House running off 1000W inverter

Eliminator 1000W pure sine wave running half my house, about 500W load for 2 hours, batteries came back up to 12.6 volts after I stoped the test, the Eliminator inverter held up well, had a oscilloscope running while i was testing and the sine wave was good.

Great stuff and this shows what you can do with very little equipment. I started like this now I use a 3kw pure sine wave inverter with a small bank 700ah of motorhome batteries. This will happily run the house for 3 days without charge but I have 14 80w panels which give around 80a of charge so when the sun does appear the batteries charge pretty quickly. I also use grid tie inverters because in the winter we only get 4 hours of usable daylight and worse if it's overcast as well. Keep up the good work.

This should only be replicated with CAUTION. This video helped me power my whole house in an emergency yesterday. It was -10 degrees celsius and we lost power around 11:30pm. I was mostly running the furnace, lights and fridge. Important things to note are: 1.) Main breaker MUST be turned off. 2.) Turn off all 240v breaker. 3.) The suicide cord must not have a ground/ground pin because there is already a ground on the main panel. 4.) Inverter must be turned off and suicide cord unplugged before turning on Main breaker after power is restored. I am planning to get a proper transfer switch.

Very cool. I once had 2 deep cycle batteries and an inverter with a battery charger built in in my room under my desk. So when there was power, the inverter was trickle charging batteries. When the power goes out, the inverter starts producing power. That way my room had power during power outages :) I plan to build something similar in my new home, with solar panels for battery charging so that I use the grid even less.

There is a big difference between the amps coming out of your batteries and the ones coming out of the inverter. amps x volts = watts. 3.54A x 110v = 390W 32.2A (dc) x 12.1v = 390W There will always be a big difference between the Amps your inverter is pulling and the amount of Amps it is putting out. It is converting the high amp low voltage DC to 110v lower amperage AC. (Still equaling the same amount of watts though) Don't forget that your inverter isn't 100% efficient either so there will be about a 10% loss there as well. You can save a small amount of power by running as many things off of DC12 as you possibly can (like a DC to DC converter for your laptop) This saves power because you aren't converting it from 12v DC to 110v AC then back down to a lower voltage DC for the laptop to use. I understand your battery bank is small so it pays to save a few milliamps here and there.

True. I, however, have to point out that the laptop or electronics in general might not be the best example. The big inverter and a modern laptop ac power brick may(and often will) have a better total efficiency than some generic or budget dc-dc converters. As a related fact, some laptops can be directly connected to 12 V DC without an external dc-dc converter. Some can do this because that is the normal working condition; their power bricks supply about that voltage. Some just tolerate a lower than specified input voltage. In the latter case this practice may again, theoretically, worsen the total efficiency compared to using the whole chain of battery, inverter and power brick, and might also prove unsafe or unreliable.

Nice setup! I have a cobra 4k inverter and i used it to power my 120VAC welder. I bought mine for 100 bucks and mostly use it to show off but the dual batteries in my truck run most everything just fine. Inverters are a handy tool to have!

Great video! Here's an idea about your garage door. Add a backup battery to it. Over the years my area loses power about 2 or 3 times a year mostly during storms. Which means I have to manually open and close the door. No big deal but it's time consuming and gets nasty during very wet or snowy conditions. So I replaced my old Sears garage door opener with a Chamberlain which has a backup battery feature. Other brands also have such a feature plus control over the internet using a smart phone app too. During a week of terrible storms in July 3 years ago we had two major power outages in mid Michigan. We lost power for a total of 6 days. I was able to open and close the door over 20 times and I never ran the battery dry before the power was restored.

We got a few big ass leisure battery's we use with a 2000w inverter when we have power cuts here, it's better than using the old petrol generator, quiet for one, powers the house lights which are led and a TV and the appliances until the grid comes back on.

I looked at all the invertors on the market for backup, and settled for a 9KW with wireless remote starting. Generator outputs 120V/240V that powers both sides of the breaker panel, bringing everything in the entire home to life. Costing less than $1k; there are no battery banks. Runs about 11 hours on one fueling. Invertors draw heavy DC current. 4 cans of gas = 4 days and nights of powering everything in your home. Great for ice storms. During a ice storm in Virginia several years ago on Christmas day, I completely powered up my mother's home. We had a regular Christmas dinner that holiday and all the relatives came over. Generator in the back yard I connected to her breaker panel powered all the lighting, the oil burner for heat, a fridge, freezer and her electric range. Every 11 hours I shut it down and poured in 4 gallons of fuel, and restarted it. Yes it was noisy, but well worth it. A comment someone made below about 48V is a good idea; the closer the DC voltage to the invertor is to 120V, the more efficient the invertor will be. If you had a invertor that could operate on 150VDC, you wouldn't need a transformer in the invertor. A 1000W invertor will pull approximately 100A from the battery bank when running at full load, not including invertor efficiency losses. Forget about starting most AC motors with it; many motors running on 120V can have inrush currents of 2x to 4x their running current rating which can trip a breaker in the invertor (if it has one.) Garage door openers also have this problem - note that you didn't see him lower the garage door during the video. Invertors are best a running lighting and very light electronic loads. But when the batteries die, they die! Trying to charge invertor batteries from a vehicle while the invertor load is running is a risky proposition - connecting your battery and alternator to such a heavy load could create a spike that could destroy the alternator. Now you'll be out about $500 and be sitting in the dark, with a vehicle that won't charge it's own battery and may not start.

