Cheaper and faster.I use your method to mask off walls that I have just painted when about to spray the ceiling. saves putting up 9x400 first then following up with 9" paper 1" tape. Tried every method in the book. This is the method I ended up going with. One thing I’ve never seen any one else do is mask the window trim along the edge with 2 to 3” tape to protect it from over spray. Pull the tape but leave the plastic on the window to trim it out. Good ol Toliver Painting. To each their own.

If you're cutting in/brushing the trim after, there's really no need to tape perfectly along the window vinyl frame since any overspray on the trim will be covered when you brush in the trim color. Unless the trim/body is the same color then I guess you could do it this way to save some time.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 2 жыл бұрын
The masking works for both purposes of spraying the main color (twice) and rolling or brushing trim twice. If we taped to the face of the rough trim, it's less secure, and we'd have to unmask windows in order to trim. We keep the vinyl, screens, and glass covered because of how much trim there is above and its not worth getting a drip on the screens.

As I'm looking through KZbin for tips to help with painting my house, I found this video very helpful and informative. I don't have all the fancy tools, but these tips prove invaluable for keeping the budget down and getting the job done. I do have a question though; the body color I am using on the hardi-plank siding is a brown which is a fairly dark Autumn color and the trim a light antique white. I am using a simple sprayer from the box store. I would like the Brown to come up the edge of the trim to eliminate cutting in on the edge side when I move to painting the trim. I'd like to use a 4'' roller to cover the face of the trim with the white, but I am concerned with such a light color over a dark color. Do you have any suggestions that might be helpful? Thank you!!! I really appreciate your helpful video. :)
@XCPainter
@XCPainter Жыл бұрын
There are a few ways to increase trim paint coverage.. scuffing and dusting the oversprayed trim can improve that 1st trim coverage. Using a block brush like a 3" Block or Oval to lay the paint on. If roller application is the finish of choice then use a thick enough roller cover to leave good wet millage behind. Two nice coats should cover, with an even application, and good performing paint.

Hopefully you are working with others who will show you the ropes. Be appreciative for opportunities, surpass expectations. It's not about the money it's about being able to do good work. Hopefully you have others who'll train you along side them. Wear your whites, decent shoes, bring your essential grip and necessities if traveling out with a crew (water, lunch. Sunscreen etc). You'll most likely want to get a respirator if someone doesn't supply one for you. Just know that you'll learn to do methods, or routines, but they can change based on a situation or job scope etc.

How do u compare a 3m plastic masker and your method?
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 6 жыл бұрын
The 3M plastic made for the masker is four or five times more expensive. If you use plastic that fits the regular windows it won't fit the bigger windows or sliding glass doors, so you have to either have two different sizes or use all 99 inch, which is even more expensive. The plastic on the masker is little more delicate when you're carrying the masker around and ripping it. I don't really need to have two or three maskers with me as I'm going around the house so I just stick with one with size paper and a roll of plastic and tape. The 3M masking film made for the hand masker won't save me any time and reality and it's not worth paying $10-$12 for 90 ft of it.
@kenmcf
@kenmcf 7 жыл бұрын
What about hand maskers with the film roll....this is more economical...or you think its better.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 7 жыл бұрын
k m Masking film on the masking machine is just preference to use it or not. The masking film is way more expensive than regular painters plastic and it means another masking setup to carry around. I find it simpler to skip using the 3m film.
@kenmcf
@kenmcf 7 жыл бұрын
definitely...I have two maskers and am tired of them dropping off the ladder to the ground, or the plastic not tearing fully.
@XCPainter
@XCPainter 7 жыл бұрын
k m I hear ya. I'm not totally opposed to the 3m film and could use more practice with it to be honest. I would cost a bunch to stock it and have different lengths too. But if I had a boss who made me use it then I'd just try it more.

Tape left, tape right, tape bottom, use 48 in 3M masking film with hand masker, run it across the top of the window, fold down, attach to left and right while pulling down, fold remaining plastic mask under and tuck into bottom film. Takes 3 minutes at most from ground level or off an extension ladder in 25MPH winds. Only use 48 in 3M. 72 and 99 are too difficult to tear and there is too much waste. Painters plastic out of the box is a joke. How much time did it take to pull it out of the box, measure it if you did, unwrap it and do your cut, tuck, roll under, fold over method. You can make about 2 k a week using the aforementioned method I described just taping windows. Been there done that and just trying to help you out. 20ft up in the air in 25MPH winds makes one think a lot. Not easy Bro. Respects from one painter to another and I am happy to pass along a self learned method in which I never learned from 3M.

@XCPainter
@XCPainter 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. We are masking over various types of openings including sliding glass glass doors, medium windows, big windows you can't always get from 1 ladder position. It takes different size films, wouldn't want to use the 99" (or 72") on everything, etc. This method is solid over screens or anything and very easy to unmask in one piece. Also most of the windows we cover are inset about 1 1/2" with a 1/4" edge or so. So when you unfold the plastic downwards to tape it, it'll push inwards requiring several rows of tape to bridge the difference.

The Handi masker m3000 and 3m Advance film is a fine method if it works for you. I do my method so I don't have to worry about having the appropriate size plastics for small, medium, and large windows or sliding glass doors. This method is very feasible when high up on a ladder on windy days, and works easy for large windows. The tape I used is very secure and pulls down very easily in one piece. I own 4 or 5 hand maskers and I only use 1 with masking paper, very simple stuff.
