Where i live houses are built specifically for Section 8. As a result anyone who lives in these housing units often carry the stigma of being section 8.

It might be helpful to point out that the specifics of how subsidized housing works varies state-to-state. Some (like Maine, where I live) separate out the applications for subsidized apartment complexes from the vouchers, which can be used on non-subsidized housing that might be more convenient for work/school/doctors/etc., with different processes for each. The very long wait times on waiting lists for subsidized housing (you can be waiting over a year because of high demand + low supply) may mean it's easier for some to try to go the voucher route instead. I also looked at how it worked in NH, since I'm not that far from the border, and their whole system is different. The structural differences between states probably makes it...complicated at best...to do meaningful studies that are broader in scope. Trying to move from one state to another when you're on state assistance is also an ordeal, since those systems also work differently and you can't just transfer from one to the other, which also decreases mobility and practical options for folks who might have fare better on the other side of a border (or in a different region entirely)...if only there were reasonable means to make it happen.

We studied this topic in depth in my Urban Politics class last semester! As further reading, I would strongly recommend David Imbroscio's piece “BEYOND MOBILITY: THE LIMITS OF LIBERAL URBAN POLICY” and for even further reading I'd recommend Patrick Sharkey's book "STUCK IN PLACE: URBAN NEIGHBORHOODS AND THE END OF PROGRESS TOWARD RACIAL EQUALITY ." I learned a ton from both of those.

Want to know what is really difficult? Being paralyzed and on housing is so difficult that if rent is raised once more I'll have to be homeless and I'd rather be dead than homeless while paralyzed! The hoops I have to go thru to move out of this apartment that is too small for my wheelchair is astronomical! Plus finding a place accessable for me is almost impossible! Housing needs to be fixed!

A big problem with Section 8 is that they do not cover damages to property, and landlords know they can't sue the destitute tenants if they trash the place. Now, don't get me wrong, not all Section 8 tenants are bad people who trash the house, but there are enough horror stories about them to scare potential landlords away from accepting Section 8 at all. This makes it even harder for good Section 8 renters to find a place to live. I do, however, agree, that housing needs a major fix.

I keep reading how some hud renters trash a place, but they do have a recheck atleast once or every 2 years to make sure the place is still liveable. i guess those who do accept the renter dont remind them as to not trashing a place or can be evicted by chance cause i guessing they can call hud and report any to warn the renter to not trash a place or get busted some how. i see it no different then u get a place with no help and gotta maintain it and call if need to at time. where i at there are decent staff who do fix stuff if need be at time and that last resort if we cant do it ourself. if ever they get calls and come by and check places and fix all they can before they call anyone to fix to save any.

I work in housing services for a public health organization, so this is kind of my job. We're in the Boston area, and Boston Housing Authority is potentially instituting small area FMRs as soon as this summer. I'm excited to see the opportunities that this will bring to our clients who already have vouchers, to really getting a choice out of their "Housing Choice" vouchers. I'm also worried about a couple of the possible effects: many of our clients have already faced racist harassment just looking for housing in wealthier neighborhoods. The Boston area is extremely segregated, and moving to higher-income/higher-opportunity areas can expose people to racism while also separating them from their social support network. Plus, the cost the housing authority pays per voucher is likely to go up, meaning that some people who have been promised vouchers (after waiting 10+ years on the waiting list) may have their voucher taken away or suspended. Meanwhile the rents go up and up endlessly, and budgets for housing stagnate.....

My parents live in a small townhome development. There used to be several section 8 renters on their street, and those houses were _always_ trashed. Not only were the dwellings trashed, but the police were always at those houses because of drugs and domestic violence. Also, there always seemed to be small crowds of people gathered in front of those houses, and suddenly we had abandoned grocery store carts left on the sidewalks (!?). In short, the amount of chaos _increased_ in the neighborhood, but did not increase in the Section 8 houses.

You should talk about the VA’s HUD/VASH program. Great outcomes and I imagine the general public is supportive of the program.

Wait, so, to fix the issue of people living in poor living conditions is to try and move a few of them to nicer areas... instead of just improving the areas they came from, by building good public housing and getting people vocational training to give them better jobs. Why are market solutions so garbage, oh right... its because they are market solutions.

There is nothing in this that is a market solution. This is just a housing subsidy. Just because they use the term voucher doesn't mean that it has anything to do with a school voucher program. The same language was used in all likelihood to get certain conservative legislators on board especially if that legislation was written at the state level. Educational vouchers mimic the market because it returns some of your tax dollars to use for a service. Without those laws, the allotment of dollars given per student would be a sunk cost. You can either utilize those dollars by going to your local public school or you lose your allotted tax dollars along with the added cost of providing home schooling or private school. School vouchers then allow you to take the money that government has set aside for your child's education to use in their public schools, nearby public schools, home school resources, private schools, co-ops, etc. Therefore we can have many schools vying for your business. And you as a parent can choose the right academic environment for your child. There are issues with educational vouchers, but they are certainly much better than what we have now. Children shouldn't be stuck in a school merely because teacher's unions don't like competition. It's funny that this policy seemed to be a way to give students school mobility, but keep them in public schools only and is way way more expensive than school vouchers.

I've been watching this channel since the very beginning. I watched the episodes of crash course, I believe it was, before this channel was a thing. I'm not sure I've ever seen a solution espoused that called for less government interference. When it comes to policy the solution is always, "There ought to be a law". That being said, the policy prescriptions are almost always done without a partisan angle. I appreciate that. However, I think you all can do a much better job of discussing free market solutions.

Uh yeah, by definition a change to the government's policy is a change to a law or its enforcement. Free market solutions require startups, capital or the attention of corporate executive officers and I don't see many of them pondering over youtube. Plenty of voting age citizens though.

I hate to come off as cold here but I’m against making people rent to people on section 8 housing. My family has rented a few houses for years in Texas an both families we rented to on section 8 destroyed those houses. Doing so much damage the security deposit wasn’t even a drop in the bucket. What worse is because they are low income you’ll never get your money back from them because they don’t have it. It took years for each house to make up the money lost.

Doing regular inspections and maintenance visits could easily catch the damage before it gets out of control. There are plenty of things to use to do regular internal unit inspections, from fire safety, to fuse updates, light bulb updates, yard work and caretaking etc. If you catch damage early, like even once a month, that can easily be enough to stop it before it becomes unreasonable. You just have to give proper written notice of entry in the legal time frame and specify reason for entry to the unit. With enough damage. as long as the lease mentions damage being reason for eviction, even just giving them warning of "hey, this damage here, I am recording this and if it doesn't stop, there will be eviction with police intervention." There is likely someone who coordinates the housing for them you can contact, or the section 8 legal branch and mention the issue, and THEY will warn the tenants. It will then be on record. Increased landlord presence and warnings of concequences for breaching the lease are definitely an effective combo as long as you are still polite and considerate about the inspections and visits, asking if there is anything else that may need done, like weatherstripping, a loose floorboard, etc. If they feel close to you, they're less likely to screw you over when you have a close physical proximity from the visits. When renting to someone you suspect of damage or illegal activity, just do the inspections within your legal rights. You are always allowed to have the police present by requesting in advanced accompaniment on a specific day if you feel you are in danger of verbal/physical assault or anything of the like by making a legal inspection of the premises. Then, you ALSO have police witness to the damages that may be inside.
