I used to over water when I only had a couple to fuss over. Now I have a house full, I'm not constantly hovering over each one (and I'm careful with how much water I give them because it saves me trips to refill my watering can) ... So my solution is more plants!! 🌿🌿🌿 🤭

I just discovered your videos and I’ve started binging my way through them. I got into Plants about a year and a half ago, but my mom passed away unexpectedly in September and since then I’ve thrown myself into it, and now I have approx 125 plants. I want to learn everything I can and I tried watching course videos, but this is far far far better! Thank you!

OK I recently purchased two snake plants and I planted them in two large pots from Home Depot two large planters they’re really tall so I water them about every three days one of them I noticed has water filled to the top and is it raining at all my pots don’t have holes to the bottom but it came with some type of drainage tray that’s made inside and also I noticed some mold on topOf the water I also have rocks just for decoration large white rocks up top what should I do and why is this happening

So very helpful! I was a heavy waterer when I first started collecting plants. I quickly learned and converted almost all of my plants to terra cotta pots and added pumice or perlite & orchid bark to the soil mixes. My Spathiphyllum thanks you for your capillary action tips though. 😂 I have to find one of those wicking ceramic planters with the hole in the side. Such an aesthetically pleasing solution.

Wow Summer Rayne! I was totally hooked onto this video until the end. Although I don't usually overwater my plants, I always love to see the knowledge you so willingly share. I love that terracotta hydrospike contraption. I never seen that before. I love the soil medium mixture you recommended too, we live in Florida and get high humidity all yr so it's tough keeping my plants healthy and usually requires a lot of maintaince. That soil looks like a good one along with the terracotta pots I use for most of my plants. It's hard to grow in plastic here. Thanks so much for sharing!!

I had my ZZ plant in a glazed pot and it wasn't doing well. I recently put it in a terra cotta pot and it's doing better. Same with my Cast Iron plant. It is in a glazed pot and very slow growing even though it gets good light. Yes,these pots hold in water.

Thanks again Summer, I started out being somewhat of a over waterer, but I have learned so much and now I let my plants get completely dry and also get a soil mixture that is more airy and drains well. I also like that when I don't overwater that the fungus gnats stay away so much better.

Thank you Summer. I used to love my plants so much I would give them too much "liquid live". Yes, I was an overwaterer. I now use a moisture meter and that really helped. Have a good one, Gerry 😎
@hpeteacher9445
@hpeteacher9445 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick! How are you? A moisture meter is a probe you can insert into your plant's soil that tells you how much water is in it. The more expensive ones will also tell you the soil's ph level and how much light your plant is receiving. You know how people use their finger to see if their plant needs to be watered? It is the same thing, but much more accurate. You are getting a reading at the root's level. I used to over water my plants before, but not anymore. The moisture meter has really helped me know when to and not to water my plants. Hope that helped, Gerry 😎

When I first got into plants 5 or 6 years ago I knew nothing and only had bad tips from other people who didn't have plants either. I just saw a cool one at Safeway one day. My understanding was that if the water catching tray was dry, you should water the plants. I over watered sooo much out of just not knowing and I thought I just was bad at houseplants. I started learning to wait to water through having self watering pots with clear bottoms so I could see how much water they really wanted and how often. ☺️🌿🌵now I am (obviously) much more successful at growing all types of plants.

I’m an overwaterer fo sho. Recently I put so much perlite in my soil my mom commented on it from another state! (She noticed in the background of an image I sent) also I’ve drilled some holes in the bottom of those clear talenti gelato containers and used a couple glass vases for some of my plants so I can clearly (🤠pun) see how much moisture is still in the soil. I did this for the ones that need to fully dry out between waterings, and so far it’s been MUCH better. I haven’t killed a single plant all year ;) also for my plant’s water I use the leftover water in my electric kettle every day so that I can always start with fresh distilled for my tea, as one should. Also people- take your tea bags out after 3 to 5 minutes don’t leave em in! That’s gross. Steeping is an event, not a stasis.

the only thing that stopped ME from overwatering plants was using plant app like Planta, which will remind you what plant needs to be watered. Guilty, at first I would still water them in between the notifications, but after I killed another pothos, I decided to buy soil moisture meter in addition to the app. Those two work for me real well so far.

