this video reminded me just how much shit phos has gone through in the 600+ years they've been alive. like, imagine going through so much and making an effort to bring back the friends they've lost, having to deal with depression and ptsd in the process and eventually being betrayed by everyone they loved (all of who have made NO actual effort to willingly help or understand phos) and still get kept barely alive for 220 more years as everyone eventually forgets about them and they have to live with all of that for those 220 years that they just lose their will to live? fuckin hurts man. someone give phos a hug already.

I wouldn't say everyone betrayed Phos, if anything it's the other way around. She's the one who manipulated and stole their friends, their loved ones. She's the one who is willing to kill sensei for the goals of the lunarians, their enemy. The first inciting element of this series was Phos' promise to Cinnabar, but when Cinnabar refuses to betray everyone, to betray Adamant, what does Phos do? She forgets that the promise ever happened, never stops to think if she's in the wrong. What's Antarcticites dying request to Phos? Take care of winter, don't let sensei be alone, Phos would kill sensei for her goals now though and definitely hasn't been taking care of winter. Furthermore, it's no coincidence that in the last chapter when Phos is finally put back together, sensei is alone, the thing Antarcticite would want least. The manga is investing you in Phos as the main character, her goals from her perspective, and her justifications. Simultaneously though it's writing her as the villain of the story, as the antagonist to everyone that isn't Phos.