Awesome. I would like to build one. I was considering using a generator transfer switch that can be wired into the house breakers. Apparently these can switch on selected circuits ...fridge, furnace, etc. Inverter feeds into the transfer switch. Have something like a Guest marine battery charger and a solar panel with charge controller to keep the batteries charged. UNPLUG the battery charger when using the inverter so it doesn't drag the battery down.

I just can't help thinking that you could wire up 12 volt emergency LED lighting for inside the house and in the garage having those batteries sitting around. You could have a small 120 volt relay energized when you have utility power, then use the contacts that close on loss of power and feed the 12 volt + leg thru the contacts. Fuse everything with automotive fuses, run bulk extension cord cable thru the attic to a fixture in the main part of the house. Put one of those 30 LED array stick on panels inside your light fixture. Then your family will never stumble in the dark during an emergency. It comes on automatically. Current draw is next to nothing and 14 gauge extension cord has your positive, negative and ground neatly inside. Cheap, too. I would also like to remind you that a clean garage is the sign of a sick mind!

Could you tell me if you have grounded your inverter, most fridges require a ground connection for the electronic board, does your fridge sound different when running on inverter then when it is plugged into house power, you have a good basic back up system, just be careful with the back feeding make sure you have turned the main breaker off.

Main breaker was always off, the inverter was never grounded because I was connected to the house witch in grounded, never double ground a house, also the back feeding in this video is unsafe and should not be copied.

IF U build this setup and have it on the lights in the rooms and the fridge and freezer - it will run them separated from the mains grid -off the electric bill - and will keep them up and running when there's a power outage. U can combo charge from trickle charge from power line and solar every day. Lights are off all day so it will only have to work for the refrigerator and freezer - and they are only a few amps each if you obtain them with that in mind.

Nice video - i want to ask a question that if we convert DC to AC and then run this AC in a long long wire with no problem to a distant place (as this is an AC so it will run easily with no resistance) and after reaching that place IF we need to convert that AC again in DC to feed a DC ceiling fan , then what will be the energy loss ( roughly , how many percent ? ) thanks .

I had Asimilar set up. Marine batteries, only 10 watts solar , but mixed in camping gear, 40 qt. Cooler(4 amp hr) propane stove,20 lb. Tank 750watt inverter,wood stove. I suggest a larger car / truck alternator 400 amps or more to charge batteries , maby an isolator.

Assuming lead acid batteries... they dead. Lol. 12.0 is as low as you'd ever want to take them. You may wanna conserve energy better, or larger battery bank, or some other means of charging them. Winter time, they'll freeze. Still neat to see someone else run a house off a small inverter.

Am sure you are far past this by now. Am not sure what your use case is but a 3-4kw would be good if you are wanting to run the whole house. The problem I saw in this experiment was the batteries. It's not generally a good idea to mix battery types, age and sizes in a practical exercise. In either case, you have a backup system that should keep you going if the power goes out. May not be complete but something is far much better than nothing. Have a good night/day mate and thanks for the posting.

about 10 hours with out doing much damage to your battery or 15 hours or so and shortening the life of your battery.

I'm assuming you mean a capacity of 100 Ah, not 100 A which is current. That would not make sense. Assuming this, your battery has about 1200 Wh of energy. A lead-acid battery cannot (must not) be completely discharged. Depending on the exact battery type, you might be able to drain down to, for example, 50%. This is 600 Watt-hours of usable capacity from the primary side or the battery side. Assuming a good 83%, or, say, (5/6) total efficiency, you can run 40 watts for 12 hours, if a discharge depth of 50% is permissible. Which is pretty much the same as fliping720 is saying. However, if you are using an automobile battery, I would not want to discharge that much. 8 hours sounds better. After 18 hours you're down to the last quarter - even in the best case scenario - and your battery has suffered significant damage. If we're less than lucky, the battery will go completely dead before the 18-hour mark, causing even more damage. It might be ruined. Also, your generic Chinese 1000 watt inverter might even have way less than 83% efficiency(remember, total efficiency, also counting cable and connector losses) when running a load of merely 40 watts. Swiched-mode power supplies typically are very efficient under typical load, less so when close to maximum or peak load, and even worse when running a very small fraction of available power. There is even an "idle power" they consume when there is NO output load. 8-10 hours would be the maximum reasonable time. This is of course assuming the battery is dedicated to this task. Car starter batteries should preferably not be used this way at all.

