I was born and raised in Houston. Back in the 70s and 80s, this mall (Sharpstown) was the "good" bigger, upperscale mall to go to. The smaller one we went to was Westwood mall...but Sharpstown was an all day stay kinda mall.

While it's no longer your traditional mall, it's still in decent shape and has a fair amount of businesses. If someone told me 15 years ago that Sharpstown Mall would outlive West Oaks Mall in the future, I wouldn't believe them.

This mall definitely looks more alive than Greenspoint, that’s for sure. Went there a couple of weeks ago with some friends and it was extremely depressing, even the food court *Eclipse* is not existent anymore. There was only like 4 stores open, the fountains were turned off, it just had a very melancholic atmosphere all around.

70's - early 80's was the Oil & Gas Boom phase before the bust around 1985 - 86. Truly a spectacular time! Parts of Houston have re-invented themselves over the decades but didn't really return to that level of glory. Sharpstown never recovered, just a slow decline since the bust. Galleria was able to power through because mostly upper-class shoppers.

Man this mall used to be so good in the late 80's early 90's. We went there every single Saturday morning and it was packed with all the "who's who" in Houston. All the kids would hang out at the arcade while parents shopped and then meet up at the food court upstairs. Christmas time was especially fun to be there! In the mid 90's it started to become a hangout for the hispanic gangs and it went downhill from there.

When "gangster" rap become popular in the late 80's early 90's this mall went down hill. All the Mexicans wanted to be rappers from Compton so bad so they formed gangs and pretended to be from L.A. Amazing how much influence rap music has on Blacks and Hispanics. They will follow RAP music to the death. If RAP music tells them to ride dirt bikes or ATVs on the freeway they will do it because RAP music is the truth! Wonder how many times a day the guys locked up in prison for life listen to "damn it feels good to be a gangsta."

@@Speed00007 Yes, I remember all the hispanic gangs in the 90's loved to hang out there and it became unsafe. I would say this mall was "over" by 1997. That's when the beautiful and safe First Colony Mall opened.

@@Speed00007I’m Colombian and no offense to Mexicans, but I always thought Chicano culture was cringe and pretty immature, and most Chicanos are ironically extremely racist towards native Mexicans, can’t speak properly nor have kept in touch with their culture. I understand that gangs formed in the 70’s as a form of Hispanic and black communities to protect themselves from police brutality and wanting to keep their neighborhoods safe, but sadly, they ended up turning on their own people, and till this day, gangs are a major problem in Latino and black communities. Now, being in a gang means attacking innocent bystanders, rap*ng women and children, and being an overall pathetic excuse for a human being. It’s sad.

@@marioncarbonell6047 I had to look up what chicano culture was on google. You must be pretty old (like me) because I doubt Hispanic youths of today know what that is. Whatever hispanic country you are from you all have your strengths and weaknesses. Some make cocaine and some sell it. Some Hispanic countries have corrupt governments that rob the people and some..... well actually all Hispanic countries have corrupt governments that steal from the people. Guess this is why you all want to come to countries that were founded by white Europeans. Prove me wrong.

It’s really sad to see malls like this empty of customers. One of our malls was knocked down to make way for a wearhouse, and our mall, which used to be wonderful is pretty much empty. They’re putting in apts, medical bldg and hospital. The largest mall, with Nordstrom and highy end stores do a lot of business, but don’t go near the food court unless you’re bad ass. 😎 Thank you Rich for showing us around. There seem to be some unique places in there. I noticed how clean it is too!❤❤

I just wanted to thank you for bringing back some of the best memories of my life. My family moved down to Houston in August of 1975 from St. Louis due to his job at the phone company. We didn't have a clue what or where anything was but ended up tenting a condo about a mile from where they were building Sharps town Mall and OMG did I spend a lot of time (and money lol) walking those very floors. What fantastic times back then every time I think of Sharpstown mall the first thing was the smell of the store Wicks and Sticks with the candles and incense truly a great memory. We still live in the Houston area although we moved out to a small town of Richmond just about a half hour or so. Frankly though I don't think its the same, first is no people I never thought I would see the day that mall would look like that...actually what I REALLY can't believe is its still there ! Damnnnnn its been everything including a technical college and then a shooting galley now back to a mall glad your safe.

Man, so much time my family spent here when I was growing up, especiallywith my grandparents. I remember there used to be a Glamour Shots, a CD store where I got my first portable CD player, shopped a lot at 5-7-9 and similar stores in high school. We used to stop here Sundays after church to eat in the food court, usually Arbys and sometimes went to a movie as well. So weird that this place still exists at all imho.

