I moved in NYC housing when my two sons were young. I needed a 2 bedroom apartment and housing was the only thing that was affordable at the time. The building had a bad reputation, but I lived on a quiet floor. I stayed was there for 9 years. I was blessed to get out 30 years ago. It was a struggle, but we made it.

Mrs' Alston is exaggerating not ALL of her children were incarcerated, though some were. Her daughter Sharon is a PhD. The recently deceased Walter ( Big Chick ) was incarcerated in his youth but spent many years tirelessly giving back to the community and giving guidance and direction to the youth of Queensbridge and helping the elderly. I know the entire family as we lived on the same block. The late Mr. Alston " Sonny " ( the Patriarch) was a good man - he had a hot dog van. I bought Hot Sausages from him in the good weather. He was always very protective of me and respectful towards my Mother and Grandmother. He loved to gamble and had a host of friends.Stanley ( who died sometime in the early "80s) was a true neighborhood character - we shared many a pint of wine - Stanley and I. Not everyone is born with privilege. Some people are born into poverty.Some people have differing cultures. People are people. We're much more alike than we are different. That's what my experience living for 20 + years in public housing taught me. It's a lesson that no amount of money can buy.
@Smileyyy215 жыл бұрын
How was he great when he gambled the money away?
@missg17275 жыл бұрын
If that ain't the truth. Money absolutely can't buy life experiences. If you haven't been there, growing up in the projects and poverty, you would not understand...
@missg17275 жыл бұрын
@@Smileyyy21 -He never said he gambled all his money away, he did well to have 12 children. Also, you didn't hear Mrs. Alston say they had any financial issues raising her children there. Oh and just because he gambled don't make him a bad person...you borderline judged him...

Started life in the projects until my parents bought a home in Long Island when I was 11. Had good memories of childhood there. It wasn't so bad then. The projects can be a starting point it doesn't have to be a life long thing. I am married and we have raised our kids in our own home from the beginning
@tinytt8546 жыл бұрын
Deneen Jeffries good for you. I had a house, 4 bdrms,3 sons and now I am in a studio. projects can be a starter and an ender when you get old and can only work retail part-time. I wish I could get a place in the projects.
@deneenjeffries27686 жыл бұрын
Tammy Ryder that was my point . Everyone there isn't on welfare or has no ambition. Well run public housing has its place.Whether it's a beginning or ending for people who need smaller places because of health or decline in income. Especially in places where the rents are so darn high.

I am very pleased to see this young man in college. I hope it means a better life for him and his future family. I've seen the projects,in Chicogo, and that is no way to live. I live in a small city in Wisconsin, and our housing authority is swamped with black people from Illinois looking for a better life. fine with me, but where is the money coming from? I was in the h.a.'s office one day, and there was a lady just having a fit because her son who just got out of prison, couldn't live with her. I want a better life for all of us, but if you break the rules, that's it. those projects are nasty. they are building a new kind now. houses,not buildings. lots of space for kids. I hope they work better.

I used to live in Queensbridge. I explain to people in other states that my old neighborhood was like a "city within a city". Yes, it has its share of crime like other places and parking sucked, but there were plenty of good qualities also. Everything was accessible: the hospitals, the library, laundromats, supermarkets, a Manhattan skyline view, public transportation, parks, cabs, schools, restaurants, etc. Most of the people were decent and of course some were not. It's the bad and criminal minded people that mess things up for everybody. Those individuals should stop throwing garbage all over our place of residence and stop urinating in the hallways, staircases, elevators, etc. We all can help keep our neighborhoods clean and safe. If it wasn't NYCHA poor people wouldn't have an affordable place to live in NYC ☺

If you love your kids get the fuck out of the projects. While some people leaving their kids property all you can do is put your child's name on the lease so they can take over your project apartment. Having people coming and inspecting your apartment every year is humiliating, use project housing to save money so you can get the fuck out of there. Nobody ever mentions this but poverty is dangerous and New York like San Francisco is extremely expensive 2500 a month for a studio in SF. So I understand people say move out of the city but this is the only place that has opportunities.

It’s a sad thing when people start to love living in poverty. This is Stockholm Syndrome in it’s purest form. As for the cops, you can’t blame them for judging you based on the masses of irresponsible goons that inhabit the area. We all profile, making associations is what smart people do.

Dont get me wrong she seems sweet and probably a good person, and she’s also not complaining or blaming anyone else...but alot of other women will put themselves in that situation and wonder why thier life sucks. As for the guy at the end in college...mad because the police checked him out and searched him...think of thier position...think of what goes on where u live, think of the people and situations they have to deal with day in and day out. Im white from Boston...not the projects but still in the city and I have been randomly stopped and searched multiple times. Unfortunately for me I actually was up to no good and had “stuff” on me (ill leave it at that)...but that doesnt change the fact I hadnt commited a crime, I just looked suspicious. Did it suck, absolutely...but im older now and living better and understand why it happened. And when he said you could be someone, maybe that was his way of giving you a compliment.
