lazy and rushed to me. Like the original poster said, they weren't concerned about making it make sense. There are a handful of social justice/feminist messages and themes sprinkled throughout the show. I'm just kind of surprised that Gary and Mauler aren't picking up on some of the "messaging" the show is pushing, especially in this episode. That is what I meant about them not getting the "messaging" in the show. Even though I think some of these themes are clearly present within the show, it hasn't been enough to make me dislike it yet. I just really didn't like this scene lol
@Mahalleinir
@Mahalleinir 2 жыл бұрын
@@com21h8tr agreed. I will add that some of this “messaging” is present in Fire and Blood of course but it is handled with much more sophistication and doesn’t take a 2x4 to the readers’ face, and is worked nicely into the narrative without feeling out of place. Not so much the case here and I am also surprised many people are bot picking up on this stuff in the show.

I mean, even in the books it's obvious they couldn't be Laenor's children. With two valyrian looking parents, the children came looking like "normal" people, brown hair and brown eyes. However, considering Daemon's children with Laena, it's even more glaring, indeed. I'm just realizing that Viserys saying that the baby has his father's [Laenor's] nose might be a jokey reference to the book, where another feature of Rhaenyra's children is their plugish (?) nose, so unlike Laenor's long aquilline one.

For some reason I found it really important to see Rhaenyra smile for a moment when looking at her newborn child. She really was in need of some redeeming qualities after the last few episodes, and we can see she finally does care about someone other than herself. And it also showed that motherhood can be a good positive thing, which is something this show so far has been way too negative about so far in my opinion.

I had the opposite reaction regarding the show’s message on motherhood. We had a forced cesarean that ended the life of King Visery’s first wife, which ultimately was done in vain since the baby also died. We also had Laena commit suicide by dragon fire because she couldn’t give birth to a baby. So part of the message I got was “don’t get pregnant because you will either be held down against your will and sliced open and die or you might become so distraught for failing to give birth that you commit suicide.” Not a ringing endorsement for motherhood in my opinion.

One line I didn't really like in this episode, was when Rhaenyra and Laenor were arguing after Laenor named their child, and says in his defence "He's my child too, you know." and she just goes "And yet I'm the only one bleeding." As if to imply that women have more of a claim to children just because they suffer more. To be clear, the dad naming their kid without even consulting the mom is a dick move in any scenario, but that's not a justification for what she says.

@@reasonablyserious I’ve argued this with TLM baiters and ROP stans too. Knowing religion can be really helpful here. In Reformed theology, there is the concept of the regulative principle and normative principle. Regulative: if it doesn’t explicitly say we can, we won’t. Normative: if it doesn’t explicitly say we can’t, we will. Fwiw Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu were killed because they did not worship in exactly the way God told them to. That would seem to nix the normative principle. Also the RP allows things which “by good and necessary consequence may be deduced (as the Presbyterians say)” or is “necessarily contained” (as the baptists say) within the original meaning. People have debated this for hundreds of years, and fans of fiction can benefit from it. When maintaining the message of an author, a regulative approach that does not introduce elements which are not in the original is the only right approach On that note, it’s important to know the difference between elements and circumstances. An element is something explicit that can’t be changed without being an editorial action. A circumstance is something that is not explicit but is essential in order for the elements to be presented. For example in worship, gathering together is an element, but whether it’s indoors, outdoors, on chairs, on pews, on the floor, etc are examples of circumstances. You have to pick one but which you pick is not specified in the original material. In ROP for example, they editorialized by time jumping Muriel to before the rings are forged. A circumstance (also sometimes called “accidents”) would be the LOTR decision to depict the elves with pointy ears. You have to see their ears on screen unlike in the book, but afaik Tolkien didn’t specify their appearance, so the decision is a circumstance. Still needs to be rationally justified, but artistic license in the depiction would not inherently be a violation of the source material. So, if the people he belongs to are all described as white, this change is a change of the story ELEMENTS, not merely its circumstances