I have a Gerbera Daisy. I've noticed that of course I've over watered my plant since it is showing some spots of the leaves are turing yellow and some are dried out and browned as well. So it would be best to just go ahead and re-pot it. I have used a miracle grow plant feeder spray pump to help. I thought maybe I would let it dry out since the soil is moist at the moment and then try re potting it. Would that be the best thing to do or ?? My first plant ever so I'm still learning! 😭😭😭

Question! There are a lot of plants that like to dry out between waterings. Since hydro spikes keep the soul constantly moist, wouldn't they harm those kinds of plants? I'm at about eighty houseplants now, and if they are the watering cure all you make them sound like I'd love the help to be lazy 😅 but that doesn't sound right and seems too good to be true. As it stands I've only killed a small handful from over watering, and I use almost exclusively glazed ceramic. The first knuckle trick seems to work pretty universally. I guess I'd mostly benefit from hydro spikes by being able to leave town without stressing out over if my roommate will murder my plants on accident 😅 I'm at about eighty houseplants now and I've only killed a few from

These people should grow a water cultured pothos. When the water seems low they can just refill the vessel to capacity. Riparian (plants that live by streams and the like) and amphibious plants like hyrdocotyle tripartita love wet feet and can become emersed (an aquatic plant that adapted to become terrestrial) and submersed (underwater).

Got one 2 weeks ago and she still looks great! I must admit I have killed 2 and I had given up. With all the help from people on youtube I decided to try again because they are sooo beautiful! She was way too wet when I got her. Didn't need to water her for 2 days. I have a moisture meter and it is very helpful. I mist her in the morning and she is in the living room with a humidifier. She is probably 8 feet away from our picture window and I really think that location is (to me) the most important thing. She doesn't want air blowing on her, or any direct sunshine. In this situation she seems to need water every other day. The minute I see her BEGIN to look different, unhappy, sort of, kind of start to droop, I check her out. So far, so good. But having said all that, I would really enjoy a video on the maiden hair from Summer, she is brilliant.

I have a question! For trailing plants in macrame, I find that they are very hard to take out of the macrame to water. How would you go about watering plants that are difficult to maneuver, such as plants in macrame, or very large heavy plants that maybe you cannot lift. I often keep a saucer under my hanging plants, but run into the problem of retrieving the saucer to dump the excess water out. Same for large plants.

linda lohan I use a turkey baster to suck the excess water out of the saucer/drip tray.

@@kelzbelz313 great solution. I also dip the saucer to the side and use a bowl to collect excess water

 kelly McGregor has a great solution with the baster. I also dip the saucer to the side and use a bowl to collect excess water. For larger plants, you can also use the baster method. Additionally, if you have a large plant in a cachepot, as I have for my fig, I use the 2/3 watering method.

Any advice on Mums? I have six yellow Mums I bought and I was told to water twice a day only at the base of the plant, never to water on the flowers themselves. I've had them only a month and they are already turning brown, they get plenty of sunlight.

In the begining I was an overwater. It brought those damn fungus gnats..turns out they are reduced by 80% by keeping my plants dryish..however my moisture loving plants dont like me lol

A study on the death of plants by overwatering😆 Your videos are like an internet plant hug in the morning... I'm most curious as to your method on soil mix and amendments. Do you have a formula broken down into percentages or do you go by feel and eyeball it?

I have overwatered my ficus elastica variegata overnight. And its dropping.. I tried changing the soil just the next day and even checked the root. Now i water it little every day. But it's still droppy. What to do.?
@flameingirl
@flameingirl 5 жыл бұрын
Manali There's absolutely no need to water your rubber tree every day. Water fully until the water drains out of the water hole, and then wait to water until the plant feels dry. This can potentially be a couple days, or over a week, depending on how large your pot is.

Water related if not on point, I saw you use bottled distilled water in an earlier video, how do you feel about distillers? I have a couple of prayer plants and a peace lilly, and I’ve been considering it. My lilly is sprouting and blooming but always with 2-3 yellow leaves, I’m SO not overwatering this guy though, so thinking rest-face tap water is the culprit there...
