I remember this as a small boy, the controversy over the book was everywhere on the radio. Then shortly after I went to the local newsagents and suddenly there was a huge pile of these books for sale. Seems the 1940's and 50's ended with this ruling as everything began to open up.

"Lady Chatterley's Lover", considered obscene when it was published in 1928 (there were still lots of people w/ a Victorian mindset/principles around at that time, hence why it was banned), is a wonderful period novel. "Sons & Lovers" is good as well. Even more interesting imo is the writers (D.H. Lawrence) life story & the story of his remains after his early death at the age of 44 of tuberculosis.

Sad to say, the Victorian mindset still exists today.

I wonder if the juxtaposition of the sold out notice for Lady Chatterley with copies of The Authority of the Bible was deliberate mischief.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover was banned as obscene in the United Kingdom, as well as Australia and the United States. It had originally been published in Italy, I think in 1928, to avoid censorship. Penguin announced plans to publish the novel in the UK in 1960 and immediately faced prosecution. The court case determined Lady Chatterley had literary merit and could no longer be suppressed. Going to trial was the best publicity a book launch ever received, with stores running out of copies within a few hours of publication.

@@christopherspencer8110 And do not forget that the ban in itself makes people want to read it!

@@siewheilou399 Published in Florence in 1928 and in Paris in 1929. There’s a story that Queen Mary was given a copy and an appalled King George V confiscated it from her, only to be found reading it himself a few days later.

Why it was banned?

It was a romance novel with s*x scenes, so that was seen as "obscene." The romance is an extramarital affair between a high-class lady and a working-class man, so the class difference was also seen as objectionable at the time.