When First Colony opened in the 90s, it would end up killing three malls over: first Westwood, then Sharpstown and eventually West Oaks. Out of all three of those malls, only Sharpstown is still open and as a mall. I have lived in Alief most of my life but lived in Sharpstown briefly before moving there. By the end of the 2000s, West Oaks was already on its deathbed and many of my fellow Alief-ians were already patronizing First Colony.

It is a vicious circle, I suppose. The shops start closing, the people stop arriving, less and less money being spent, more and more and more shops closing, less people again, less etc. It is quite sad really because shopping is the oxygen of civilisation. Without shopping everything collapses. I loved the look of the LV suitcases. I am guessing that a good portion of that shops business is via the internet, so the lower foot traffic might not affect them as much, maybe? Thank you for the video! Have a wonderful week! 1. Some close within 6 months to a year. 2. Some are fronts for other activity 3. Some are there for "tax" purposes 4. And I would not be surprised if the drug cartels are cleaning their dirty money through "investments" in the mall. The plethora of "Car Title Loan" businesses in Houston are just that: Cartel monies being whitewashed.

From San Antonio originally. Pasadena is my new adopted city since November 13, 2013. We have our own abandoned, used to be mall here in The Dena😁 It's even more dead than Sharpstown. It looks decent though. I will say that Sharpstown seems to have potential to be like its heydays, and then even more. Its just a big money, forward thinking, carefree, big time investor thing. It's in good shape. Just needs some attention to detail that's all. Kool video. New subsciber.

It won't happen, it's just miles and miles of apartments around there now. very low income, that's why it's a flea market now. Even malls in good neighborhoods can't survive, look at mall of the mainland.
@rodneywashington2017

Malls currently that remake their identity thrive, as well as the neighborhood remaking itself. Memorial City Mall is changing its vibe regardless of the high incomes in the area. Whoever invests in a product with big money that makes sense, is when places like this, and the areas around it win big. With no innovation, you'll just continue to get repetitive stagnation.
@nategz9875
@nategz9875 Жыл бұрын
@@rodneywashington2017 I think a teardown, metrorail station and mixed use buildings might bring the area back. But that will push out poorer residents. That area just has too many low income apartments and has a dangerous reputation. Most murders in the city happen around there. Gulfton, Fondren, Bellerive, Bellaire, Bissonette, Forum Park all those areas make up the poorest part of the city. In 5th and 3rd ward at least those people own houses. In a house neighborhood you don't have as many people around you to piss you off. In all those apartments everyone is stacked on top of each other.

@rodneywashington2017 Жыл бұрын
@@nategz9875 Well I'm always for mass transit implementation for sure! Metro Rails, BRTs, Trackless Trams, Subways, People Movers, and Regional Trains. In addition to that though, some level of shopping with go with that when it comes to an overground and underground stations and tunnels. The issue with the crime and income though would have to be properly and fairly discussed amongst developers, the city, and of course the residents there for their help on putting a stop to the crime. It'll be a rebuild, renaissance, instead of a mindless gentrification thing. Inclusive and productive.

This was the Houston Galleria before there was a Houston Galleria. What happened? The same happened to the Greenspoint area. Let me explain. Houston Metro ran bus lines to both premium areas while the apartments in the area started running down. This caused a huge exodus of rich folks from around Sharpstown further out to the southwest towards Sugarland. The rest is history. The same would happen in Far North Dallas as a similar running of a bus line would obliterate Prestonwood Town Center which housed both a Neiman Marcus and a Lord & Taylor. So, both Sharpstown Mall and Greenspoint Mall got obliterated. Sharpstown is just remaining open in denial. R.I.P. "Taps" (Fat lady sings)

There’s no one there.I guess people are afraid of encountering an active shooter after the recent mall shootings.

Lol, this mall is still in much better shape than many of the other iconic malls across America. Be thankful for that. Of course, it isn't the great Sharpstown of the 1980s I remember but consider the main factors. At least it's still functioning for a different demographic. Case in point, look at the Puente Hills Mall out in L.A., the scene from the 1985 Back to the Future movie. Other favorite malls across the country are gutted and severely deteriorated.

immediately discredited the second he said abandoned. this mall stays packed on weekends, its like the flea market. you went on a weekday morning. Apart from the stores in the main building, they have been constructing new spaces to lease out where the JC Penneys/Foleys used to be. This Mall actually survived and revived itself when it turned into a Hispanic focused shopping center.

"You Believe. "I can't believe that before you did this video that you didn't do research on the history of this mall to know that it was Sharpstown Mall. This mall was built in March 1955. The mall was the go-to! LV and Gucci in a beauty supply! Come on. 😅😅 You have to have a license from the designers to sell their products. Don't believe the hype.
