One of the best forgotten rivalries. It didn't last long but it was a lot of fun. I remember the Oilers all talked about how much respect they had for the Steelers and the Steelers said the same about the oilers. The issue we (the Oilers lol) had was we couldn't get that title game in the dome. Credit to the Steelers for having home field advantage both times. And also the Mike Renfro's beautiful TD catch incorrectly called out of bounds hurt too ;)

The day the Oilers left Houston for Tennessee was the last time I watched football. It made me so sick to see this kind fan betrayed for money. I just don't have the heart to invest anything into sports ever again there are much more important things that really matter. But that's just me I live in Packard country now with people who have not known such fan betrayal; however this video brought back some memories of a more innocent time.

I was 14 and I was also at this wonderful event. The air was literally electric. I remember the anticipation of waiting for about 3 hours, and then the excitement as we were told the buses were just outside. No sad faces, just proud fans loving their team. If I remember correctly, only100 people were at the airport to greet the team, and players said they were worried they had lost the support of the town. Heheh...we were all HERE!!! No fans will ever match the love of Oiler's fans! LUV YA BLUE!

No city ever loved a team the way Houston loved the Oilers while Bum was their coach. They were outmanned (except for Earl and maybe Brazile), but they played on guts and love for one another, and the city was smitten and all-in. That they could not beat the Steelers was a sad reality, but they pushed Pittsburgh to its physical limits and earned the admiration of the Steelers players. God bless Bum, and Earl, and Dante, and all of them. ps Houston is no longer capable of this kind of love. Even in victory the Astros never experienced anything remotely like this.

Some cities are dealt successful seasons and spoiled with SuperBowl wins. That was not the case with Houston and our beloved Oilers but, the bond that Houston had with the Oilers was nothing less. The "Columbia-blue" pom-poms, Luv Ya Blue placards, "Houston Oilers #1 blaring from the speakers above...those that did not live here then, will never understand. We didn't have one SuperBowl to show for all the Oilers' years here but, that did not diminish the love and enthusiasm we had for the team.

Great video and a great time to be a football fan in Houston. Point of reference for the video's poster - while the 1978 homecoming was large (estimated to be 45,000), the 1979 homecoming was even larger with an estimated 70,000. What a unique time in sports history!

Wow this gives me goosebumps! If I were one of the players on the bus I would have needed a box of Kleenex. Even though they have the Texans, the city of Houston should have never lost the Oilers, that was just criminal. Also when the Texans started in Houston in 02 they should have gone right back to being the Oilers. When Tennessee turned into the Titans bud Adams had to lose the rights to the oiler name. The Cleveland browns came back as the browns and the Oilers should have too.

Shortly after this they ripped out the old dome scoreboard to "make room for more seats", didn't even ask the fans how we felt about it. Then we got cheated out of a championhip in Pittsburgh, then they fired Bum Phillips, then sold our team to Tennessee. And in the following year, the Oilers made some serious noise in the NFL after upsetting the Chargers in San Diego, they came close to punching their ticket to Pasadena(Home of Super Bowl XIV) had the Referee not blown that call on Dan Pastorini's Touchdown Pass to Mike Renfro. Psychologically, that changed the complexity of the 1979 AFC Championship Game.

Then the city turns around and builds a new stadium for a new team that want be going anywhere for a long time. Bud Adams at lease was going to put money down on a new stadium.
