At 64 stories and 909 feet (277 m) above the ground level, the Williams Tower is the tallest building in Houston outside of Downtown Houston.[3] When it was constructed in 1983, it was also the world's tallest skyscraper outside of a city's central business district.[2][8]
The building was built to function as two separate towers stacked directly on top of one another, one comprising the first forty floors and the other the forty-first to sixty-fourth. The building has separate banks of elevators and lobbies for each of the two building sections. A majority of the bottom 40 floors are occupied by Williams. The remainder of the building is occupied by a variety of tenants.
Williams Tower was named "Skyscraper of the Century" in the December 1999 issue of Texas Monthly magazine.[9] Paul Gapp of the Chicago Tribune said that the building became an "instant classic" when it opened.[10] Paul Goldberger of The New York Times said that the tower gave Post Oak Boulevard "a center, an anchor, which most out-towns lack".[11

This building does have an observation deck however it's not open to the public and I know for a fact because I used to do security in the tower and it's located facing the Westview it's not facing downtown nor the Texas medical center skyline and on top of that you can look on the floor and see the street through clear glass in one section the very room also houses other floor to ceiling replicas notable skyscrapers of the city such as downtown's Bank of America tower.

My brother in law was an ironworker on that project. He was given a glass panel that had a small chip and we used it in a house we built. Totally forgot about that- thanks for triggering the memory.

When I was there a few years ago for a project, I was shocked to find there's all that building and no food court! There was just a vendor with a refrigerator of sandwiches and drinks. On google maps, looks like theres a murphys there now.

amazing footage. I watched Transco Tower being built in the early 80's. Too bad the beacon was not turned on, it's been off for years.

I went up to that beacon when it was under construction. A ladder went to a hatch in the roof that opened to the red clearance light. The rotating beacon had not been installed yet. Interesting looking out and seeing helicopters flying around below...

Very impressive. I had no idea it even existed. I suppose it's off the beaten path, because I've been through Houston many times and can't remember ever noticing it. Another reason to be a proud Texan, because the skyscraper is gorgeous. I've been inside the USS Lexington down in Corpus Christi. That is a really impressive ship. They have a really nice museum, heritage building area, and an awesome aquarium.

This tower sits in the Galleria area. The freeway beside it in the video is 610 West. You can see Williams Tower easily.

beside the 1 that was at Williams Tower, Chase Tower downtown had 1, you could just walk into the building and take the elevator, but i suppose they were closed over security concerns after 9/11
