Thank you for sharing this. It's been 43 years since I've done a roof on a cabin. I'm attempting to replace shingles on my shed, but the pitch is pretty bad for a 62 year old with artificial joints, but the roofer from Church was quoting way too high so I needed a lesson in doing all of it. Hopefully, I can get my busy son to help me. I like that removal tool. When I succeed I will save $2500 and have a ladder and tool I can still sell before we move and rent this house out.

If you can get under the tar paper you can work from the top side and let gravity help move the shingles down the roof as you progress down the roof.

I tried all kinds of “shingle shovels” and I always came back to my old t handle spade shovel. If you have laid shingles before it helps you understand where the nails are and how to tear them off. If they are on plywood and not crumbling you can remove them quickly without leaving any nails or debris behind. Old board decking is another animal, steep roofs are easier to clean as you go.

The concept, as I understand it, is that one asks the favour of friends to help during the project. The treats such as beer and/or pizza would be consumed during the completion of the task, or having reached a certain stage of the project that would warrant a "break" period.
@manictiger

@@arctichare8185 I usually just pay them. I find it very rude and wicked to ask for someone to spend hours of their time without getting paid. I'm a businessman, not a slaver. Another Excellent video, Shannon! Thanks for sharing and producing this video. I have an A-Frame roof with a 60 degree angle (off the horizontal) to tear off. The sub-roof is 1/2" OSB. Because of the 60 deg pitch, I'll have to use Roof Jacks as I work my way up the roof. Also, I expect the shingles will just slide off the roof by themselves once I've torn them off with the roofing shovel, so I'm just going to place an old pool cover on the ground to collect the torn shingles, nails, and other debris. Actually, I'm sure they'll get hung up on the 2x8 boards on my roof jacks. Any other suggestions on how to tear off a 30yr shingle from an A-Frame would be most appreciated. Thx!

Safest way is to hire a licensed roofer, just ask a few actual construction workers, not contractors, who they would recommend. That's the safest. Anybody that ask for payment before completion instantly remove from options, people who do the job before they receive payment always do better work and have more pride because they believe their work will speak for itself when time to collect. But you can do yourself, just make sure Jack's are nailed in rafter so they don't pull out, and when you nail on make sure when you nail shingles over them the break don't fall where Jack's were. When your done just lift shingle drive nails down, tar over nailheads and nail shingle down. To be really safe you can buy harness and harness off but hell, who doesn't wanna live on the edge a little. Enjoy 😗

Hey Shannon, I just wanted to say thank you for putting together these great DYI roofing series! I had a quick question for you, would you recommend stripping the shingles off and leaving the roof bare under tarp for a few days in between if you have the spare time? Or would you recommend just waiting for a patch of cloudy/sunny days to do it all at once? Thanks again Shannon!
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
You can tarp it up , but be sure your tarps are well secured incase a wind or storm comes up. I normally would strip one side and then shingle that side leaving the rest of the home covered up. Or you can even strip off as much as you think you can do on a side , install the new shingles to that point and strip some more again to keep going. Either way you want to have some tarps available incase a storm comes up.

I can certainly see this is strenuous work, but for the roofing industry to charge what is often four to five times the material cost for removing and installing a new roof (especially for a 6/12 roof on a square house) is a bit absurd. Or equally absurd that an able bodied person would pay for this. Not to mention the fear of paying people and the job not getting done right or short cuts being taken. I'll use a harness and get on my own roof.....though I am anticipating possibly 2-3 days of struggle on my small 600 sf roof, and dread any deck/substrate issues, however I think it will also be rewarding beyond the financial aspect....kind of like changing the oil yourself for your car, reclaiming your "man card".

Agree. Been getting quotes for my roof lately and decided to do it myself due to the costs being so insane. I priced the materials and its maybe 2k and thats me without a contractor discount etc and im getting quotes for 8-12k to have it done.

You have obviously never taken a roof off the heat and the nails and so much other shit idgaf if it’s 3x more then the material cost I kill my self 12 hours a day on the roof I’m doing
@ldlink3935
@ldlink3935 2 жыл бұрын
@@babytronjr2178 Yeah, I can see it is definitely strenuous work. My roof is small, maybe 5 or 6 squares, not very steep of a slope, and since I don't have to keep a schedule for anyone but myself, I can choose a stretch of cooler days to get it done (yes, I am aware some heat/sun is needed to get the shingles to properly bond/stick, so I will do it well before fall). And yes, you may "kill" yourself 12 hours a day on the roof, you are certainly getting compensated well for it and you have to keep a schedule to get it done....prices charged are definitely understandable for buildings with steep roofs, many angles and flashing, large roofs, high roofs, middle of summer or when demand for roofers is high. None of this applies to me and I am an able bodied person not afraid to climb my two story house. Also, 3X material cost I'd might actually consider paying someone to do it...where I live prices seem to be at least 5X material costs. Sorry if I came across like roofers are ripping people off, it is more that if you have a small roof, and a tight budget, you might want to consider doing it yourself. Lastly, I have actually seen "professionals" in videos on youtube installing shingles improperly, most notably taking the 5 or 6 inches off the LEADING edge of the shingle when they start a new row as opposed to the rake side of the shingle.....sure that doesn't matter for three tab shingles, but it does for architectural shingles. I'm not paying 3X -- 5X to have the job done wrong or sloppy, no thanks.

