Over 38 years ago, hovering autos in the TH-55 were my bugbear. Mr. Mitchell, my instructor, made me do probably 20 a day until I got them. At the end of the TH-55 stage, we alternated doing them until one of us did a bad one. He won most of the time, but I did win a couple. I'm really enjoying watching your journey in copters. For the record, instruments kicked my butt and I ended up as a B-52 Navigator. Yes, I was USAF at Fort Rucker. It was a trip!

I remember these days, most of my training was in a S300C, but later doing hover autos in a R22 I learned to push full right pedal the instant you hear the RPM drop. This worked pretty well, until I flew a Cabri G2
@HotshotForever4 жыл бұрын
@dissimetry The Cabri is pretty nice, smooth and quiet, I enjoyed flying it. And the first time I did a hover auto in it I prove from a 18" hover you can do 180* right turn before landing. Startled the instructor and myself just bit. But the instinct to shove full right pedal on RPM drop doesn't work in a clockwise rotor system.

I’m watching as I write. When I trained in the UH-1 in the late-80s, the instructor would roll off the throttle with zero warning and only a “hovering autorotation” verbal command as he was killing power. We were never taught this was training for a tail rotor malfunction. If the TR goes out in a hover, no one will have the reflexes or knowledge to recognize the problem in time to roll off the throttle before impact with the ground. Your best best is just to avoid rolling over and get it in the ground safely-ish. We WERE taught to do this maneuver in the event of an engine failure, which will manifest exactly the same as the instructor shutting off the engine power. In that case, you will still have tail rotor control that you’ll have to finesse in order to keep the nose pointed straight ahead, hence the requirement to maintain heading +/-10 degrees. Loss of tail rotor would easily wipe out that heading control in the blink of an eye. Now, once we transitioned to the Blackhawk track, we never trained for a dual engine failure outside of the simulator. Why not? Because it happens so rarely (I don’t think it has ever happened before I graduated flight school and I don’t know of any helicopter dual engine failures since then) that it wasn’t worth the risk to train for it in a real helicopter. And the Blackhawk can usually fly with one engine out anyway, so even a single engine failure was a “land as soon as practicable” emergency procedure.

I had that same question where you'll hear the controllers talking to other aircraft but won't hear them talking back at the Class C I operate out of. I was told that if they're not very busy, they'll have one controller working multiple frequencies. So you may have clearance and ground grouped together. Or clearance and tower. When the controller transmits you'll hear them on both frequencies they're covering, but not the aircraft they're speaking to unless you're on that frequency as well. Those hovering auto rotations looked hard and intimidating. Keep it up!
@KenNewberry4 жыл бұрын
Here at SFO they simulcast tower / ground and clearance with one controller when it’s slow.

5:27 You called out "Awright, it just settled there.." and I don't think he really gave much explanation of what's happening there. This may have been answered in some other portion of the comments; at risk of repeating something he probably covered in the debrief anyway: As you transition forward from a hover to forward flight, two things are occurring: 1) You're tilting the rotor disk forward, so part of your lift vector will transition from 100% downward, to some percentage forward. Meaning your "hover" lift decreases, as some of the power is dedicated to forward flight. Without a commensurate addition of power (collective), you'll settle a bit as the lift vector changes. 2) As you approach ETL, you'll start to outrun your ground-effect airflow, meaning you'll get less efficient momentarily prior to reaching ETL. The two effects combined will tend to cause the ship to settle as you transition to forward flight. Only way to counteract it is with additional power, but it's generally not required if you're careful and manage the takeoff with speed. Transition too rapidly forward, and you'll NEED more power. Do it slowly, and you can takeoff with min power. Smooth is fast; fast is smooth. Enjoying the vids. Must be weird to use your feet for something useful again, eh?

CLEARED FOR THE OPTION-ATC authorization for an aircraft to make a touch and go, low approach, missed approach, stop and go, or full-stop landing at the discretion of the pilot. It is normally used in training so that an instructor can evaluate a student's performance under changing situations.
