So the lands he own doesn’t have a huge enough t tax base to maintain that place. Only tullys collect taxes from everyone in the river lands. It’s so undesirable that it says a lot that a rich man never swooped in and tried to marry a daughter of the house and claim the lands and titles. That says alot😂.

It’s so expensive to run this place after ageon burnt it, rendering some of it unusable, every lord who followed occupied less and less of the castle and it’s still too much to operate it. I would have liked to see how harren the black would have coped with it. It’s a pity it got destroyed the day he finished it so we don’t know if it would have bankrupted him. But they were known for Piracy therefore, they could loot and extort wealth from the free cities to keep it financed. But the other lords who followed after all they could do is tax the folks under their banners staying on their land. They can’t pull hire tax receivables like the tullys so I can see how it would bankrupt somebody. True it’s better for defense and for Dothraki invasions. They can’t storm it or fling anything at it like fire over the walls.

He was older, because he was married and had two male heirs, plus one of those two heirs was married and had given Lord Quenton his first grandchild, which was Gargon. They got Harrenhall and bad luck. Both of Quentons heirs died and it was Gargon who succeeded him. He was then termed Gargon the Guest for demanding the right of first right, showing up at all of the weddings. He also used his servants and their wives and daughters. It was a servant angry about his daughter that opened the gates of the castle. And as he had no legitimate heirs the line ended with him. Every house that rules Harrenhall eventually goes extinct.

Lysene just have a Valyrian look, but no proven dragon riders. It us not specified that Quenton was himself a dragonseed, and considering his position at court it is unlikely. But it is likely that he decended from one who had later proven usuful to his Lord Brother/Cousin/Uncle. That said First said was practiced by many, most without relations to Dragonstone so I would put Gargon's behavior on the account of his ancestry...

It should be noted that the right of the first night did not only apply to weddings among the smallfolk. A lord could also claim that right to bed the bride of any lesser nobles or knights who swore fealty to him, although that was not done as often as such persons tended to be rich and powerful enough to cause issues if they complained.

Cole being from Dornish Marches, being ethnically Dornish, and fighting for Stormlands would make sense historically. We sort of project how we see the world onto the past. Nationalities now are pretty meaningless in early modern and medieval times. For example Im from a border region in England (literally where the wall is) and here bordermen whether on English or Scottish side of the marches fought for either side when it suited them. But most likely the writers though Dornish Marches just meant Dorne 😂