HAY? I loved your instructions - watched a few vids of yours.. Need a simple advice... as a general matter.. We have some shingles carried away by STRONG WINDS! @HouseImprovements

patching will be fine ,you may find though that you can not get a perfect match most times so if that is an issue for you then you may want to do the entire thing. From run to run at the factory they can be slightly different in shade/color

There is too many critics that don't seem to realize that this is for the DIYers and not a full time production crew. I started from the bottom so that I could shingle then seal it up between the old and new on rain days. The scaffold is a great idea, I set the boards at three levels to make getting up and down so much easier than a ladder and it made getting the bundles up there much safer.

@@imnotgood15aka.notgood21 See I'm not a roofer, I'm a tree worker, having spent 15+ years removing and deadwooding sometimes huge, like 120X100ft oak trees. Years spent working within feet of 4000-40,000volt hydro lines. Sometimes I would bend a branch down into the line to hear it sizzle like bacon. But I'm older now and I'm going to do things the easy safe way and it only takes 10 minutes to set up a scaffold with wheels that I can move along the eaves. Being a climber/trimmer I can easily climb up and down the boards. There's really no rush. A safe good job is priority. Yes I have respect for roofers. They have to deal with extreme heat and cold and heights. It is one of the most difficult jobs. Cheers.
@imnotgood15aka.notgood21
@imnotgood15aka.notgood21 4 жыл бұрын
@@robertalan4717 I agree, but you can't tell me that those scaffolds are safer than screwing a harness at the ridge and wearing it. This guy slips he falls. I slip no scaffolds and still don't fall. Takes two minutes to screw 3 screws at ridge and throw harness on. Bet you can't set scaffolding 2to3 scaffolds high all the around this house in less than 30 minutes, by that time Ill have half the roof off and you will just be getting started. Then not only will I be done long before you but you have to take all that scaffolding down. I'll be faster, safer and do less work. Cheers. 🥃

I just replaced my shingles with my dad and a friend. The old shingles had about 10 staples in each one. We pulled staples for 2 days, completely killed any momentum we though we would have.

if your right handed you start in top right ALWAYS! (unless it was nailed left handed then it gets interesting) find the god 2 shingle pattern then pop all nails repeat till roof is ripped. Some people do a 3 shingle rip starting in same spot i only seen 1 guy in my 10 year career do this. Exceptions if its hot and sticky and the seal isent breaking, square out a nice section with your ripper and roll it up getting all nails. (This sucks but happens usually when you rip in afternoon and dont get there at 7 AM) should have everything you are going to rip for the day done by 10-11 AM

Love the videos Shannon. Just one question...How long would it take you to remove a roof with multiple layers (3) of shingles?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 2 жыл бұрын
difficult to say, depends on size of roof and access to removal and amount of help you have. A 1200 sq' roof with one layer may take a first time single person over 2 hrs possibly

Hello Shannon! Here's a question - a fellow told me once that it's a common thing to cut the Metric shingles to the size of the English ones (English are discontinued a long time ago). Have you ever had to do such a task? What would you recommend? Taking into consideration that this should be a guaranteed job not just a DIY. Thank you in advance for your answer and for your awesome videos!

I guess if you are patching a old roof that has old size shingles but I have never seen that. No reason to do that on a new shingle job.

Have you ever tried prying up shingles from the bottom corner of the roof and then rolling the whole thing up like carpet? If you have tar paper that works. Of course, you can't roll the whole roof at once but it pulls up all the nails etc with it. I stripped my entire 22 square roof myself in less than 2 hours. That shovel was important to getting each roll started. Anyways, I love the videos, I donated on your site, I'll donate more as I watch videos.

Chad D been doing this for a year and I do the same. Start at the bottom corner and pull up 4 courses at at time, hands down easiest, fastest way to get that tear off expedited. Aloha from hawaiii

Are you scrolling up the tar paper with the shingles? Or just rolling the shingles? And how wide a swath?

Did the job, then stripped my neighbors' garage shingles to get my money's worth out of the shovel. They weren't happy about it. I threw a tarp over, but they're still suing me. I'm going to fix their car for free. BTW, that's called a "spade".

Any good tips to find the right shingle MFG and maybe type of shingle composite that will out-perform the basic? We get a lot of strong summers in the 90-100 and even 110F peaks every year..then for winter we do get a few weeks or more of a good rain, some with storms, and strong winds, and often gets cold to the 40's and some rare time dip into freezing a couple days a year.

Is it possible to remove half a roof of shingles in order to overlap new felt on pre-existing felt and to only do half of the roof with new shingles. Our roof was done like 10 years ago but recently had a pine tree fall and damage only a portion of our roof. I was hoping to only shingle half of the backside of the roof but will do it all if needed.

Have tarps ready to cover it. Screw the tarps down and place a few bundles on it incase the wind gets up. Or just strip what you can shingle in a shorter time if you prefer.