@@SolaticSyot I thought they were genderless? Officially the gems have no gender, but often in the manga they are referred to as "he", "this guy", or "him"
@SolaticSyot5 жыл бұрын
@@joannewu4068 I mean I'm not sure what this has to do with Phos being the villain, but yes they are genderless. Though, the attempt to use gender neutral pronouns in English often fails and causes confusion due to the language not having a good way of doing this. (I mean, stories of biologically genderless humans probably wasn't necessary during the development of the language.) As for the manga, it's official translation also attempts to be neutral, which I can't speak to of whether they make it work or not as I've not read it. The fan translations use "he" as the standard because they've done a more literal translation of it from Japanese. However, from my understanding, the use of "he" or what you could call "he" in Japanese is a bit more neutral. More akin to when you say "hey guys", guys doesn't denote genders of the group, even though a "guy" is a male. This is without mentioning that the scientist guy refers to Phos as miss gem when he first meets her. (Not that I'm saying the choice of translation to he is wrong btw. It's probably the best way of translating it in all fairness.) Regardless, I think it's pretty acceptable to use whatever you want. It also seems like most reasonable people share this opinion. Besides, gender isn't remotely a theme of the story, just a world building detail. I'm personally more inclined to use she, for the obvious reasons of them being quite feminine. It's also more fulfilling to think that my gem ships are yuri, because I'm a fan of the sub genre. If you want to use "he" or whatever be my guest, but this changes nothing, Phos is still the villain. :p
@AvoRabo5 жыл бұрын
the great thing about hnk is that it doesn't really have a "villain" from an objective perspective. we're biased to sympathize with the gems because the main character is a gem, but phos, as a character naturally inclined to empathize with others beyond the normal constraints of gem society, hears the lunarians out and wholeheartedly believes that what they're doing is in the best interest of everyone involved. from gem society's perspective, yes, phos does seem like a traitor and a villain. but from phos' perspective, everyone else is being unreasonable, because when offered with a chance to get their fallen friends back they exhibit no interest in taking it, because they would rather maintain the status quo. phos isn't perfect; he forgets his promise to cinnabar, to antarc, abuses cairngorm's loyalty, etc, but he never once does it out of animosity. he loves his family, and deep down, he loves sensei too. phos is in a very stressful situation: everything rides on his shoulders, and he's handling it as best he can, but he's not perfect, and just because he makes mistakes or decides that his promise to cinnabar isn't the most important, pressing matter in his life at the moment doesn't make him a villain. phos is a great protagonist because he's willing to take the stance that no one else would think to take. he's willing to jeopardize the comfortable life of ignorance he's been living in order to create a better future, and there's nothing wrong with that. hnk is a story about the benefits of change, even though change is often scary and uncertain. even if the story ended with the end of gem society altogether, I still think it would be incorrect to declare that phos is a villain. his intentions are wholly centric on protecting the others and making a better life for gems. he hasn't sided with the lunarians, but is rather trying to get a grasp on their perspective in order to find a solution to their problems, and that just so happens to involve sensei. as far as the gender debate goes, yes, they are genderless, but because gender is a nonexistent concept in gem society I don't think it really matters what pronouns you use. I just use male pronouns usually because the translation of the manga I read had that and im used to it, but they're not male. and yes, im pretty sure the Japanese neutral pronoun was adapted to mean "he/him" for western audiences back when western influence started trying to translate Japanese texts, which initially didn't have gender specific pronouns, but don't quote me on that because I'm still learning 🤔 -avery
@SolaticSyot5 жыл бұрын
@@AvoRabo I don't think that really works because you'd never be able to call a character a villain outside maybe a few extreme cases. I also don't think Phos' motives are important to her status as one, the sympathetic or good intentioned villain is a pretty well known trope. This is the same way some of the best villains are written, typically they're just not the protagonist though. To throw it to another anime, obviously you'd never suggest that Light is the hero of Death Note just because he's the protagonist and has good intentions. Sure the god complex and evil laugh makes it obvious he's the villain, but that isn't what makes him the villain, it's his other actions. As for Phos, let me lay out my reasoning a little better here. I don't think it's insignificant that the driving motivation established at the very beginning of the story for Phos, is the thing that is broken when she joins the Lunarians. It's not just a broken promise, it's a metaphor for her transition to being a villain. Likewise with Antarcticite, the very person who made the threat of the Lunarians feel real, made a dying request of Phos that she didn't just not keep, but is actively defying. Now one could argue that she shouldn't be beholden to a request of the dead like that. However, considering how much impact and how important this was to Phos herself, you would think that she'd give it more thought. There is also instances where the manga is hinting at this being the case. Even just looking around the time she switches side I think there are two notable examples. The way she is drawn in a lot of panels, like when she suggests betraying Adamant to Aechmea makes her look sinister. Why? Because she's doing something wrong? Even if she has her reasons, isn't this what makes a villain a villain? Then there is when she goes back to the moon, and that scene when the others find out the gems are dust. They put emphasis on the fact that Phos hasn't negotiated the return of the gems. She's not doing this for the good of her friends, even if that's what she's telling herself, rather she's working for the Lunarians. Edit: Actually I want to add here, in respect to HnK being about change. Yes I agree, however, I'm not so sure that it's outright saying that change is beneficial, or that breaking convention is beneficial. I mean, maybe it's bias that I just find the premise fundamentally disagreeable. I could easily imagine a scenario or probably find a point in history where change has been an inarguable negative. Things and people can change for the better, or the worse. Likewise, empathy is not a universal good either, especially when incites change. It may be extreme, but empathy for the Nazism or Hitler, and change incited by that empathy, would be really difficult for normal people to argue a positive in any fashion. Yet this can be the result of empathy and change, just not the kind of empathy and change you would desire to see. Even when she finds out that many of the lost gems, including Antarcticite can't be returned, she doesn't reconsider at all. Idk, I think she's a villain with good intentions. Since Phos is the protagonist and we understand her motives, we're inclined to sympathize with her. It's either subtle and great writing, or I'm completely reading too much into it. I don't think I am obviously, but I would also acknowledge I perfectly well could be. Also yea, I just hate that it's a debate in the first place, it's not even that big of a deal. Some people always seem convinced that the way they do something is right and everything else is wrong. Oh well, I don't want to dwell on it

id also like to add for more emphasis that phos is the only gem who changes physically in this way. none of the other gems get new legs or arms or eyes, and none of the other gems have the level of empathy that phose does. in this context, phos's empathy can be seen in their ability and desire to change in a world where change isn't natural because every other gem is functionally immortal.

When suffering has a huge influence in our lives, we tend to not have the capacity to empathize with others and their problems or we tend to spread it. I feel like Phos did have a huge amount of empathy when they was naive but as time passed and Phos' suffering just kept building, Phos is slowly forgetting what empathy is like which is understandable and human. If anyone went through the same thing that Phos did, they would act in the same way. I want Phos to create her own idea of herself, accept change and responsibility and forgive themselves. Please forgive yourself Phos

People seem to think that kindness and empathy guarantee goodness, it doesn’t. It just means that if a kind person stumbles and falls they usually end up taking one of two paths. In both paths they might become stronger, but on one path they could become wiser and learn from their mistakes becoming martyrs like Jesus Christ, or they end up murderous sociopaths blaming everyone for the suffering they inflicted on themselves like Darth Vader. Two guesses as to which route Phos took. Also many of the gems have suffered in similar way as Phos has, many have lost friends and partners and even blame themselves centuries after the fact. Cinnabar and Antarc were both disabled like Phos but chose to do the best they could with the jobs they were given even if they might not have liked it. None of them ever betrayed their own for the Lunarians or endangered each other on purpose.