hi, yes you can buy one big battery, i have 7 big batteries now if you watch some of my newer videos you will see them, and no do not use a car or truck battery unless you just have it kicking around and have no other use for it,it will not last long at all.

You can back feed both sides of the panel as long as you turn ALL 220 breakers OFF at the panel first and during the entire time. This assumes the main is also OFF. The result would be 110v to both sides of the breaker panel with 0v potential between the two where there would normally be 220v. That's why you need to turn off all 220v breakers in addition to the main.

The inconsistency of amperage reading from your plug-in unit and clamp meter are because they are reading different things. The clamp meter is reading the amps 12v going to the inverter from batteries and the plug-in unit is what the house is drawing from the inverter 120v side.

+fliping720 While house wiring can be a bit *cough* inventive at times, I don't see how you could get a 200' run-length from central power to the furthest LED in a normal house unless it was done in a basket weave. A proper DC system would be something like USB, where segments would current-limit themselves and report up the network when too many lights were on. More complex, but on the plus side, it would be easy to take that system off-grid while worrying about the old school heavy AC loads separately.

I calculated you've got 167 Ah, right? I like the idea of the capacitor, but it is necessary? Capacitors are used in DC systems where multilple devices draw from a battery or power bank. You've just got the one inverter drawing 1000w. Does the draw off the power bank vary drastically?

Mike Boyd make sure your inverter is twice the wattage of your fridge. say your fridge is 300watts, then it's best to have a 1200watt to make sure you can use other things in the house and your fridge will work still. and make sure your inverter is a pure sine wave model. not modified. that will work with your fridge. good luck

This is a great Video. I have the Energizer 2000-Watt 12-Volt Power Inverter-EN2000 and i was wondering if i could somehow use this to power my small house just the way you did yours. I know the Inverter is mainly used In Trucks, Boats etc. The question is what do you think i will need to use the inverter to power the house. I already have 2 battery (12v 200ah). Also note i am presently in a country that uses 220V power output but i know the Inverter output is 110v. Does that mean i need a Step up transformer that will convert 110v to 220v output? Also do i need to buy a battery charger that will charge the battery when it goes down? I know the Inverter doesnt have a built in charger. Please a quick summary of the things needed will be greatly appreciated.

in this vide I was only able to go off grid for 3 hours, 200Ah is fine if your only using lights but if you wanna run more then just lights you will need at least 800Ah and 2000W of solar to keep a small house up and running, also I would buy a new inverter that puts out 220v your energiser inverter will not like a step up transformer very much, there will be a lot of wasted power there.

Can a grid tie inverter run with the main breaker open, disconnecting my house from the grid, essentially back feeding? or would that signal it a grid down to the inverter and it would stop operation (To protect line workers in case of a grid down situation) ? just wondering if that was an option or if I would need to back feed with a regular inverter.

+policedylan You'd need to find a hybrid system i think. Some systems of grid-tied are only built for it cause the panels used are higher voltage. Systems like this. (off-grid and buy/make your own system.) are more only 12volt/24/36/48volt power panels. So it's mainly12 DC converting to 110 AC VIA the inverter only.

+Raptorduder Dylan -- Raptor is correct. For more tech (and not a lot of $$$) check out the specs on an automatic transfer switch. If you lose the external power (whether it's coming from power grid or solar/wind turbine/generator), it will automatically switch over the power source and -- more importantly -- provide the correct connections for your ground and neutral circuits.

+policedylan Grid-tie only works with a current thats already applied. If you was to cut the power to ur house the grid-tie is dead in the water. It takes and senses the grids already formed waves and offsets it to use current from the grid-tie first.

May have a problem when the refrigerator goes into auto defrost mode (every 24 hours). When that happens the refrigerator may draw upwards of 750-1000 watts.

Thank you for this presentation and all the info! I want to convert my SUV into a camper and I plan to use 2 x 12 volts batteries of 800 amp with 79 amp/hour and a power inverter of 1500 watts. I will be using a coffe percolator of 750 w and a toaster of 700 w. I was told that I have to make sure I have the right inverter cause some produice "Pure Sine Waves" and others "Modified Waves" and this may affect the apparatus I will be using such as the percolator or the toaster... what do you say? if you are using anything that has a screen on it use pure sine if it just a plain toaster then a modified sine wave is fine.

