Thanks Shane. I've been rowing since February 2021. I wanted to regain some fittness after a long illness. Following your videos I have knocked a minute off my splits, I have lost 12 kilos in weight and my endurance has boosted from 5min sessions to 2 X 20mins five times a week. I can't say my sessions are enjoyable whilst doing them but i can feel the beinfits of your coaching. As they say in certain circles "Pain is just weakness leaving the body" Thanks again from France.

100% agree. Any time I find myself mindlessly rowing and my numbers on the monitor getting too high, the first thing I do is focus on my catch to give myself no effort improvement in my numbers. Unfortunately rowing isn’t so kind and it never takes long to get back into the burn zone but usually I’m sweaty enough to hide the tears...

Weirdly I did this earlier today, and felt a helluva difference (even though I did leg day before the rowing session AND upped the resistance)

I was just practicing keeping constant tension on the stroke while keeping my stroke rate low. Perfect timing to see your video. Thanks, looking forward to the drill. Cheers!

Thanks for making this video. I haven’t been on a rower for a little over a year now. Just got my Concept2 in the mail. This video not only helped with my drive but it also saved my hands. I was holding way too tight on the handle bars but it turns out that was because my timing was off when it was time to drive.

Good idea to practice just the catch, it's a critical moment in the stroke. I found very good practice on the water in a single sculling boat, not only does it sharpen the stroke it's also a good practise for sitting (balancing) the boat.

I have had this issue in the past. It will be interesting to practice this to see what I can gain from it. Thanks Shane.

I got to try this. Just got a rower and am trying to get things figured out. I've been wondering why when I begin the pull there's no tension at all. well it sounds like you answered my question, thank you.

Shane, the catch is just that. You have to catch-up to and begin adding force to the de-accelerating flywheel so the flywheel decay reverses (accelerates) as quickly as possible. Do it instantaneously is the goal although some slack is likely especially at the higher stroke rates and max effort.

I just startend rowing this spring and your videos have been awesome! I have a question, I feel like I’m pushing away at the catch like this and getting the early pressure, but I get a front loaded force curve. If I’m focusing on getting a good curve I feel like I have to ease into the pressure. What can I do?

Definitely something to revisit on the Concept 2: am I exploding at the catch and maximizing my power? Thanks again, as usual, Shane!

This is so money. I feel like I have a decent catch 80% of the time, probably 10% slop, and 10% where it feels perfect, and that 10% feels magical. Nothing sucks like bending like a pretzel, thinking you are coming in just right and having slop in that chain as you push out, and it feels far too easy.

Awsome video as usual Shane. Question after multiple surgery over years the 11 catch is almost impossible. If I do a proper 11without seat coming a little under the drive is so short I can't engage the legs. I film myself all time trying. I'm coming back from back injury so want it perfect but literally if I'm 11 I'm near the back of the rower hahha. Any suggestions or just keep cheating slightly or have the long seat position hope that makes scence. And thanks for all the awsome videos over the years

I believe this to be a fault with the machine. That assembly should engage no mater the timing. I'm new to this machine and that 4" slack drives me nuts. Thanks for explaining this maddening idiosyncrasy, I'll work on the timing. Does their newer Dynamic Rowerg behave like this?

Off topic, anyone think Shane reminds you of Tom Cavanagh (The Flash) TV series? Back on topic, thanks for the catch timing. Will practice on that tomorrow!

Kind of, the thing to remember is that rowing requires a lot of fluidity and transfer or directions smoothly. Finesse is the key here.
