A London home that is a chinoiserie wonderland | Design Notes: Hannah Cecil Gurney of De Gournay

The English company de Gournay is revered for producing hand-made wallpapers and furnishings using fantastically complex and painstaking artisanal techniques; from reproducing hand-painted chinoiserie from virtually any period, to working with artists to produce contemporary designs using gilding, beadwork and embroidery. Hannah Cecil Gurney, whose father Claud founded the company in 1980s, grew up immersed in this world of pattern and beauty. She is now their global head of marketing and development, so it is little surprise that her London home, which she shares with her husband and children, has become the testing ground for the pieces she helps to develop.

Exactly my thoughts!!! I don’t think I’ve ever been more enchanted and amazed by a home before. I love every single room, the purple is absolutely magnificent, the children’s rooms, her bedroom. The wallpapers and fabrics are everything. Just gorgeous.

What bothers me is that so many young, trend loving designers have no idea of the range of design possibilities that opens up once you stop selling things "of the moment" and start imagining rooms that have the potential to evolve, reflecting varied histories. Whether rooms be minimal or not, texture and patina simply brings character into a room. Charm comes from the "heart" of space.

Salivating!!!! Your taste is impeccable! “Proof I’m not a designer!” I don’t know many who could pull that off! I love everything! I grew up with chinoiserie in my grandmother’s home. I wish we had removed the panels to reuse! Alas, I have the most beautiful dining room walls after showing my two daughters the work of the house of De Gournay! The second time I have watched this....that flamingo wallpaper in the bath....the orange in the bedroom and Georges underwater world.....its all sublime! And I have never LIKED wallpaper, until seeing this. I am a fiend for Chinoiserie as was my mother. I have all her wonderful Chinoiserie needlework pillows she designed and made over many years in Australia and Surrey England. Most are piled,on my giant gold leaf custom made locally canopy bed in Antigua, Guatemala.....I wanted an English paper look but paper cannot work in this near 100% humidity tropical mountain climate, so I stenciled it in a blue and white Chinoserie design, ordering the stencils from England. I painted the cedar wall of closet doors pale yellow with my own handpainted orchid designs copying orchids in my tropical garden...here I sit in my grand canopy bed...a touch of England looking out over my view of my rose garden and fountains below and straight in front of me volcan Aqua looms up to the sky. Paradise.

I adore De Gourney but its so expensive one needs a home where one is able to settle forever, as its like covering walls in Gold. Haha yes, this is what I'd expect a home to look like from the makers of de Gournay wallpaper. It's the priciest wallcovering out there but of its your families business you can showcase every design at home. A bit much for me, but who doesn't love a lovely handpainted chinoiserie room? I really liked the customized underwater themed room with the rug and curtain fabric, very dreamy and soothing yet playful and unique. 😍

OMG! this is how I've always loved rooms. I hate the trend that's been around for at least 20 years or so it seems where everyone wants gray, white and black. I'm an artist and the thought of that color scheme makes me ill. We were wanting to rebuild, and this style has been in my head for ages, we can't afford to do this level, but I can do the artwork and reupholstering and sculpting wood carving, rug hooking, sewing and needlepoint. My grandfather and father were old time plasterer's and did things like sculpted cove moldings etc. anyway I learned a lot from them, and my mother was a very good artist and she passed it on so hope so much to be able to make my dream home and you really inspired me. Thank you so much you made my day.
