Or do a metal roof. Done. No shingle repairs every wind storm.

In northern regions where gutters get ice dams it's better to put your eave flashing on top of your ice and water shield membrane.
@HouseImprovements Жыл бұрын
That makes no sense to me my friend? With the flashing over the membrane at the eaves the ice backs the water up under the shingles and then the water runs down between the shingles and membrane and then out under the flashing, dripping from the fascia?
@HaroldKellock Жыл бұрын
@@HouseImprovements Thank you for your reply. Water will wick up under the flashing and will find raw wood plus it can drip into the soffits. You can find good explanations of this about this at both the Fine Homebuilding and Journal of Light Construction websites.

@HaroldKellock They also say leave a slight gap between the drip edge and the facia to prevent this
@HaroldKellock Жыл бұрын
A slight gap will wick even more water than a tight seal. A minimum capillary break has to be at least 3/8 inch.@@snakeplisken4119

Never heard it called eave flashing, just drip edge.
@HouseImprovements2 жыл бұрын
Its all commonly referred to as drip edge, but it is needed on eaves and rake (gable) edges.

Any tips for adding drip edge to existing roof? Kind of tough to get that ice and water shield peeled back.
@HouseImprovements Жыл бұрын
almost impossible to get under the membrane after its been stuck down. Its hard enough to manipulate the shingles usually but if you can you could install the drip edge and then a small strip of new membrane 2' to 4" wide stuck to the drip and to the other membrane.

@@HouseImprovements I just got done doing that! Definitely a tough job. Thanks for a great channel 👍👍

Does tar paper goes under the flashing?

Tar paper under the gable flashing but over the eave flashing

It doesn't matter if you put your drip edge on first or after the paper on the eves! If your tar paper is keeping your roor dry under your shingles you have problems.

Its you last layer of defence, why give water the easy way to the wood?
@Spookytooth922 жыл бұрын
I never double starter in the same spot like that, seems it would flatten out the shingle more at the edge where you want run off. Just but up the rake and bottom starter.....which may not be best But you know what is best????.....1inch strip of tar at the edge to glue down started all over. I seen that done on roofs and after high end storms they were fine and the ones next to it lost strips of shingles because the starter wasn't tard down

Sure, you prolly don't even have to snap a line, do ya?
@Watthead802 жыл бұрын
With architectural shake shingles, most don't. 3 tab you still need to, but these are rarely used.
@jeffreymckinery46272 жыл бұрын
@@Watthead80 naw you still start with a line 1/4" shingle termination past drip...one line but non less