Pretty spot on, complete self -sufficiency, the absence of any real consequence and a collectivist mindset lead to many gems internalising their struggles. And it does seem the Lunarians have much of the same problem considering how willing they are to other the gems and destroy them to the point of almost no return. To me the Admirabilas probably have the healthiest society since they never lose ties to their mortality though that has ultimately made their entire race a pawn to both the gems and moon people.

The show also brings to mind the concept of Kintsugi, in which a thing that is broken becomes more beautiful after being repaired. The golden alloy that Phos uses to replace their arms and has since webbed it's way throughout their body is a pretty direct reference to the practice that uses gold-dusted lacquer to repair broken pottery. Whenever Phos gets repaired with new material they become more useful, though usually at the cost of some of her memories and a change in her personality.

Ive always heard people finding the correlation in the story of change comes with pain (everytime phos makes an effort to change they lose their limbs and more of themself (personality wise) plus consequences) and also themes of what makes a meaninful existence. First time seeing a take where empathy is the catalyst for phos's changes, that is when they lose parts of themselves due to their doing an act for another person because of empathy. Cant believe i didnt make that connection! I guess i did subconsciously notice because although phos is useless in a sense they cant controbute anything to the gem society, but i figured phos's high ability to have empathy for others was what gave them their worth. And also how the gems could sometimes rub me the wrong way in their actions and interactions with each other. They all can lack empathy outside of the physical because they are missing that "humanity" in a brief existence and human anatomy. *mind blown noises* Youve opened my eyes to some missing pieces (lol) i had in the stories theme. I feel like the ones that were most affected by Phos empathy paid back Phos in a way and went to the moon with them Cairngorm & Ghost - Phos went to the library and let Ghost vent about sad feelings for Lapis and how they keep praying, agreed to be partners with them after years of being partnerless, made Cairngorm come to Sensei for a new name and their own identity, sacrificed his head to recover Cairn's arm ||| Cairn sacrificed their arm to save Phos, offered Lapis' head and their own, went to Earth raid to recover Phos without Aechmea's permission Diamond - Dia talked to Phos about how humiliated and worthless they felt compared to Bortz (which Phos understood because they were also considered worthless) but Phos reassured Dia that they were much nicer and better than Bortz meaning that their fighting ability did not define them ||| Dia praised Phos for helping pinpoint Ventricosus' weak spot, kept taking care of Ventricosus because they thought they were Phos, she vents to only "Phos" about her true feelings (only acting kind for the sake of being liked and feeling envious towards Bortz), and got everyone together to get Phos out the shell (and more but I'm too lazy to explain). Padparadscha - Phos talks to only Padpa about their secrets and advice and Padpa knows they would only talk to them for this, Phos also related to Padpa by having so many operations done on, Phos brings Padpa to the moon to revive them and stop Rutile from doing further operations ||| Padpa protects Phos from Cinnabar's mercury, Padpa saves Phos from Rutile. Ame 84 - Phos felt sorry and indebted to the twins after almost letting them get taken away, after seeing Phos change so much Ame is inspired to change and gain her own individuality ||| She listens to Phos and helps research the gem recovery. Yellow - Phos relates to Yellow when they've lost everybody that they loved, they comfort them by promising to bring everybody back ||| Yellow is still not used to the change and is confused... She hasn't done much because they've rejected their own identity in order to become a lunarian. Benito - Phos becomes something so different than what they remembered in such a short amount of time, so they're inspired to change as well, then being on the moon makes them unique and not being plain and normal ||| Benito also hasn't done much for Phos, because she's neutral between both sides like Yellow. Alex - Phos is the only one that is actually interested in lunarians like Alex, and brings her to the moon to research more but instead, Alex learns how to cook and they get friends to accompany them than like at home ||| Alex decides to help Phos in the final raid by using her special ability. Goshe - Phos is badass and is Goshe's idol, Phos promises to show Goshe the old version of her, and Phos protects Goshe from the lunarians and loses their hair from it ||| Goshe and Padpa are the only ones to go to Earth and save Phos, she saves Phos and is worried about how they're slowly breaking down into fewer parts. (Cinnabar most likely was about to follow Phos before Bortz interrupted them) Cinnabar - literally everything lol, but the community that she wanted validation from for her entire life stopped her from following Phos because he was perceived as a terrible person Ventricosus - Phos helped her recover Aculeatus, Phos is quick to forgive Ventricosus after hearing her story even though she betrayed him ||| Ventricosus feels bad for Phos and gives them legs made of a ruler's shell

