I also used to live in an old wooden apartment (could hear everything like you, even the downstairs neighbours talking at a normal volume), and my downstairs neighbours were also very inconsiderate, unreasonable, and loud (singing at the top of his lungs from 1am-4am almost every night in the bedroom right under mines.. who knows what he did for work) like yours, so I can totally relate. They drove me insane and the stress even made my hair fall out. I just moved recently to a new condo with nice neighbours and I feel like I'm in heaven haha. Good for you for getting out of there!

this same thing happened to me when i moved into my new apartment (started my first job as a dentist). it was horribly infested with roaches and a ton of other things broken. I was paying $1500 per month for a 1 bedroom and it was basically crap. sticky floors-it never got cleaned after the previous tenant left and i haven't even begun to tell the issues. when we reported this to the front desk they didn't care. i moved my stuff back to my parents place in a week and told the office i wont be paying for any "lease breaking fees". i asked for all my money back (i had already paid close to $2000 plus moving expenses). they are working on getting me my money back. i refused to live there and pay that much for it!
