I think in this chapter ichikawa might be showing us that there is no "peace" when you have unresolved trauma- just moments when you're better at ignoring your inner turmoil than others. Even in this supposed peace, where phos is just existing, their regret weighs heavy on them. The journey towards letting go of their trauma is just as treacherous as the trauma itself. Further, like Phos's role as "the last one", so the last person that remembers all these events, the last person to keep the memory of all the lustrous alive, the last person that can give meaning to those memories. Probably makes letting go even harder- cause does healing mean forgetting them? Does it mean that they didn't matter? Or that phos's suffering didn't matter? I predict also though that ichikawa will say that healing from trauma doesn't mean forgetting it. Like even as phos prayed everyone away into oblivion, new things evolve on the same land to do things similar- like sing and dance. Though I guess contrarily- the land of the lustrous is being consumed by the sea day by day..... Sorry kind of unintelligible rambling.

It’s interesting that Kongo did love them unconditionally and that Kongo is ok if the gems just existed. We saw this in context towards Cinnabar but it can be broadly applied to everyone including Phos. It only took a long length of time and another reminder in the form of a rock for this message of meaning to finally click with Phos in 99. We are truly witnessing the beginning of the end.

Wow, I can't imagine thinking Phos was too easily convinced by the rock. At that point, people are either not paying attention or just needlessly nitpicking.

I'm not sure if you missed this..but at least to me, it sure sounds like the song the rocks wrote is "Silent Night" with the words changed slightly to fit rock based beings....Now I don't know how Silent Night and the Buddist Themes mesh, but im getting more of a feeling of religion and how the state of the earth seems more like a new genesis of some kind.

@@ReturningSunn Reading it again....I think you have it wrong...the water isnt rising...its receeding. The land is starting to show through the water. The periods of ice ages seems to have begun to lower the levels of the oceans and give yield to land again for the new life to appear. God knows how long Phos just sat there after praying, and how long she spent just sitting next to her new friend. As for phos....She kinda fits the description of a god at this point. Shes absorbed all knowledge of the human race, has the power to allow souls to pass on...and now 'people' in her image have begun to appear.

Depends on what you mean. Are you talking about the story itself or the meaning behind it? The meaning behind it is a metaphorical exploration of the human condition viewed through Buddhist existentialism. Buddhist existentialism focuses on the fact that death is inevitable, dissatisfaction is inevitable, but that humans can change and take control of their lives through living in the moment and practicing mindfulness. We try to put meaning into things that truly have no meaning in the end, we can only live in a cycle of death and rebirth until we are enlightened. You cannot escape suffering until you are enlightened. Phos starts the story by disliking who they are. They cannot find their purpose in life because they do not accept themselves and therefore they suffer. If we are constantly changing, how can "I" be the body I am now? The truth is I cannot always be the "I" I was yesterday, or 10 years ago, or 100 years ago, because I change. You can see how Phos physically changes through new body parts, how they lose memories or alter personalities, because their trauma changes them. Yet they still can't accept themselves and they forget promises they make. By the end, when Phos has become truly human, we see the culmination of the human condition. Phos' dissatisfaction and trauma is a part of life, as terrible as it is. They can't escape because there is no way to forget what happened to them. They are burdened by the choices they made and are alone with nothing but memories of the past. Their intentions might have been good, but actions mean more than intentions. Phos is still trapped in the concept of death and rebirth because they desperately want meaning to their pain (death being the loss of body parts and rebirth being the search of a new goal). If they try to move on and forget everything, then does their suffering means nothing? No one else can remember except Phos because everyone else is gone. They live in the past. Phos, even in the end, clings to the statements of "I wanted *everyone else* to love me" instead of loving themselves. In Buddhism, you can't give love to others if you don't love yourself, and you can't seek goals for the sake of others' validation. The truth is that letting go is very difficult. Phos shows that. We have our humanly attachments for a reason. No one in the story is pure good or pure evil, they are all morally grey characters who makes choices, just as humans are. We can only acknowledge these things. Growing and changing are things that sometimes just happen. There is not meaning behind it. Sometimes it is just painful. Phos granting peace and praying everyone away into nothingness was their first act of enlightenment and it gave them happiness. Nothingness is neither painful or joyous, it is peace. It is the end of the endless cycle. Phos' end goal is find that peace as well, to look within and release themselves from their own suffering.
