➡ Since making this video, my opinion has changed on a lot of things, and I'm now using biological pest control as opposed to chemical treatments. Although the methods in this video work, they can actually set your plant up for health issues over time. I go through all of this (and a more natural approach to pest control) in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6DIcpSeiNh7p7s

I use Substral sticks for treating thrips. They are really a miracle! I had problem with thrips for years and I tried all the spraying several times a week. you just push the sticks into the soil and plant suck up this substance and later on when the thrips eat the leaves they die. The only downside I can find is that these sticks also contain plant nutrients so you cannot use them during the winter

Best way that worked for me when dealing with fungus gnats was to put layer of perlite on top of the soil to prevent them from laying eggs. Worked a miracle, only issue is that this method gets monitoring soil and it’s moisture a bit difficult.
@anonymousofficial9266
@anonymousofficial9266 11 ай бұрын
I use grit on top of the soil because it’s harder for the gnats to get through to the soil and it also stops root rot

Just lift up the pot. That's best way anyway and check if there's issues shown or time to change soil.

When reporting due to pests, instead of disposing of soil I usually bake it at a really high temperature (obviously keep a close eye on it) for about 30 mins about 3-4 times to kill anything in the soil so that I can reuse it again, I do everything on a budget lol so can't afford to just throw away loads of soil ❤ hope this helps someone P.S when I say close eye, I literally sit infront of the oven, as my soil mixes have bark and sphagnum moss in them so can catch fire lol 😅

@dana102083 I usually flush my soil with water quite frequently so I don't really suffer with a high salt build up as such I normally bottom water but once a month or every couple of months I just sit my plants in the shower under the shower head for about 30-40 mins and that seems to do the trick 💜 Hope this helps :)

In my personal experience, Neem is practically useless for insects and mites. To mix the spray, you are advised to add some dish soap to homogenize oil and water. Guess what, using just dish soap spray kills bugs without exception and within seconds - no overpriced Neem products needed. If you drain insects in neem, they die as well, but another way to kill insects is with oily aerosols that are small enough to enter their breathing organs, basically just smothering them. But for this task, any oil is doing the job, so you can pick one that does not stink that much, like jojoba. And you need a good sprayer that creates really small aerosoles. Most household sprayers don‘t. So for professionals, buying a good atomizer and mix their own source for treatment is ok, but as a normal person, you can go with leafshine spray. Kills insects and mites through their breathing organs. And as spidermites are not insects, they wont be included in all systemics for insects. But Acetamprid does the job for both. For mildew oil spray again is just fine. To treat root mealies, a 5 to 10 minute bath in 0,1% to 0,3% (yes, the additional 0 is critical here) Hydrogenperoxide should do the job when combined with Acetamprid, as with H2O2 alone, some eggs might not be hit. They are covered in a waxy shell so one would need to add dish soap to cut the water tension, but you do not want this in the substrate. Products like Careo Concentrate contain a root friendly homogenizer, hence why you can water your plants with it. Adding it to the H2O2 bath saves you some time. H2O2 when watering adds more O2 to the root system and is really OK for your plants. Just do not buy one that is stabilized, because they stabilize it with acids of phosphorus. So the pH is too low for longer baths with H2O2. Unstabilized H2O2 on the other hand is not that easy to handle but more root friendly. I accidentally used cheap Hydrogenperoxide in a slightly too high concentration for an overnight bath of some plants, with unpleasant results. But they all survived 😆 ✌️ thanks for the video! Oh and change your systemic every year to prevent immunization.