Amazing video, and still hits well after recent developments. Now it just feels so much more clear that Phos and Cinnabar's early inability to contribute was a result of both of them being measured against a society focused on war and fighting, rather than just their inherit worth. There's manga spoilers so I won't go into details, especially since those spoilers have come out in the time since this video was made, but it's kind of like the quote: "Everybody is a genius. But, if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid." If their society hadn't been forced into such a defensive position from the very start, things may have been very different.

Absolutely perfectly worded. Even with the new chapters, phos has truly gotten the short end of the stick. I came to dislike a lot of the gems that stayed behind, particularly jade because everyone villianized the change phos was creating for the good of them all. Phos wanted nothing but to save their family from future kidnapping, and in response was betrayed by their family- Although phos has somewhat lost sight of their goal, it doesn't change the fact that no one was willing to believe or care for phos when they needed it the most.

It’s questionable if that desire was genuinely for their good or more self serving. One theory is that Sensei was refusing to grant the Lunarians peace because he wanted to give his children “the Gems” the most precious gift he could. The illusion of death. Like the Lunarians, the Gems are immortal and yet unlike the Lunarians the Gems aren’t quite as jaded. We see a few of them like Yellow Diamond actually wishing that they would be taken to the moon. Why? Because that is the closest the Gems will ever come to knowing death, especially after Achmaea decided to grind them into powder, and as Ventricosous once said “it’s not really such a sad thing you know, death gives meaning to life”. So by simply knowing that there was an end, the Gems got to experience life in full. So really, which sounds better? Living the unending existence that the Lunarians have for the next 10,000 years or repeating the closest thing to a human cycle they had?
@mayo-bl9qf3 жыл бұрын
@@krisynthiagomez5883 Yes but consider the trauma of having your loved ones ripped from you violently for no apparent reason- You're absolutely right in the idea that knowing that there is an end, the gems got to experience life in full. The illusion of death allows us to cherish what we cannot hold onto forever, so isn't that why Phos's motivation is good? Phos has experienced the loss of loved ones, and therefore can understand the importance of cherishing the lives of the gems still left- So in that sense is Phos's motivation the very result of a meaningful life? I don't think it's about choosing painstaking immortality or experiencing the closest thing to a human cycle- I think it's so much more simpler than that- It's heartbreaking to see people you love die and Phos wanted to protect that, nothing more and nothing less. It's not some profound breakthrough- it's just a character crushed from grief.

It’s interesting when you discover how empathy varies between the three tribes depending on their mortality. The Admirabale may have a great amount of empathy shown by Ventricosous, and the snails who follow Phos around the moon, the Gems process of empathy varies but generally speaking they are caring as they don’t act to hurt anything living on purpose, or when it’s not threatening, the Lunarians on the other hand are almost entirely lacking in empathy and are ruthless. Although something I wonder after binging the manga over again, are the Lunarians ruthless because of their immortality or because of who they are as a people? According to both Kongo Sensei and Achmaea, the Lunarians terrorizing the Gems are “dregs”, criminals who were last in line because of their actions in their past lives and forced to live in eternity after Kongo stopped praying.

What’s amazing is that later in the manga you understand why no other gem really cared about Phos even after all that suffering, they aren’t human therefore don’t feel empathy, phos on the other hand, by replacing their body with flesh and soul (agate and synthetic pearl) they become human, thus making them feel more emotions, like vengeance !

6:34 wrong. That is dia being self destructive and break themself while fighting lunarian with new tactic. Bort being mad bc dia break themself while ignore his warning. They lie to bort and fight alone bc they want to prove themself. I mean... Bort kanna have mean additude. But they are still just being overprotactive.

that cool and all but why do you keep calling the characters pluraly? Are you talking about all the gems of this type or just the one character?
I'm not trying to be mean, but why are you so quiet in this video???? I'm trying to listen while I play a game, and even turning the game to 50% volume isn't enough for me to hear this video?????????????/
