House of the Dragon...was this a good season?

Daemon's switch to Rhaenyra's side was off for me, like the pacing was off with him. I'll have to rewatch it, I did watch the finale in a bad mood

I felt like we knew Daemon's character already. Bad boy who will put himself and family first. I also thought at the end of the first season that he was okay with being King concert so long as there is Targaryen was on the throne. During the first season I never got that he was jealous of his brother, just seems like he was missing out on something that was part of the family business basically.

The show didn't make it clear what Daemon got out of his vision. It kind of leaned too hard on everyone having seen GoT already but even then it wasn't clear how it factored back to him.

The studio forced the showrunners to cut out two episode to save money. That is the real crime. Considering this and the writers strike it is a miracle that this this season still turned out to be good.

I would've liked more Aegon and I loved this season. but I don't see how more episodes would've improved this season. Nothing felt rushed. I'd like to think that with more budget we would've seen Daemon do more interesting things at Harrenhal but that's a budget per episode problem, not a number of episodes problem.

@@Nimrawid What's positive about assassinating a character? what's positive about destroying the nuance of the conflict between the Blacks and the Greens in favor of making a compelling character like Rhaenyra from the books into a bland character edging on being a saint. The finale wasting time on a character like Rhaena whose only motivation is "I want a dragon". Excellent character writing for that. Daemon, the rouge prince one of the grayest characters that GRRM wrote made into... whatever this is.

@@khaalmalki4039 I'm under impression that not everyone shares your opinion. With Rhaenyra I felt they lost a plot a little bit and didn't know what to do. Still a lot of people around me enjoy this character most. Different strokes I guess.

People these days seem to forget that good storytelling relies on world- and character building and not only on spectacle. That's how we end up with stuff like Rings of Power or some of the Star Wars series. If you don't explore the motives and background for your characters, they remain as empty shells that nobody cares about. Showrunners or writers rush from one big scene to the next, leaving the characters and their motives and the world as a whole completely underdeveloped. Same with GoT S7+8... Benioff and Weiss did not understand what made Game of Thrones so interesting in the first place, and even turned down offers to make more Episodes or Seasons in favor of rushing to the finale, leaving behind dozens of loose ends and completely ruining the arcs of important characters like, Bran, Varys and of course Daenerys.

Had similar observation with my GF after finishing the season. Definitely good television but the pacing was uneven a little bit. My GF who didn't read the books felt the ending was a bit unsatisfying. I think given the upcoming events and few events before the end of season, the split between S2 and S3 was a hard choice. I guess this was the best moment to split them. I won't discuss spoiler stuff :P

Yeah totally in a story like this you just have to pick the lesser of two evils. Because if you don’t do it this way you can either rush important character arcs or make one long season. Which honestly i’d be down. But that probably would’ve taken 3 years to make the season.

@@NerdyRambling Anything is better than last seasons of GoT xD In this case I'm afraid of the Hobbit situation. They delayed the fight with Smaug until the third movie and the whole plot line dwindled like a wet fart.

People are soooo negative about this season. I agree, season 1 was better. But they were dealing with a lot this season between the writers' strike and HBO slashing their episode count by two episodes. They did really well considering all of that.