Warning!!!!!! While this video shows what can be accomplished, there are a number of very potentially dangerous conditions created by the techniques used to put the power back into the homes electrical system...!!!!!! The Dead-mans cord or Suicide Cord... the means of attaching the wires coming out of the inverter into a standard circuit breaker... The fact that if you don't turn off the main breaker, you could kill a power authority worker by back feeding the main power lines coming to the home... The concept is sound, but, invest in a proper generator panel that will disconnect the power from the mains (this protects your backup system from being fried as well) and use certified connection boxes and breaker panels... Again, excellent demonstration of what a simple backup power system can do, just be sure to follow the best wiring practices to protect your home and family and use the right materials... They aren't very expensive and are available at most big box retailers these days...

I'm an electrical contractor and just spoke with a couple of homeowners a week or so ago and they thought it would be absolutely fine to back feed the house... No understanding of the fact that if electricity can come down from the pole, it can go back up to the pole as well... That is why a proper generator panel is needed... so that if the power is converted over to the generator, it is automatically separated front the power company... +Ninja 87 some 1000w inverters will run a fridge and others will not, depends on how good it is, I only have half my house hooded up to the inverter, and the cap is to half small battery banks stark up heavy loads.

It doesn't work. Add a 12 volt battery on the DC side and it may run for a short time, but the whole assembly would lose power at a slightly greater rate then sheds heat.

I'm not really sure what kind of setup you are suggesting. "Split resistor", "laptop cord"? What exactly is a "laptop cord" in this scenario? The combination of a separate power cord and a external power supply (with a fixed cable running to the laptop) is not a "cord". Where would a resistor go, and what kind of a resistor? Split resistor as in linear regulation, where voltage is lowered by using the remaining fraction for heat? Some kind of a free energy trick or perpetual motion machine? No, that does not work. Free energy tricks never work. Period. You can, however, run a 12 volt to AC inverter from a laptop power supply, if its voltage is around 10-15 volts, and the inverter is not being driven hard, and this does not involve a laptop at all. Just the power supply. I don't know why one would want to do this. As an improvised means to run low powered 110 volt devices with a 110 volt inverter without batteries when in a 230 volt location, or vice versa? Yes, that will somewhat "work" if done correctly. Marginally usable anyways.

your inverter can run at about 8.3 to 9 amps on its output. the beaker should be no more than 10 amps if you want it to really do anything. (i would just use a fuse) and you need a live line switcher.. im not sure if thats the name but its a mechanical switch that you install by your power box. it changes from grid input to your inverter input with a throw of an arm. it makes it impossible to back feed anything and makes everything safe. have one installed

got a little 750 inverter I bought for 40 dollars we use it in the rv for watching movies on the lap top and running a small fan for the kids because the ac does not work unless were plugged in at the camp ground but it kicks off if I put to much draw on it my friend told me it kicks because I plug it into the lighter plug. will it run more items if I hook it directly to the battery under the hood

Yes it will run much more if you do, and use thicker cables, the lighter plug can only supply 150watts max if you plug directly into the battery you will get the hole 750 watts out of your inverter.

think ill just buy a new bigger invertor for my next project we are going to put a dj set up into a mini van that will consist of a entire dj set up like I use to do a wedding reception with a pair of peavey 15,s it should really pound considering one of our dj set ups puts out up to about 3000 watts and we are going to logo the van up real good and cruise it around town as a stunt to drum up more business for our dj company here in missouri.SO ILL JUST WIRE THAT LITTLE 750 WATT INVERTER up to the battery in the rv and it should run the refridgerator as well.WE already have 12 volt lighting while we go down the road just no 120 volt

That was my whole point. Sure, you could hook up a system to handle the electric hogs, I:E your heat/air unit, but that would call for a large 220 system that will cost you twice what a 120 system would cost you. And running just all your lights, tv, sound system, computer, etc. wouldn't really save you allot of money after paying for all the energy hogs your house is still tied to the grid for. To run your whole house as if you were on the grid, you would need a system that puts out over 20K watts of power. I don't know about you, but that is a pretty damn penny right there.

Right. But I was talking about using your whole house as though you were tied to the grid. meaning you got your stove cooking(I have electric), using your washer & dryer, having your heat or a/c going, while the kids are using the TV's, game systems,etc. To do all that all day and night long takes ALLOT of power. Not to mention enough batteries to store enough of this power to use it for more than 5 hours a day.....lol