Opinion so far in the season from a writer’s (published author) perspective- This seems like a show that they wrote for people who are already familiar with the books. So many questions… Will they be answered or are we left to assume? For instance: 1. I don’t care about who was casted first. The adults should at least RESEMBLE the children they once were. 2. What the heck happened at the wedding to cause the fight? Are we to assume that he was mad over the blackmail? What was the king told caused it? 3. What happened with her begging Daemon to be with her as they embraced in front of her father right before the fight? That seemed pretty poignant but now that we’ve fast forwarded 10 years, it’s now seeming more that the writers just wanted a shocking moment. Many more questions follow this including what caused her to fall, be separated from Daemon, where did he go, etc. A lot of loose ends with this show seemingly. 4. There’s 2 birth scenes in this episode. Was that really necessary? I understand Alicent’s portrayal, because it was the eventual cause of her death, but it seemed they just threw Rhaenyra’s in there for shock value. 5. What happened to Daemon’s old girlfriend? 6. They made it a point to portray the king as a ‘soon to be dead’ man in the earlier episodes, only to find out that he’s alive 10 years later and perfectly coherent albeit ill. Whenever he dies, that’s the episode that he should have been made to look sick in. It felt like the writer’s were preparing for him to die but then got told to wait a few episodes and forgot to move the scenes around. 7. It’s very difficult to do a time jump properly if there are multiple moving parts i.e. subplots. I understand what they were trying to do. It’s a 10 episode season and episode 5 was the midpoint/twist. They wanted episode 6, leading up to the climax in the latter episodes to be about the kids grown up. It just seemed like we either didn’t get enough time with the cast as children or got to much leaving the transition to adulthood feeling a bit rushed. Maybe if they gave a quick resolution in the beginning of this episode, showing them as children in the aftermath of the wedding and THEN begin their journey as adults, it would have felt more natural. Finally, I know that many of you have the answers to these questions due to having read the book, etc. Despite this, the producers and writers should have made it clear to the people who haven’t read it and are essentially coming in cold. As for what I like about the show so far, I’m not quite sure yet but I’m willing to finish the season at least to find out.

Love how into the tiny small details Mauler is. I caught a lot of the same details he spoke of and it’s nice to see writers have a true sense of appreciation for showing as much of the context as possible in detail without over explaining things. Shows real respect for the viewer So many good scenes especially Larys’s monologue. Just really well done writing choices.

About the Laena death scene. I assumed that episode 1 with Aemma's birth set a precedent that they cannot just cut up a baby and save the mother that way. Either the baby comes out by itself or the mother dies. So the only choice one makes when the baby does not come out on it's own is whether to do something to save the baby. The mother dies no matter what. That is why Laena was sure she is a gonner and decided to end it all. It is true that it might be "selfish" to take the unborn child with her to death, but they did suggest the child has a slim chance of survival - again, a precedent set in episode 1. So I thought the whole scene to be very logical and in terms with the rules they have established.

Never once, in 10 years, Alicent, Rhaenyra and Visery did not discuss it ? "Alicent: Our child, Aegon is in danger. He's the first born son of the king..." Something like that. And then see what Rhaenyra and Viserys say about Alicent's worries.

I really disliked the actor switches. I mean it's just 10 years, there is not really a point in switching actors except for childactors. And if you have to, pic two actors that are somewhat lookalike. Just look what they did with Rhaenyra and Alicent.

Milly is 22 but could pass for 15. Many viewers find her scene with criston creepy because even though her character is supposed to be 18/19, everyone still thinks she’s 15. Rhaenyra is supposed to be in her 30s or older for the bulk of this show. I just don’t see how Milly could pull off a 30 year old, especially as she’s supposed to become middle aged by the end.

Beat a guy to death at a wedding: No problem from paramour or anyone else. Beat a guy unconscious after he openly insults you: Obviously his insults must be true, lose your rank and get kicked out. Also, isn't the literal heir to the throne a prince and thus pulling the non-heir off him his literal fucking job?

I'm not bothered at all by Laena's decision, if the baby cannot come out the mother dies, if the maester cuts the womb to pull the baby out, at that era they don't know how to close it properly and stop the hemorrhage, not to mention the problem of the lack of sterility... so in this case she also dies, plus the pain is unbearable and the chances of survival for the baby are still very slim . So I get why she would quickly decide to commit suicide in this condition. But the way it's shown, how she goes to the beach in this supposedly short time, wasn't great, the showrunners should have come with a reason for Laena to be left alone for a few minutes

If she was in labor too long and the baby wouldnt cone out, it would die. The placenta becomes unattached by contraction's. The only way they could get it out would be to cut her open and she would die. You can't remove a full term baby any other way than C-section. If it stays in, she dies. Either way she knew she was doomed, that's why she chose her own death by her dragon that she loved, instead of dying a slow and agonizing death.

remember from the original game of throne show where just hair colour was enough for Ned to question if Baratheon's sons are his. Think this ep was very on the nose on the same idea than being maybe she did maybe she didn't. The latter would have been more satisfying story telling, and the courtyard fighting would been a satisfying confirmation of it.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t JUST the hair colour, as Ned didn’t put it together for a while. It was only after realising that every single one of Robert’s children had the trademark Baratheon blue eyes and black hair EXCEPT for Cersei’s children that Jon Arryn and Stannis put the pieces together and then Ned after them. If Robert was capable of keeping it in his pants, everyone would have shrugged their shoulders and said they just took after their mother.
