Retired and turning 70 years of age, I decided to go vegan and grow a beard. It has become a hobby in a sense.

Culturally, we Puerto Rican men tend to be clean cut and/or fully shaven. Beards are not really a “thing”. Consequently, every time I’ve Iet my beard grow in the past I would get friends and family to hate on the process and tell me to SHAVE IT OFF! No sir, not today! This time I’m sticking by the process. I’ve let everybody know, even my employer, that I’m letting my beard grow. I’ll be a month in come May 17th. Let’s see where this leads me… lol

I totally understand what you're saying about how its ties in with your identity. I know it's only a beard but I feel like without it, I wouldn't really be me. I think my beard definitely improves the way I look so I feel more confident. However, I wouldn't want to work anywhere that doesn't allow me be myself. I think a way it can harm your life is if you get obsessed with it. My partner sometimes accuses me of being obsessed with it. It's easy to get caught up in watching all the beard tutorials and trying all the different combs, brushes & products. I suppose there's worse things to be obsessed with though.

Speaking as a metal head with a big beard, I've been put into more boxes than I care to remember. I've even been called a terrorist because of it; make of that what you will.

Yeah, people tend to assume bearded people are terrorists, especially if they’re also brown people with beards. It’s very sad and unfair 😡 just let people have beards!

I already know my identity will be wrapped up with the beard, it already does and I don’t even have a beard . That doesn’t seem possible, but it is . People probably think of me as the person obsessed with facial hair

Good subject for video. Considering my face, background, I changed style again. My full beard look verged on being Jewish(am) /rabbi, or biker-ish, or occasionally, Muslim. Really have been engaged by the more religious here in the streets of NY. At the end of last year, I took cheeks off and made an angle down from moustache across to my jaw. Gives me a more biker vibe. Is a good thing for me, short guy LOL. Thumbnail photo in not current. Note, on my last trip to London in NOV 2002, with a short beard, I was pulled out of crowd just walking in the terminal in Heathrow, on departure, for immediate screening (then expedited past ordinary queue).

Pros: never having to tie a necktie. The amazed look you get when asked about how long it took to grow. People think you are very wise. Cons: Zipper jackets, anything with a flame, other people who want to touch it, especially children, seat belts, clogged drains, getting tangled up in your sleep. You are at a disadvantage if you are forced to defend yourself. cooking for others if you shed. Did I mention flames?

A lot of people have an aversion to an abandoned hair regardless of what part of the body it was on. I myself am even prone to this. In college I had the fun room with the Lazy-Boy recliner and Super Nintendo. One friend was of Thai ancestory and had long and perfectly straight hair. His hair was freaking awesome and I mourned for a moment when I learned he cut it years after school, but whenever we found one of his hairs stuck to the chair it was always "Eeeeeeew!" and my roommate or I would carry it to the trashcan like it was going to bite whoever picked it up.

If people like me " good ", if they don't , " no hard feelings ", either way I'm keeping my beard, it's who I am and who I want to be.

The problem with beards is when it comes to be in a professional setting like work and you feel like you put people off in some weird unexplainable way, and that you don't care about your appearance and that you're like macho mysoginist, but I don't care most of the time what they think or what I think people think.

That argument gets used a lot in many different situations, but with beards I think it fits. I think beards are a bit like human antlers and can project a image of dominance and a heirarchy.

It's also weird how we live in a hyper sensitive society where people have become so fragile that we have to pretend that obesity is beautiful, yet people feel like it is socially acceptable to approach a bearded guy that they don't know in order to tell them that beards are ugly and should be shaved. On the flip side short of having a baby or cute animal with you, there's nothing like a beard for getting unsolicited compliments from strangers too.

2:22 put into a box? stereotypical comment? I'd put you in the late 19th and early 20th century bearded bomb throwing anarchist box. My beard gives me financial insight, my stock picking intuition is proportional to my beard length. So color me "sage" (Obi Wan Kenobi, but with out the magic)
