Despite how this Numidian was using his forces I somehow had a feeling he would lose. Especially when I noticed the name of Sulla's biggest rival in the Roman ranks. I had heard he was a pretty fair military commander in his own right. Nice video. And Merry Christmas House of History.

If Jugurtha had Libyan, Iberian or Germanic heavy infantry he could have crushed even Marius and Sulla and would have killed them in Battle, the reason why that wasn't was because the Numidians were a good cavalry but not infantry, they couldn't cope with Roman attacks.

Just an small correction Scipio Africanus the younger was not adopted by the famous Scipio of the Second Punic War but the son of this famous general, these two were cousins as you say though as they both were grandsons of the consul Aemelius Paullus who died at Cannae. In the Numantine War besides Marius, Jugurtha and Scipio a young Tiberius Gracchus also saw action, this war was an odd place in which several of the most important figures of the last century of The Republic started to carve their place in History.

I think Jugurtha's mistake was cutting off the line of retreat for the Romans. The Mongols for instance are said to have always left a clear path of escape when ambushing/enveloping enemies so that panic would set in as desperate soldiers flocked for the seemingly easy escape. when your enemy knows they must either fight or die, they will fight much harder.
@frankkiri3982 жыл бұрын
Roman generals historically placed their armies in positions where they had to die or win, whenever they were outnumbered, going back to rome as a loser was woese than death. Sulla, Ceasar, Germanicus, Paulinus, Aurelian, Aetius and Belisarius. Just to name a few used this approach to gain victories from certain defeat Same military philosophy has been used since by napoleon , lee, patton and zhukov.