do you know how to get rid off springtails ? i found them in my banana plant and lemon tree pots... ( both grown indoor and both are too huge to give them a bath.. ) thanks :)
@_hazplants
@_hazplants 2 жыл бұрын
@@scotthood4789 I regard springtails as beneficial creatures and recommend to let them live. They won't harm your plants unless their population explodes in the same moment, there is no other decaying material left. Most people would be quite happy to have springtails around, as they keep things clean and eat stuff that otherwise would serve as a hotbed for mold. To get rid of them, put your plant in a larger container, about an inch higher than it's pot, and this into a second, even larger container. Then flood the inner container with water (room temperature!) until the plants pot is under the water line. Wait half an hour. By that time, all springtails should gather themselves on the water surface. Gently add more water until it overflows the inner container, flushing the springtails into the outer container. Now, you should let all excess water drain out of the plants substrate. If it is not well draining, you can place the pot onto an old towel. This will suck out the warer much faster than your plant could take it up, so your plant won’t get root rot. If your plants substrate is old and was never flushed, instead of waiting only for about half an hour, you can let the plant sit in the water over night. Most nutrient buildup will dissolve this way. Be sure to flush the substrate several times, if it is really old. Springtails love humid places. Changing your warering regime might help to keep them under control in the future.

I respectfully disagree with hydrogen peroxide being the best treatment for fungus gnat larvae. I have found that mosquito dunks work far better! I break a dunk into roughly 8 pieces (depending on the size of the watering can), put it in a mesh bag or tea infuser (depending on the size of the dunk chunk), and place in my watering can. For this to be effective the first use, the dunk has to soak for at least a few hours. I let it sit for roughly 24 hours, then water any plants that need watering. For plants that require distilled water, same process just use distilled water. In conjhu

Does your Neem oil state that it is cold pressed with Azadirachtin in it? If not, that is why it isn't working. Or you could possibly be using the wrong Neem oil ratio. Because when used correctly, Neem works quite well.

Invest in a pocket microscope. Preferably one that can connect to your cell phone camera via USB. They are fairly cheap for the purposes that you intend it for. I got a fairly decent one from Amazon for under 30 to 40 bucks. The pocket microscope will help you to catch any infestations at the earliest of stages. I tried to take a look at each plant at least once a week, if possible. If you can get to an infestation at the earliest stage, your chances of eradicating these pesky bugs increases.

Just do your research. And learn what they each look like, in all their growth stages. If you see something new, research it before treating it. And very important, if you are using sprays that could cause harm to the pollinators, make sure that you are only spraying in the evening when the beneficial bugs have gone for the night. We have to protect our honeybees and butterflies!

I've heard, from word of mouth so take it with a grain of salt, that in can be a species specific relationship, when talking about predatory insects. For example, it may be that the predatory mites that you're purchasing don't prey on the specific species of spider mite that you're fighting. I'm told that to really get a clear answer on which species you have, and which predatory species you need, takes an entomologist. You could probably send an email to your nearest university entomology professor, with high resolution pictures (might want to check the internet for tips on what features you should be capturing), and get some guidance.

Hi Claire! Just to let you know that neem oil is really really dangerous to your health if inhaled or ingested, and is actually banned in the uk. Don't know how it's ok to still sell and buy, but it's really bad for your health and also the environment, which is sort of counter intuitive 😬 I didn't realise until recently either x

Hey! Do you have any references? I tried to search the harm of neem oil and couldn’t find anything.

That's crazy - I had no idea! I wonder how it's still so easily accessible here. Will do some digging, thank you for making me aware 💚

I've such a trouble getting my hands on these pest treatments! I can't get mosquito bits. I can buy hydrogen peroxide in very small bottles (1 dl for 5-8 euros) and neem oil! Wtf is this?! My country obviously thinks that let all pests live🤨🙄 I can of course order online but the prices seem ridiculous. I checked the mosquito bits big jar and it would cost 35 pounds + 45 pounds shipping. 1 liter of hydrogen peroxide around 15 euros. I think I just choose to co-exist with the fungus gnats for now... I bought earlier some BTI tablets and they were 11 euros for 10 tablets and you're supposed to use those every three days. Very expensive.

@noora7773 sprinkle Diamotaceous Earth, food grade, on top of your soil, it gets rid of gnats quickly. Retreat after watering as it only works when dry. DE is mostly silica so it’s good for plants.

Very similar treatment to mealybugs - rubbing alcohol and systemic pesticides (the tougher mature ones sometimes need to be manually scratched off the plant) 💚
